When I first saw/ heard of this film I thought no way, mum and kids not my thing, worst fear having/ Not being able to protect my children so watching it would be horrendous. But lots of people saying it's really good.

Have you seen it?
Is it good?
Is it scary?

Ok spoiler alert I loved it, my dp said there were he was disappointed, he couldn’t get his head around why the ‘thing’ was outside only, and couldn’t get inside and why were there some ‘sighted’ people who were partially affected and not others.
I loved it but wish she’d called girl Cinderella at the end, Orlando would’ve wanted that.

Daffyduckface · 29/12/2018 16:28

Ok first sentence made no sense lol, **my DP said there were holes and he was disappointed

Burnt0range · 29/12/2018 16:29

It's decent, but doesn't answer all the questions you accumulate over the course of the film.

TheFirstOHN · 29/12/2018 16:44

There's not a strong understanding of mental illness there at all. Mental illness is not binary, and in most people the severity of illness varies over time.

What level of psychosis is needed to qualify for the club that goes around without blindfolds and wants everyone to look? Who decides the threshold? If you were in the middle of an episode of psychosis, saw a creature, survived, then got better, what then?

Mynameisntmaud · 29/12/2018 20:09

I'm quite easily pleased to be honest haha. As long as I'm entertained I'm happy generally. Wish I'd known about/ read the book first though x

In the book it's possible for them to get inside.

I didn't think the book much better than the film. It was present tense third person which I really don't like reading usually although I did persevere. It was good. As was the film. But I enjoyed the film more than the book for once.

Fantasisa · 29/12/2018 23:45

I enjoyed the film but was left dissatisfied. I just felt ‘what’s the point?’ and I wanted to know why and how they had ended up out in the woods for so long. Also calling them ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ were to all intents and purposes names so I didn’t see how that was meant to be deep in reality.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 29/12/2018 23:49

I thought it was ok. But not as brilliant as I was expecting. It felt like the beginning of a series rather than a film.

cavycavy · 29/12/2018 23:57

It was the kind of film that makes you feel anxious all the way through. I hate that feeling but feel compelled to watch them anyway.

My husband and I kept laughing at how implausible it was that a 5 year old would stay quiet with a blindfold on for THAT long. Our daughter would have fallen off the boat at the very beginning just through sheer clumsiness, let alone the rapids!

And I kept thinking, when and how are they going to the toilet?

I was also confused by the ‘criminally insane’ people wanting to see the “thing”. but put it down to Americans just being a bit behind the times when it comes to mental illness etc.

(Sorry to any Americans reading this... I’m generalising massively)

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 30/12/2018 00:04

I thought it was fine, not great but enjoyable enough to pass the time whilst I wrapped presents last week.

user1483390742 · 30/12/2018 00:07

Watched it with my teens (14 and 16) and we all enjoyed it!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/12/2018 16:41

cavycavy, there's mention in the books about training the children to be quiet from birth and training them to wake up with their eyes closed, and to learn to listen to and identify sounds around them.

Also mention of them weeing in the boat!

Nothisispatrick · 31/12/2018 09:46

I thought it was good. Not scary but tense and creepy. I’ve read the book and loved it, it is much more disturbing than the film.

In the book she trains the children from birth to have super listening skills, I don’t think that was used much in the film. I also don’t think Tom is with them? He dies in the original house invasion thing with everyone else, it’s just her and the kids.

A plot hole we noticed is that when the creatures were near there was wind and you heard voices. So technically you would know they were coming and could cover your eyes. I don’t think you knew when they were there or heard voices in the book.

SalmonLeBon · 31/12/2018 09:48

As usual, the book is better than the film but it is pretty decent

As I thought the book was poor, I guess I should skip the film then. 😂

MarmiteTermite · 31/12/2018 09:50

I enjoyed it

GinandGingerBeer · 31/12/2018 10:01

I thought it was awful, full of plot holes, v cheesy ending which made us all simultaneously groan. I wanted the final shot to be one of the kids looking towards the camera with wild eyes.
My ending is much better Grin

lazysummer · 04/01/2019 12:16

It was a good watch, but the ending was terrible!

Gth1234 · 04/01/2019 12:38

It reminded me of Day of The Triffids, although nothing like as good.
The trouble is that the ending doesn't solve the problems, unlike perhaps the ending in "I am Legend"

Now a remake of "Day of the Triffids" …..

Gth1234 · 04/01/2019 12:39

As I said elsewhere. Could have been worse. It could have been "downsizing"

miltonroad · 04/01/2019 12:49

I thought it borrowed heavily from day of the triffids but it was definitely worth a watch

sparklefarts · 04/01/2019 12:56

I enjoyed it but DD thought it was rubbish as she didn't see how being confronted with a maths exam would make people kill themselves.

sparklefarts · 04/01/2019 12:56

Post fail I meant :

I enjoyed it but DD thought it was rubbish as she didn't see how being confronted with a maths exam would make people kill themselves.

Did I miss something? Or have I already forgotten? What maths?

WinnieFosterTether · 04/01/2019 13:07

I feel like I missed parts - what maths exam? And when did it say the people who looked were all criminally insane?

boble1 · 04/01/2019 13:07

Did the book end differently?

CTRL · 04/01/2019 13:15

I watched it and it was ok but don’t see what the big fuss is all about.

The haunting of hill house however - that was good ☺️
