I think Billy Crudup and Kate Hudson are fantastic casting in Almost Famous - as is the casting of the whole film.

Daniel Day Lewis in everything is brilliant. And Julianne Moore is great in everything.

I have never recovered from the wrongness of Cameron Diaz in Gangs Of New York or Anna Hathaway in Interstellar.

I actually thought Keira Knightley was a great Elizabeth. One of my favourite films! I like it better than the BBC version.

TickingAlongNicely · 01/12/2024 09:33

Maggie Smith was Mcgonagall. I'm intrigued who they will get for the TV series. The right level of formal teacher and caring granny. . RIP.

newyear2024 · 01/12/2024 09:39

Best- Charlize Theron as Eileen Warnos in Monster - amazing! I couldn't believe how well she portrayed Eileen
Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman - absolutely amazing acting

Worse - Jamie Dornan in FSOG - I know it's trashy anyway and would probably be hard for any actor to protray but he was so awkward and his American accent was cringe, I think a better actor could have made a big difference. A young Christian Bale maybe

Worst - Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La La Land. Just not right!

Also not sure about Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones and Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio in Titanic. Odd couple.

I know everyone loves Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect but I didn’t!

Loved Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La Laland. Agree about Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di caption though.

deeahgwitch · 01/12/2024 09:42

Casting Fail:
Leonardo di Caprio in Titanic - far too young for Kate Winslett.
Tom Hanks in Bonfire of the Vanities - just wrong.
Matt Damon as Jason Bourne - I'd read the books. Matt wasn't how I pictured Jason Bourne. Too baby faced.

Great Casting:
Alan Rickman as De Valera in Michael Collins- inspired casting.
Barry Keoghan as Dominic in The Banshees of Inisherin - what a performance.
Judi Dench in Philomena.

TheaBrandt · 01/12/2024 09:50

Rosamund Pike was Jane in the 1990s
pride and prejudice

TheaBrandt · 01/12/2024 09:51

Also loved emma stone and Ryan gosling
in lala land love that film

blackcatsarethebestcats · 01/12/2024 09:52

How has nobody mentioned Gary Oldman in Slow Horses? Superb.

deeahgwitch · 01/12/2024 10:14

mids2019 · 01/12/2024 07:53

Why did they cast an American in Bridget Jones? There must have been some good English actors in that era?

I wondered that too.

wildfellhall · 01/12/2024 10:17

Oh the whole cast of slow Horses just total casting perfection 💕
Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth together almost the best cast couple ever

Mr Rochester though.... so many bad choices. Fassbender is much too physically lean to play him. Ciaran Hinds is just too old. My memory is that George C Scott was great but that Susannah York was too drippy.

Clare Foy and Matt Smith fantastic as Elizabeth and Philip in the Crown.

Clare Foy is almost always fantastic.

Wolf Hall casting is brilliant. Love the actor playing Catherine Parr.

Rosamund Pike was Jane in the 1990s
pride and prejudice

She wasn't. She was Jane in the 2005 film with Keira Knightly. Sussanah Harker was Jane in the Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth BBC version in the 90 s .

Best: Harriet Walter in everything, but particularly as Fanny Dashwood in Sense & Sensibility. She absolutely stole that film. And agreed about her in the Wimsey adaptations back in the day, Harriet Vane is quite unappealing in the books and she made her wonderful.

Worst: well obviously I agree re Handie McTowell in four weddings (who was the first choice??), but I have to blame Richard Curtis' clunky writing and the direction to some extent as she was extraordinary when directed by Soderbergh.

redastherose · 01/12/2024 11:35

Having rewatched this the other day I think the casting in 'While you were sleeping' is perfect, everyone fits so well in the family.

MrsKeats · 01/12/2024 11:38

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 01/12/2024 07:18

Best: Rosamund Pike in I Care A Lot. Beautifully evil. Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn.

Worst: Emma Thompson as Elinor in Sense and Sensibility. Too old for the part, sorry. Nicolas Cage in Next. He looked like a homeless person, not a love interest.

How was Aragorn evil?!!!

SocksAndTheCity · 01/12/2024 11:40

Best (recent): Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz. Also Christoph Walz in Inglorious Basterds.

Worst: Jack Nicholson in The Shining

longtompot · 01/12/2024 11:48

A voice acting part, but the person who played the brother in Mitchell's vs Tne Machine. He had a far too mature voice to play such a young character.

I felt all of the Bridget Jones diary films were wrong and just didn't capture the books or the characters very well at all. I was just thinking about it and if it had been filmed in a similar way and feel to About Time then to me that was how the books read. Not some slapstick comedy.

wildfellhall · 01/12/2024 11:48

Mrs Keats- I think the evil referred to Rosamund Pike not Aragorn.

I agree Viggo is perfection as Aragorn.

Yes! Harriet Walter as the evil Sister in Law in Sense & Sensibility - steals every scene. She's incredible.

I LOVE Emily Blunt in Young Victoria and she's great with Rupert Friend - such a believable couple.

But all the Wickhams suck! Rupert Friend in 2005 P&P is beyond wooden - he needs to be a credible threat to Darcy not a wooden fop.

Adrian Lukis as Wickham in the 90s BBC serial is actually terrible; he's like a really creepy man. Not smooth and devastatingly charming. You need someone really gorgeous. Actually Greg wise plays Willoughby as you need Wickham played. A plausible heart breaker.

Apparently Emma Thompson did some significant script doctoring on the 2005 Pride and Prejudice but went uncredited.
I have a soft spot for this film as I love Matthew McFadyen despite his hair being a disaster in this. Keira Knightley's hair is also terrible.

deeahgwitch · 01/12/2024 11:58

Who plays Katherine Parr in Wolf Hall @wildfellhall ?
I googled but couldn't find it.

wildfellhall · 01/12/2024 12:08

Sorry! I meant Jane Seymour is played by Kate Phillips!

I was confused in my wives of HVIII by just recently seeing Firebrand with Jude law doing a fantastic end of life roaring angry Henry

OP posts:
Calliopespa · 01/12/2024 12:37

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. Way too self-conscious.

wildfellhall · 01/12/2024 12:49

I agree the accent was for the American director - unpleasant. Blunt's own accent slightly adjusted would have been have so much better - this accent makes her too arch.

Worst: Anne Hathaway in Les Mis, Anne Hathaway in One Day (I’ve nothing against her personally, or her acting, she was just miscast).

Best: Liv Tyler in LOTR. Actually all of the LOTR cast. Not The Hobbit though, particularly I thought whatsername who was in Lost was not a good choice in the Hobbit.

Oh and we watched Mr & Mrs Smith last night, Brad and Angelina were excellent choices. And surely Angelina Jolie had been born to be Lara Croft.

Other worst: Braveheart. And Kevin Costner as Robin Hood! They went for the big names not proper casting in the 80s.

NorthWestWoes · 01/12/2024 12:54

Oh I’m on a roll now. Colin Farrell as Alexander the Great - what were they thinking? And Angelina Jolie as his mother???
