When I first saw/ heard of this film I thought no way, mum and kids not my thing, worst fear having/ Not being able to protect my children so watching it would be horrendous. But lots of people saying it's really good.

Have you seen it?
Is it good?
Is it scary?

I enjoyed however I really thought towards the end that everyone would make themselves turn blind (I think I actually read after I watched it that this happens in the book).

Also I blame Olympia for causing everyone to die and Girl should have been called Cinderella and boy should have been called DouglasGrin

Also where did the two (forget their names) that took the car and left go Confused

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 18:43

At the refuge, some of them had made themselves blind ay an earlier time. In the book Olympia doesn't mention Cinderella or other Disney princesses!

planespotting · 04/01/2019 18:52

I might watch it tonight and report

NameChanger22 · 04/01/2019 18:52

I watched it and loved it. It's exactly the kind of film I love. We need more science fiction/apocalyptic/futuristic/dystopian films. I think I'm going to watch it again because I missed a few things. It isn't scary, I thought it might be at the start. I haven't read the book. I find reading the book beforehand can ruin a good film.

ParadiseLaundry · 04/01/2019 18:55

Pivot, I assumed they drove back to the supermarket as the woman looked interested in JM's plan to stay there on their trip.

ParadiseLaundry · 04/01/2019 18:56

Also I agree she should have called the girl Cinderella as that was the mum's favourite name. And just think, in that dystopian future there would be no mumsnet to tear the name apart Grin

PivotPivotPivottt · 04/01/2019 19:19

Paradise I did wonder if they went back to ok the supermarket but thought there was nothing to suggest that's where they'd gone so I wasn't sure. I obviously missed the woman showing an interest in the earlier suggestion so that makes sense.

I have another question! Why did Boy call Malory by her name and not Mum? I assume Malory had some sort of emotional detachment by calling the children Girl and Boy and he wasn't aware that she was his mum? I know that last sentence is gibberish and makes no sense I'm not very good at writing what I'm trying to say.

Hubblebubble64 · 04/01/2019 19:20

Rubbish, so disappointed love Sandra Bullock.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 19:21

In the book no-one steals the car and I'm sure they call her mom/mommy in it too

sheepsheep · 04/01/2019 20:17

This was the part that annoyed me the most about the whole thing. It was bad enough to have to go through all that, did they really need to add in this whole struggle with motherhood thing too? Malorie was struggling to attach even while pregnant at the start. So it was all a continuation of that. Did she really need to be chased by supernatural beings for 5 years to learn how to love her child? Bah.

Also, going down the rapids, why didn't she tie the kids to her? Watching them all fall out of the boat made me annoyed rather than tense because it was so obvious.

The pace also didn't work. Fast slow slower, little bit of action, slower slower. And a lot of the scenes with John Malkovich were funny, which was jarring against the topic of the film.

ReanimatedSGB · 04/01/2019 22:39

Not sure whether I want to watch it or not (actually we don't have Netflix, which probably settles that question). I liked the book, found it genuinely scary, and I really can't imagine it working very well as a film. (The bit that haunts me from the book is when she's in the club with the dog, and the mystery monsters get the dog...)

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 22:39

The dog bit isn't in the film

Riversguidebook · 04/01/2019 22:44

I didn’t like the stepchild thing ;

that despite her clear difficulties bonding with her biological baby through pregnancy and after, she couldn’t bond with the other child she’d nurtured since it’s birth too.

That the stepchild knew she would have to agree to make the big decision in the story by the look on her face, and that Sandra knew the child knew, but let it go ahead with the decision anyway.

Also, any kayaker watching this is cringing at how they ran those rapids Grin

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 22:52

In the book she looks rather than asking one of the kids to do it

AnonymousAgain · 04/01/2019 22:53

I really enjoyed it.

Although I am a bit funny about films and danger to kids, I found this tense but fine

Lozz22 · 04/01/2019 23:11

@DonDrapersOldFashioned Oh thank god!! I thought it was just me that thought it was utter shite!! I turned it off halfway through

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/01/2019 00:25

reanimated the dog bit in the bar actually made me cry in the book. The whole dog part (the “guide dogs”) was missed out in the film.

Wincarnis · 05/01/2019 02:46

Didn’t like it at all, thought it was boring

Esqueleto · 05/01/2019 06:06

I watch a lot of horror/thriller films and thought this was appalling.

Things that bugged me:
John malcovitch didn't seem remotely bothered that his wife died.
If the babies had been forced to look surely they weren't capable of killing themselves anyway.
The kids would surely have never been in open water before yet managed pretty well in those rapids.

ParadiseLaundry · 05/01/2019 08:13

Can someone tell us more about the dog in the club thing?

FamilyOfAliens · 05/01/2019 08:21

The birds in the box would never have made it through the rapids.

dementedpixie · 05/01/2019 09:35

Can someone tell us more about the dog in the club thing?

In the book they have a couple of dogs and Malory goes in search of microphones at a nearby club with them. They aren't sure if animals are affected by the creatures but on that trip she finds out they are. She hears them attack themselves and there is a description of the noises they make as she can only hear them not see them

dementedpixie · 05/01/2019 09:46

Sorry, she only takes 1 dog rather than multiple

PilingOnThePounds · 05/01/2019 10:41

I watched it last night and quite liked it. But I just didn't get it. Are there monsters that make them commit suicide? And are there some people who are immune from The power these monsters have over people?

Going to read the book. Could answer all my questions.

ReanimatedSGB · 05/01/2019 10:52

It's a while since I read the book tbh but aren't her kids twins in the book version? Or is it the case that her also-pregnant friend dies so she brings up the friend's DC with her own?
