In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

For those who thought RZ was wrong for Bridget Jones, I’m interested who you’d think would’ve been a good alternative?
The franchise are some of my favourite films and I’ve always really liked her in the role but I’m curious now as to who else would’ve been good. Someone mentioned Kate winslet which I could see as a potential. But struggling to picture anyone else

Piers in anything. The only thing I'd like to see him in would be a shroud.

Loki1983 · 14/08/2020 14:33

@AristotleAteMyHamster
Just what I was going to say: Tom Cruise is the worst casting for Jack Reacher!

Lonoxo · 14/08/2020 15:27

@Knocka it’s an ok film if you like that sort of stuff, faithful to the book.
I take your point that the people seeing the film weren’t there because of the leads, but it’s standard practice to name the lead actors. Not including the leads names in the trailer even quickly at the end seems lacking in courtesy especially for a profession full of luvvies.

John Hannah as Rebus far too young

Awwww but Pierce is lovely though!

I was an extra in his film 'No Escape' (which was originally called The Coup, and filmed in Thailand just weeks before a real-life coup happened!); one scene took place in a bar, where he had to drunkenly sing the most awful song. We did so many takes, and each one got more and more hilarious. At the end of the final take, he got off the stage, and said,

"I'm much better with Abba songs"... to which I very quickly, and without thinking, said, "Ummm... you really aren't".

He just burst out laughing, and said something about it being a fair cop!

He really is a smashing guy, and such a professional. Owen Wilson was in the film too, and he was really sweet. Very quiet, incredibly polite and well-mannered.

Pierce's wife, Keely, is a lot of fun, too. We bonded over shared incredulity at how all the kathoey in the film could walk in impossibly high heels, and still look as though are gliding on air!

Someone said Kate Winslet and I totally agree. When I read it way back she's just the sort of woman who I had in my head. A bit of a plain Jane, who was girl next door. RZ is CRINGE and too cookie. I think of BJ as being a more mature character.
Cloudspotter · 14/08/2020 20:31

Ooh, I love this thread. Two more spotted:

Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby - yes

Andie Macdowell in Four weddings. She was truly awful, the worst acting I've ever seen in a film. "Is it raining?" 😵

MikeUniformMike · 14/08/2020 20:37

John Hannah was completely wrong as Rebus. Ken Stott was fine.

CatAndHisKit · 14/08/2020 21:02

ooh I loved Depp as Willy Wonka - weird in the modern sense (unpredictable, with emotional hang-ups) and yet charming, Wilder was great in the vintage film but not weird enough for modern times.

CatAndHisKit · 14/08/2020 21:03

Colman as the Queen (normally I like her castings) - someone more clam and collected was needed!

CatAndHisKit · 14/08/2020 21:03

quite a few Bonds.

CatAndHisKit · 14/08/2020 21:06

I think RZ was good as Bridget - she can act! - apart from being super fit, that fast run in her knickers, very toned legs/bum! Grin...hardly an awkward slobby Bridge!

DandelionTea123 · 14/08/2020 21:09

Julie Walters in Mamma Mia. I love her in other films though.

Lonoxo · 15/08/2020 08:26

Re Kate Winslet as BJ, is she a comedic actress though? Good dramatic actress. RZ can do comedy. It was a strange choice at the time but I think she did a good job. I did originally think KW for the role but she was getting all the good British roles then and I thought another actress deserved a chance.

Pikachubaby · 15/08/2020 08:59

KW would have been rubbish as BJ!

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 15/08/2020 09:02

Maxine Peake would have been an excellent Bridget if Bridget hadn't been home counties. (I'm thinking of how fab she was doing Twinkle)

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/08/2020 09:11

I'm so sad reading some of this thread! I love:

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine - just perfect.
Keira Knightley in P&P - I love that film.
Alan Rickman is gorgeous as Colonel Brandon.
Tom Burke is excellent as Strike - I don't really have a strong opinion on how Strike should have looked, but Burke is a fantastic actor.
Loved Julie Walters in Mamma Mia - the highlight of the film for me.
James Norton was utterly terrifying in Happy Valley - brilliantly cast.

KW would have been completely wrong as BJ.

DangerMouse17 · 15/08/2020 12:03

@GhostTypeEevee different actors.
Haley Joel Osment = "I see dead people"
Freddie Highmore is in Bates Motel, The Good Dr

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 15/08/2020 12:07

Interview With a Vampire. Cruise and Pitt were in each others role. There was a blond and brunette, and they looked wrong.

CrisisCrunchie · 15/08/2020 12:22

@Pleasebeaflesbite

JL was perfect in The talented Mr Ripley. That’s all though really

If we are doing TV too (please) I would’ve had Stephen Dillane as Ser Davos and not Stannis Baratheon in GOT. Hideously miscast

Keira Knightly usually plays herself in most things. Occasionally this results in success

I think JL was good in Alfie & Gattaca too.. but not anything else
Lonoxo · 15/08/2020 12:40

@PraxidikeMeng, that’s a funny story. Good thing he wasn’t offended.

ItalianHat · 15/08/2020 14:45

andie macdowell - 4 weddings

Oh yes. She’s beautiful but she ruins the film

I’d add:
Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf

Tom Cruise in Magnolia (or any film whee he plays a rampant heroic heterosexual lady charmer. He’s the opposite of sexy)

Emma Watson in anything
