In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

@thebearwentoverthebumble

Emma watson in beauty and the beast, I like her but she wasn't belle, not for me anyway.
I've always said this! There was something missing in her performance. I always felt it was as if she was reading from a script and just didn't come across natural. The role of 'Belle' was just too big a part for her.
Fbearsmum · 13/08/2020 22:52

@Mercedes519

Can we include TV shows?

Jamie in Outlander. Red-head yes, buff, tick. But not tall enough. He’s a virtual giant in the books...

Jamie is 6'4" in the books and Sam Heughan is 6'3"
lovelylovelove · 13/08/2020 22:56

@Patienceisvirtuous

Totally disagree re Rene as Bridget - I can’t imagine anyone but her!
Same here. I think she is perfect for the role and her accent really believable.
thebatman · 13/08/2020 22:56

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale

Peter Capaldi in Dr Who. Far too sinister for my liking.
Which is exactly what I loved about him, you never knew just how far he would go, I think Capaldi was a brilliant Doctor, woefully mishandled by the writing and that twat Moffat.

@sobersides

I always thought Kate Winslet looked like she could eat Leonardo di Caprio for breakfast in Titanic. She looked way too old for him. I would have thought a slightly older rougher Jack to Kate's Rose or a younger more delicate Rose for Leo's Jack. An example of great casting for me would be the whole cast of Versailles. Perfection!
Agree. She looked way to old for him.
Prophetorwell · 13/08/2020 23:17

Peeta was the worst miscasting ever - Katniss towered over him. Ruined the films for me, as it was inconceivable there would be any chemistry between the two.

Emma Watson in everything but especially as Belle. Most of the Little Women characters, but Laurie was a shocker! I’ve loved every version of LW from films to TV adaptations but couldn’t enjoy this one.

Eddie Redmayne is someone who stands out to me as always being the perfect choice for whatever he’s in.

Grandma60 · 13/08/2020 23:30

Definitely Olivia Colman in The Crown. Complete let down after the convincing and credible Claire Foy
And Colin Firth in Mamma Mia - not his finest hour Sad

LadyEloise · 13/08/2020 23:36

I agree @sobersides re Leonardo di Caprio in Titanic. He looked too young fir Kate Winslett.

TiredyMcTired · 13/08/2020 23:39

Keira Knightley in P&P, I seethed with rage when I watched that movie, whoever cast her as Lizzie Bennett must have been absolutely off their heads on something.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 13/08/2020 23:43

@ScammedOrWhat not sure if someone has corrected you as I've still not finished the thread, but the twins are actually brunet. They dyed their hair for the films. And, exactly as the characters would do, skipped school to audition.

Also saw someone say Hugh Jackamn was miscast for Wolverine and I have to strongly object because he is perfect. My 9 yr old self fell in love with him and I still am. Can't bring myself to say goodbye to his character so haven't watched Logan yet. 😭😭

Crosswithlifeatm · 13/08/2020 23:45

I think Peet's in the Hunger Games was so charmless with no charisma,it was hard to believe as a love story and there was no chemistry between the leads.
Emma Watson and Daniel Ratcliff were too stagey and outclassed by many of the other children and the adults in Harry Potter.
They don't seem to be in much now so perhaps film producers agree.

Crosswithlifeatm · 13/08/2020 23:47

And Kiera knightly all wrong in P&P as Elizabeth,far too passive.

Carpedimum · 13/08/2020 23:50

No no @Smellbellina I totally agree! JL lovely to look at, but I hate watching actors that you can ‘see’ acting & he’s the epitome of that.

Tavannach · 13/08/2020 23:59

Agree with Florence Pugh as Amy March. Too old to pass for a 12 year old at the start.

eilum · 14/08/2020 00:06

Hi all.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 14/08/2020 00:06

Agree with many already mentioned. Apparently Kate Winslet regrets taking the role in Titanic, she cringes at her accent.

I hated Leo Dicaprio in The Beach. I read the book first and he was all wrong. I always thought of Richard as attractive but not gorgeous looking and he was BRITISH! also they shouldn’t have changed the plot for him to hook up with the French girl (I assume they thought if it’s Leo he must have a romantic interest). I thought John Simm would’ve been great in the role. However Robert Carlyle as Daffy was excellent.

I’ve only seen Mama Mia: here we go again recently..I didn’t think the lass playing a young Julie Walters nailed the accent. Also Cher as Donna’s Mum was bizarre. There’s only a few years between Cher and Meryl Streep! I guess Meryl was playing a 50 something in the original but it felt all wrong.

Angrywife · 14/08/2020 00:46

The fella that played Christian in the first 50 shades.
I loved him in The Fall but dont think he was right for Christian

Sarahbeans · 14/08/2020 00:52

Agree with so many of these.

Mamma Mia - Meryl Streep was far too old to conceivably be Sophie's mum. Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth aren't great either. And Cher is nowhere near old enough to be Meryl Streep's mum. There's only a few years between them in real life.

Doctor Who - Agree Jodie Whittaker seems like a caricature of the Doctor. But I think Matt Smith was too.

Dakota Johnson in 50 shades, to me, she's just too ordinary and lacks the charisma to win over Christian Gray.

Grease - most of the actors were way to old to be believable teenagers, but Stockard Channing particularly so.

Mary Poppins - Dick Van Dyke is not believable at all

And finally, I did not find Gina McKee convincing in the Forsyte Saga. She's pretty, but her character was supposed to be stunning, to turn heads and ooze charisma. I found her just too ordinary looking. Although it was a great series and I loved her acting.

Glamazoni · 14/08/2020 00:57

Gary Oldman in Tiptoes. He’s a normal size person so I found it pretty offensive that he was shuffling around on his knees playing a person with dwarfism. Especially when the very capable Peter Dinklage was in the movie playing a minor role!

orangejuicer · 14/08/2020 01:17

I think I'm on my own here but I love pretty much all the films being slated here, because of the casting. Oh no, am I a terrible person?

TyroSaysMeow · 14/08/2020 01:41

Every time I see that photo of a tall, beardless male claiming to be Cheery Littlebottom, it gives me rage. And David Jason was every kind of wrong as Rincewind; should've been played by Simon Pegg.

Also about 90% of the HP cast, as many others have said. The kids are dire, the adults are all too old, and I can't decide which annoys me more, Watson's eyebrows or Thewlis's moustache.

Mumcicle · 14/08/2020 02:01

@Mercedes519

Can we include TV shows?

Jamie in Outlander. Red-head yes, buff, tick. But not tall enough. He’s a virtual giant in the books...

Nope, the actor is 6’3 and the book Jamie 6’4, so pretty close, I would say. It’s just that everyone else is too tall, especially Claire (while shows Brianna is way too short). I guess people used to be much shorter in the past and someone as tall as 6’4 was almost a giant.
IdblowJonSnow · 14/08/2020 02:19

All of the women in James bond ever. The older james is, the younger the counterparts are. It really irks me, the idea that all these young women would fancy a guy in his 50s or older.
Olivia Coleman in the crown.
Tom Hardy in Peaky Blinders. Controversial I know.

Bl3ss3dm0m · 14/08/2020 03:47

Billy Crystal as Harry. I couldn't fancy him, so I didn't see how she could!

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher - neither my DH nor I could understand that casting, both in height and looks. Mind you, I can't think of anything I do like Tom Cruise in, so I'm guessing I just don't like Tom Cruise.

Going against the grain here, I thought all the Harry Potter young actors were spot on, and I had read all the books before I watched their matching films. I think I liked the sort of "awkwardness" of the main child actors because it helped show they were different to muggles. I felt that they sort of needed that difference, and whereas in most book to film conversions I don't usually agree with the acting choices, these seemed very good to me.

Again, someone didn't like the cast of Twighlight, I thought they were just right.

Renee Z IS Bridget Jones.

Leonardo DiCaprio way too young looking for Titanic.

Daniel Craig as James Bond - no just no. I don't find him at all good looking, and he does not do suave/denonair. However, so many woman seem to swoon over him, so maybe I have a wonky taste in men!

I know this thread is miscast, but I think the choice of Eddie Redmayne in Fantastic Beasts and where to find them, was inspired - he is brilliant in it.

PuddyMuddles4 · 14/08/2020 04:04

I've just watched Patient Zero. WTF is casting Matt Smith desperately trying to 'do' an American accent all about? Don't they have enough actual American actors to play the role? Natalie Dormer was very 'plasticky' as well.
