When I first saw/ heard of this film I thought no way, mum and kids not my thing, worst fear having/ Not being able to protect my children so watching it would be horrendous. But lots of people saying it's really good.

Have you seen it?
Is it good?
Is it scary?

There is a significant difference at the end of the book which makes a bit more sense than the blandness of the film's ending

Ajax74 · 05/01/2019 23:26

I know it's not relevant but I love Sandra bullock but she had some major work on her face! Excellent film

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2019 23:32

Just watched it. Thought it was a load of rubbish, to be frank. Have read the book and thought that really lost its way.

mountainlakes · 05/01/2019 23:44

How did the birds in the box not drown or get squashed every time they fell over?
How did she get from the town with two babies to the country house with no car?
How did they get the food while they were pregnant without a car?
How did the children not drown?
Why couldn't the monsters go inside?
How long would my children stick still and keep their blindfolds on at that age? Umm 30 seconds...
What mental illness meant you wanted people to see?
Why were they immune to killing themselves?
Where did the suicide inducing things come from?
Why did the director spend so long on us getting to know all of the relationships? Boring!
Why did they let the new guy stay? Haven't they seen films like this?
I think film endings should leave the questions answered.

chloeataylor · 06/01/2019 02:24

It’s an amazing film but very intense x

Blueemeraldagain · 06/01/2019 02:45

unsuitable for young children Probably why it’s rated 15 then.

TantricTwist · 06/01/2019 02:57

Having dogs in the film would have made more sense, particularly with how she managed to survive for 5 years unharmed with the 2 children.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 06/01/2019 07:32

Excellent film! Yes lots of unanswered questions which is disappointing but very enjoyable

ParadiseLaundry · 06/01/2019 09:38

Thanks for the explanation of the dogs in the books everyone. Agree, they should have included those parts in the film.

WWYDhelpplease · 06/01/2019 10:22

I’m watching it now. They’ve just arrived at the supermarket.

LadyKalila · 06/01/2019 10:23

Got bored with it,far too predictable.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/01/2019 11:37

Loved it!

The Bullock was fab although needs to stop mucking about with her face. She's 54!

Kintan · 06/01/2019 11:52

I enjoyed the film, but was a bit frustrated that there was no real explanation about why/where/how the whole situation had come about.

AmateurSwami · 06/01/2019 22:54

Crap and boring

CountessOfNowhere · 06/01/2019 23:14

DD loved it, I was a bit meh. Which is odd because it's more my sort of thing than hers. I just found it quite hard to follow and was frustrated at the number of loose ends left untied. Plus, like a PP, was left wondering why there weren't more babies!

Lol at the idea of watching it through a filtering service! Nobody here is suggesting letting children watch it but some of us do have adult DC...

cakedup · 07/01/2019 00:47

It was over hyped. Worth a watch but personally I didn't find it that intense or moving. I just couldn't take it seriously at times, like, what are the chances that two pre-school children a box of birds would all survive a rapid?

There is some talk online of how the film is stigmatising mental health issues. The supermarket guy who got out of prison and was a bit weird, patients of a psychiatric hospital - these people were 'baddies' in the film.

Wallabyone · 07/01/2019 01:27

Watched this at my husband's suggestion tonight. I didn't like it, and now I can't sleep because I feel too revved up-it was horrible, and crap Confused

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 07/01/2019 09:59

I haven't read the book but I really disliked the film (we watched it the day before yesterday). I just thought it was a bit of an idiotic and unbelievable scenario, loads of plot holes, crap acting, unlikable characters, I don't like being scared, and it was just annoying. I only finished it because DH was watching it too. Though he didn't particularly like it too. I can't understand why people like it! Generic hollywood crap. On the other hand, we watched The GrandBudapest Hotel yesterday, and I LOVED that!!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 07/01/2019 10:53

Watched it last night ,

I enjoyed it if that's the right word . Just found it perhaps a bit overlong and there were parts where it was somewhat slow but that was for character building I expect .

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 07/01/2019 10:53

No idea why the stray bold there .

DippyAvocado · 07/01/2019 10:56

I thought it was quite watchable but full of plot holes if you stop to think about it.

How did she get from the town with two babies to the country house with no car?

I thought it was the same house as before, but lots of vegetation had grown up around it?

dementedpixie · 07/01/2019 11:08

It wad the same house. There was a well and a river at the back of it

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 07/01/2019 11:12

I think the same as you DippyAvocado

Raeraemcrae · 07/01/2019 16:04

No no that’s not a response to someone on here, just a warning to parents of kids, because I know some parents locally who watched it with their kids, knowing nothing abt the book. Something abt the movie - the kids, the birds - the fact it’s a streaming service, not at the theatre? - I don’t know, made them take that risk. It’s my first post to Mumsnet, and I was in a rush, sorry if my first post was unclear.

Raeraemcrae · 07/01/2019 16:10

I respond to this above. Sorry, I see that a lot of people seem to think I’m speaking to someone specific here. I’m just giving a general warning because in the days before I saw this post I spoke to parents here who had watched it as a family, and kids having nightmares. It’s just an FYI for anyone who may be considering it.
I watch most films with a filtering service. I don’t enjoy bad language. I find it creeps out in my own life, if I listen to a lot in entertainment. I LOVE suspenseful movies, and enjoyed aspects of Birdbox. I thought the ending was lovely, not cheesy. I just wish I hadn’t missed filtering out the scissors scene. That was disturbing for me. I didn’t know it was a horror film. I’d never heard of the book. I just thought it was a dystopian, end of world scenario.
