I think Billy Crudup and Kate Hudson are fantastic casting in Almost Famous - as is the casting of the whole film.

Daniel Day Lewis in everything is brilliant. And Julianne Moore is great in everything.

I have never recovered from the wrongness of Cameron Diaz in Gangs Of New York or Anna Hathaway in Interstellar.

Jodie Comer as Villanelle. Absolutely amazing

Agreed Jodie was pure brilliance but the whole cast were superb.

Anna Maxwell-Martin in pretty much everything she is in is spot on.

Loved Emma and Ryan in La La Land and despite hating her being cast initially, loved Renee as Bridget Jones.

Dislike Emma Watson in everything I have seen her in. Have never managed to get through a Harry Potter movie as a result.

BoilingHotand50something · 01/12/2024 13:07

Agree that generally like Anne Hathaway but not the snivelling in Les Mis was a no from me.

Freysimo · 01/12/2024 13:28

Ambika Mod was brilliant in This is Going to Hurt but miscast as Emma in One Day on Netflix.

unlikelywitch · 01/12/2024 13:31

I’ve never actually thought about it but you’re so right OP, Almost Famous is absolutely perfectly cast.

Best for me are Joe Pesci in Goodfellas (although again the whole cast were fantastic), James Gandolfini and Edie Falco in The Sopronas, Michael Caine in Miss Congeniality, Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan in Banshees of Inisherin, Julie Walters in Brooklyn, Maggie Smith in
Downtown, and Toby Jones and Sophie Thompson in Detectorists.

Worst are Helena Bonham Carter in Fight Club (I don’t like that film but still felt she was totally wrong for the part), Brad Pitt in Inglorious Bastards, anything Emma Watson is in.

I agree the accent was for the American director - unpleasant. Blunt's own accent slightly adjusted would have been have so much better - this accent makes her too arch.

It was like watching the lead in a school play.

Strokethefurrywall · 01/12/2024 13:36

Jack Reacher - Tom Cruise = shite
Jack Reacher - Alan Ritchson = perfect

Aussiegold · 01/12/2024 13:38

Not a film, but Terry Pratchetts Guards Guards wad made for tv as The Watch.........every single casting was awful from a female dwarf played by a 6ft bloke to old Lord Vertinari played by Anna Chancellor.......dreadful.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/12/2024 13:40

Best: Olivia Coleman in Wicked Little Letters. Sublime ❤️

Mydahliasareshit · 01/12/2024 13:40

Uma Thurman as Mrs Peel in The Avengers movie. Should have gone to Liz Hurley.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/12/2024 13:41

Also: Timothy Olyphant and Walt Goggins in Justified. I could have watched another 6 seasons.

Having just rewatched it a few days ago, Kate Winslet as Marianne in Sense & Sensibility is just perfect

We watched Sense and Sensibility last week and were so disappointed with it. It's just beyond dull, and Hugh Grant is surprisingly terrible in it.

stringbean · 01/12/2024 13:42

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 01/12/2024 07:18

Best: Rosamund Pike in I Care A Lot. Beautifully evil. Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn.

Worst: Emma Thompson as Elinor in Sense and Sensibility. Too old for the part, sorry. Nicolas Cage in Next. He looked like a homeless person, not a love interest.

Agree about Emma Thompson - although she acted the part brilliantly, she was too old for Elinor.

Ditto Alan Rickman as Snape - brilliantly acted, but too old. I always envisaged Tim Roth in the part of Snape when I read HP - he would have been perfect!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/12/2024 13:45

Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker's Dracula was perfect.

Renee Zellweger's casting as Bridget Jones should never have been allowed.

CandiedPrincess · 01/12/2024 13:48

Mamma Mia 2 - I loved the castings of the women when they were younger but Harry and Sam were dreadful. In fact Pierce Brosnan in as Sam can also get in the bin.

Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton is perfection.

Suranne Jones as Dr Foster was great.

Rivals...not enough eye candy, the casting was quite weird about from Danny Dyer who nailed it was Freddie and Katherine Parkinson as Lizzie, they were great.

Mumpud · 01/12/2024 13:55

Worst: agree about Rupert in Rivals, sooo disappointing.

Best: Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show - sublime.

Also probably all of Fleabag, especially Olivia Colman.

Shoezembagsforever · 01/12/2024 13:57

Calliopespa · 01/12/2024 00:57

I wasn’t totally convinced by Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones.

We watched the trailer for the new Bridget Jones film yesterday, and Renee Zellwegger looked very strange compared to the other regular cast, who've strangely aged better.

Moreshroomsplease · 01/12/2024 14:01

Worst: agree about Rupert in Rivals, sooo disappointing.

Best: Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show - sublime.

Also probably all of Fleabag, especially Olivia Colman.

I think Fleabag’s sister Claire was absolutely perfectly cast, rivalling even OC’s performance. Their sibling relationship was so heart-wrenchingly and accurately portrayed.

needhelpwiththisplease · 01/12/2024 14:05

Best John malkovich in Dangerous Liasons
He was just perfect.

Worst anything with the Rock

Chemenger · 01/12/2024 14:06

it was absolutely unwatchable, very disappointing.

MotherofBassets · 01/12/2024 07:40

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher absolutely infuriates me so I'm glad others agree. In my dreams I picture Liev Schreiber.

You should watch the Reacher series with Alan Ritchson 😬

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/12/2024 14:21

SofandaCox · 01/12/2024 14:19

You should watch the Reacher series with Alan Ritchson 😬

I think Ritchson looks absolutely right for it but it was still verging on unwatchable.

OnlyFrench · 01/12/2024 14:45

Worst: Nick Cage as Captain Corelli

Best: John Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons

Also surprisingly Hugh Grant in just about everything, especially since he was allowed to move on from being a bumbling but pretty Englishman

OnlyFrench · 01/12/2024 14:46

@needhelpwiththisplease posted before I read you'd already said JM. He was appalling and so sexy at the same time!

Bewareofthisonetoo · 01/12/2024 15:10

Oooh yes agree about John Malcovich in DL!!!
Read it years ago and he was just perfect.
Also Martin Sheen in The West Wing.
In fact all of the first series of the West Wing

wildfellhall · 01/12/2024 15:14

Yes John Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons is perfect as is Michelle P.

Michael Sheen v Rufus Sewell's prince Andrews?

I think Sheen acts the spirit of him better but Wufus looked more alike somehow.
