In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

@Pinnacular omg An Awfully Big Adventure! Alan Rickman's entry on the motorbike.... he hadn't said a word and I was frantically fanning myself having slid off the low sofa onto the floor Blush

@TrixieMixie

Keira Knightley in everything. That fakey smile she does irritates me to fuck. And Gwyneth Paltrow in everything too, because it's so obvious she just loves herself. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I think Margot Robbie is a brilliant young actress who is under-rated and incredibly versatile. I also adore Cate Blanchett. They never seem miscast, perhaps because they are such good actors.
Totally agreed on Keira Knightley and her smile!

Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire. I was addicted to the books back in the day and he was utterly and completely wrong for the role of Lestat. Brad Pitt would have been slightly wrong for that role too, but much, much, so MUCH better than Cruise.

Emily blunt in Mary poppins returns
Lily James would’ve been better

I get a bit irritated when casting doesn’t take account of genetics -for example the three sisters in Downton Abbey didn’t look like they shared a gene between them. In the United States of Tara - the father John Corbett is about 6’5 and his son was 5’7’’ - just didn’t work for me.
I don’t watch Corrie but my Dad does and I have to endure it when I’m visiting. Sarah Platt's daughter looked older than her. That sort of thing really annoys me too.
Lily James annoys me in everything she is in but I don’t think being annoying or being a bad actor is the same as being miscast. Miscast means not fitting the role physically or as the character - she is definitely miscast for Mrs De Winter.

As for the poster laughing at everyone because she thinks we don’t know that actors are cast because of bank ability- think everyone knows that but it doesn’t mean we can’t point out when it goes horribly wrong. And it doesn’t explain the casting of HP children when they were complete Unknowns.

@areyoubeingserviced

Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3 Excruciating
Yes!!
takethegirloutofwales · 13/08/2020 20:58

For me it has to be Rosalind Pike I’m Gone Girl. I’d built up this person in my head after reading the book and she couldn’t have been further from it. I still can’t watch the film - I managed about an hour of it I think.

@Giggorata

Ian McShane as Merriman Lyon (Merlin) in the Dark is Rising film. So wrong for that part, although good in other stuff, like American Gods. No one but Christopher Lee should ever play Merriman. (More time travel needed) The whole film was awful, transposed to America, losing its magical Albion aspects. Such a disappointment. I live in hope of a good British remake.
And me. I loved those books as a kid and was so excited about the film when it eventually came around but it was such a disappointment. Absolutely criminal waste of a good opportunity!

Agreeing with loads of these.

Kiera Knightley in many things. She's a stunning looking actress, and correctly cast can be wonderful, but she's not restrained enough for P&P. No chemistry with Matthew McFadyen either.

Mind you, I though Ehle and Firth totally nailed P&P - a very hard act to follow.

Yes to Pierce Brosnan and Russell Crowe being pulled up for their singing - but I thought they were okay otherwise - bring back dubbing.

But I really loved the Harry Potter casting - I guess it helps that I hadn't read the books first. Same with most films I think.

Nic Cage in Mandolin - what a waste of a great book.

HairyPottyMouth · 13/08/2020 21:01

Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, the replacement dumbledore.

Cloudspotter · 13/08/2020 21:04

Oh, oh, forgot to mention Emilia Clarke as Danaerys in GOT.

Rubbish. Nowhere near imposing enough.

And Shailene Woodley in Divergent. Triss was meant to be short with a big nose!

beguilingeyes · 13/08/2020 21:05

Oh god, that Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy film was soooo bad. I could get behind Bill Might as Slartibartfast but Martin Freeman seemed way too young to be Arthur. I always thought Hugh Laurie would've been perfect.

AriesTheRam · 13/08/2020 21:10

Keira Knightly in anything.Cant stand the woman!

Deadringer · 13/08/2020 21:19
@wtfdidwedo I live Meryl but she can't sing! It's a musical! Granted she's not as sketchy as Brosnan
Wow. Of all the actors in Mama Mia, it seems weird to criticise Meryl Syreep's singing. She is one of the few two actors in it who can sing.

Snog · 13/08/2020 21:24

Daniel Craig in Knives Out
Shockingly awful Deep South accent

Hepzibar · 13/08/2020 21:53

@TroysMammy Stephen Tomkinson as DCI Banks. I've got all the books and he is definitely not DCI Banks.

Came on here to say exactly this. Could not agree more - he is not Banks

Likewise Keira Knightly is not Elizabeth Bennett, neither was Matthew Macfadyen Mr Darcy, dreadful film with dreadful casting.

The token Americans in British films for box office are always dubious Andi McDowell 4Weddings and even worse Jack Black as KW's love interest. Ludicrous and his acting (script) was worse.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/08/2020 22:01

Peter Capaldi in Dr Who. Far too sinister for my liking.

Miljea · 13/08/2020 22:10

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Snakes in the grass.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 13/08/2020 22:18

Jodie Whittaker as Dr Who
I was never happy about a female Doctor but I like Jodie and thought she might carry it off . Sadly she didn't - far too breathy. At the same time, the writers destroyed the whole franchise anyway.

thatone · 13/08/2020 22:22

Olivia Williams as Jane Fairfax in Emma - have never understood that.

thatone · 13/08/2020 22:23

Agree that Matthew McFadyean was NOT Darcy.

Nowifi · 13/08/2020 22:25

Haven't read the thread too long sorry! Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train and anything with Anne Hathaway in it, especially "one day"!

Dozer · 13/08/2020 22:28

Oh no, I loved Matthew Mcfaddyen as darcy! But his looks in it are far more my type than colin firth’s.

Stressing · 13/08/2020 22:41

Anne Hathaway in One Day.

Guylan · 13/08/2020 22:44

I didn’t like Matthew McFadyen in P & P because I don’t fancy him whilst I positively swooned at Firth’s Darcy.

Anything with Emma Watson or Daniel Radcliffe because I don’t think they can act.
