When I first saw/ heard of this film I thought no way, mum and kids not my thing, worst fear having/ Not being able to protect my children so watching it would be horrendous. But lots of people saying it's really good.

Have you seen it?
Is it good?
Is it scary?

Did I miss something? Or have I already forgotten? What maths?
I think the implication was that the creatures made you see your biggest fear which then somehow caused you to commit suicide, so the OP's daughter was making a joke about her biggest fear i.e. a maths exam.

I also felt the movie was a bit of a letdown, why didn't they listen to John Malkovich! Had they never seen an apocalypse movie before Grin

Excellent film.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 04/01/2019 13:33

Though intense, the more I think about it the more rubbish it was Grin

I mean the different character tropes in the house (typical), the fact that Tom dies in the end when he didn't even really have to open his eyes, the children being called boy and girl (lame) then being named after Olympia (the person who caused almost everyone to get killed) and the boy Tom , what happened to the self-fish idiots that stole the car?, why did Charlie sacrifice himself and not just help to push the door?, why does no one use a long stick when they have a blind-fold on??? Where is all the food for the people in the haven ...Grin

MistressoftheYoniverse · 04/01/2019 13:36

Over hyped nonsense...I think I may have watched too many movies Grin

IamFrauBlucher · 04/01/2019 13:42

I was a bit "Meh" about it too, to be honest.

To me it was just a redone sort of mashup of "The Happening" and "The Mist".

NutElla5x · 04/01/2019 13:47

An pretty good film, but not particularly scary and highly overated in my opinion.

floribunda18 · 04/01/2019 13:47

The premise sounds too rubbish and manipulative to interest me.

ParadiseLaundry · 04/01/2019 13:50

I watched this a few days ago and enjoyed it but it gave me awful nightmares (but tbf Wall E gave me nightmares also Grin)

What exactly was the deal with Gary? Why did the birds not react to him when he first came in? Or did he only get 'infected' after looking at the pictures?

Was it expanded on in the book what the creatures were?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/01/2019 13:55

I thought the book was fantastic. It is so menacing. I think they made a lot of changes in the film, particularly in relation to Tom, and while I enjoyed it, I far preferred the book.

planespotting · 04/01/2019 14:05

Also my worst fears of not being able to protect children played out in this.
So if I Watched it will I be anxious about DC?

DoingMyBest2010 · 04/01/2019 14:06

I didn't like it.

Blush can't believe how obvious that was and I missed it. Thank you!

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 04/01/2019 15:24

Awful!

BabyBunk18 · 04/01/2019 15:33

I watched the film with my Husband the other night and I thought it was really good! not as scary as we would have liked but it had me on the edge of my seat wondering what what was gonna happen next! The only part that made me feel very uneasy was that psychopath going mental round the newborn babies (but that was probably just me being stupid and my hormones/ maternal instincts over my baby girl GrinHmm

MustBeThin · 04/01/2019 15:34

I don't know whether to watch this film! I only got about a third of they way through the book and gave up and I don't take quitting books lightly. I thought it was rubbish, not necessarily the concept but the writing style.

MarmiteTermite · 04/01/2019 15:37

It reminded me of The Day of the Triffids but I can’t remember how that ended?

Nesssie · 04/01/2019 15:48

I liked it! Thought it was similar to A Quiet Place but much scarier as you never saw the monsters, and being blind is obviously scarier than not being able to talk.
I don;t like scary movies but this was more about the suspense.

The 'monsters' must be something to do with deceased loved ones as the lady at the beginning started talking to her mum, and Mallory heard Tom at the end after he died. That's my theory anyway.

Rubenesque · 04/01/2019 15:50

I enjoyed it and found it very tense but then I don't watch horrors or thrillers usually. DH and I usually pick films to pieces and I could've done with this one I guess but just really liked it.

I didn't get the reference to the maths exam though - which reminds me more of Harry Potter Wink

emmylousings · 04/01/2019 18:12

I dislike violence and gore in film generally, but was persuaded to watch it by my 14 yo DS, who assured me I would find it interesting; I did, and it's tense, but agree about the plot holes - you need to suspend reality!

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 18:22

There were quite a few differences to the book. I read the book after seeing the film.

Malory was on her own straight after the birth of the babies as Tom died when the curtains were pulled from the windows. The creatures can get on but only if you leave doors/ Windows open. She trained them from babies to keep eyes closed and trained them to have great hearing/ listening skills

No-one runs off with the car, there is no scary forest scene with voices and leaves/ trees moving. There are no river rapids to survive and they don't take the birds with them

Nothisispatrick · 04/01/2019 18:26

This isn’t in the book as far as I remember. Maybe someone who read it more recently can confirm?

Going on the film, based on Gary’s drawings it looks like the monsters can appear differently rather than just being one thing.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 18:28

No it's not in the book and Malory's sister kills herself at home not after driving in the car.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 18:29

And in the book it isn't drawings in the briefcase, it's a notebook with lots of ramblings about the creatures

NOTthepinkranger · 04/01/2019 18:30

I personally think it’s been overhyped.

Nothisispatrick · 04/01/2019 18:34

Yes with scissors, doesn’t she? The deaths in the book were far more gory and disturbing. I left the room for the first guy in house death, the one who watches the cctv. Then I realised they weren’t going to do it how he did it in the book.
