In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

OP posts:

Andi Mcdowell in ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral‘

Andylion · 14/08/2020 04:36

Stephen Tomkinson as DCI Banks. I've got all the books and he is definitely not DCI Banks.

He's like a foot too tall. In my head I imagine Peter Mullan, with the appropriate accent.

FixItUpChappie · 14/08/2020 04:41

recently watched the film ‘Knives Out’ with Daniel Craig playing a private detective with a Southern (American) accent. IMO he just couldn’t do it, he kept going in and out of his English accent"

I loved this movie! I don't think his accent mattered it was all quirky and fun Grin

Tom Burke as Cormoran Strike

@SimonJT can I ask who you would have cast in this? I imagined someone less attractive.

Andylion · 14/08/2020 04:55

@TinyTear

Has anyone said Michael Fassbender as Mr Rochester? HE is supposed to be UGLY for fuck's sake!!
How about Timothy Dalton's Mr. Rochester?

I’m not sure, to be honest, but he didn’t fit the description in the book at all, they didn’t even try to make him look like him, he could have had a curly wig etc. To be fair the actor who played Robyn didn’t work well either, she came across as too airy fairy.
Beanie3 · 14/08/2020 07:33

Miscast?, why every politician that ever there was. Biggest drama queens and mostly unconvincing in act or deed.

ArDali1 · 14/08/2020 09:03

Shock maybe because I grew up watching all HP films I never thought the actors were awful. Can't imagine anyone else as harry, Hermione and Ron.

Naomi Scott as Jasmine in Aladdin (although the film is no where near as good as the original) why Guy Ritchie couldn't cast a middle Eastern girl which would have made more sense as the actor who played Aladdin was a perfect fit.

ArDali1 · 14/08/2020 09:05

Oh and Daniel Craig as Bond.
I think he's an awful actor anyway. Just an annoying presence.

LadyEloise · 14/08/2020 09:25

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne.
Having read the books, Matt was not how I imagined Jason Bourne to look like as Matt was too immature and unsophisticated looking for this particular character imho.

bumbleb33s · 14/08/2020 09:31

not sure if anyone's said this one as I've not read the whole thread, but Jamie Dornan as Mr Grey ... after reading the book he is totally miscast, as much as I like him as an actor !

bumbleb33s · 14/08/2020 09:35

oh, and Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher!

I've read Lee Child's books and JR is a 6'5 brutal ex-military officer with a 50-inch chest, Tom Cruise is a 5'7 nice boy, totally miscast imo!

sugarbum · 14/08/2020 09:43

^Tom Cruise as The Vampire Lestat.

Natalie Portman in Thor.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Pots in Iron Man.^

I was going to say two of these myself, and actually, now you mention the third, I agree with that too. Its not that Cruise is a bad actor, I think he did a really good job, its just that he never really looked the part, and it wasn't just the bad blonde wig. I thought Kirsten Dunst was incredible, although she was a teensy bit too old for Claudia.

Natalie Portman - WTAF was that about? She's a great actress in the right role, but this was NOT the right role. Irritating, simpering mess. I preferred the woman who played her assistant.

Gwynnie - again, she can knock it out of the park when she wants to, but she brings a certain blandness to Pepper Potts

Also, I agree with 'knives out'. There was an incredible cast, but Daniel Craig felt quite wrong, and it was just a bit, over-cast for me, if that's a thing. The lead actress was perfect though. I'm still wondering if anyone ever found the sick in the plant pot...

AuntieJoyce · 14/08/2020 09:59

Just leaving this out here. The one and only Arthur Dent

Martin Freeman being only capable of playing himself in every show he gets shoehorned into

HalfBloodPrincess · 14/08/2020 10:04

Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross in kiss the girls/along came a spider.
Get the ick every time I see in him something else now.

Zenithbear · 14/08/2020 10:14

Kate Capshaw as Willie Scott in indiana Jones and the temple of doom. Worst a ting ever
I get that they wanted someone different to Marion in Raiders of the lost ark but Kate was atrocious. And just happened to be dating Stephen Spielberg.

Zenithbear · 14/08/2020 10:15

*acting not a ting

I thought Russel Crowe in Les Mis as I opened it and there he is in the OP!

MotheringShites · 14/08/2020 11:00

Lots of mentions of Emma Watson as Belle and I thoroughly agree, but casting Dan Stevens as the beast was a travesty!

I have to admit I love the Ray Winstone version of Henry VIII - surely the prize for the worst casting of all time was Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in the role.

Ardsallagh · 14/08/2020 11:10

I thought she was fine, but it was a misogynistically-conceived, dopey part -- she's just a ditzy airhead there as highly-gendered comic relief, screaming about bugs, animals and breaking a nail.

But the nadir of female acting in Indiana Jones films has got to be Alison Doody in The Last Crusade. She was remarkably beautiful, but looked as if she were reading off a badly-printed autocue the whole time, and her (Austrian?) accent was atrocious.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 14/08/2020 12:09

Russell Crowe in anything really. The gurning potato.

Dr Who- I adore Peter Capaldi (my favourite film is Local Hero) but the writing is shocking and Clara (a schoolteacher in a mini skirt who looks 11 and belongs to the "if in doubt shout" school of acting-. Awful.
I loathe Matt Smith- but the writing made some of his Dr career wonderful.

SkaterGrrrrl · 14/08/2020 12:29

"Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby, def think Blake Lively should have got that part."

BL would have been perfect!! She could have just played Serena!

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 14/08/2020 12:38

I haven't rtft so someone may have mentioned it but Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland in Judy. I think she won an oscar for it.
The problem wasnt her acting really which I think was fine, it's rather that she does that thing with her mouth (you know what I mean) and it meant I could only see Renee Zellweger every time she was on screen. Very poor casting.

polkadotpjs · 14/08/2020 12:45

Another who thinks RZ shouldn't have been Bridget. Good English accent for all those who think that's how we speak in England but not how I saw the character
