Lilly Allen & Miquita on abortions

Sorry for the DM link - I know it's a rag.

I'm just completely disturbed having read this article and listened to their podcast episode of them talking about having 5 abortions each. This surely is not what the 1967 abortion act was designed for. It's not some preppy girl-power feminist statement to have so many abortions you can't even remember them. And to laugh and sing about it rather than take a somber view or think about how you would make better choices or advise women and girls listening to make other choices for themselves. Or to demand that contraceptive services post-abortion are better to prevent girls from having another one. Am I wrong for thinking this is messed up and completely tasteless? And antithetical to the well-being of women and girls? Am I being excessively prude and judgemental?

Sorry didn't know where else to put this & haven't made a thread before so if I have broken rules or if this just is inappropriate let me know. This has just really got under my skin.

Article link here

Their podcast is called "Miss Me" and is available on BBC sounds - it's on their episode from this week called "Listen Bitch" at the very start. I am not a regular listener to it.

Edit: sorry I meant to post this on feminism chat not S&G discussions

Lily Allen admits she 'can't remember' how many abortions she has had

Speaking on the pair's podcast, Miss Me? , the singer, 40, described her reproductive system as a 'complete disaster area', confessing she would 'get pregnant all the time'.

Disgusting. How appalling.

Orangemintcream · 02/07/2025 18:21

Lily is an attention seeker. She’s done nothing since she was 20 yet is still giving interviews etc.

Yes maybe you're right and it's a stunt. I hope it is.

I agree OP. I'm absolutely pro choice, but this feels wrong.

cramptramp · 02/07/2025 18:25

Horrible. I haven’t listened but read a headline that said Lily couldn’t remember how many abortions she’d had! Both of them are awful.

Soubriquet · 02/07/2025 18:25

I honestly don’t care. Her body, her choice.

As early as possible, as late as necessary

This is exactly what the right will use to roll back on abortion access. It's inevitable at this point.

And your criticism of irresponsible ejaculators is posted where...?

Ffs this is the feminism board. Whether you are lib feminism or radfem you've no feminist argument here.

Samas · 02/07/2025 18:27

You’re not pro choice if you believe there is a limit on the amount of abortions a woman should have.

BadIdeaRight · 02/07/2025 18:27

Haven’t listened so not a direct comment but…

I think having several abortions and being open about it and not being ‘sombre’ when discussing it is probably healthier than beating yourself up with shame and guilt and secrecy over one abortion OR continuing an unwanted pregnancy,

Obviously in an ideal nobody would ever find themselves unhappily pregnant. Women would all have instant access to good contraception. and emergency contraception. Men would take more responsibility. Nobody would ever get pissed and throw caution to the wind. But,,;it’s not an ideal world.

I have had more than one abortion. So has my sister. So has my best friend. None of us are inherently irresponsible people. None of us felt any shame or regret and certainly weren’t ‘sombre’.

Im no fan of these two wanging on about any old shite in their podcast but I don’t think they have anything to feel ashamed about either.

So don't pander to their talking points.

Lily Allen is an attention-seeker, more news as we get it.

I don’t think you you are absolutely pro choice if you think this is wrong.
what’s the issue? That she’s had 5 abortions? ( what should the limit be?) that she’s speaking about it? That she doesn’t feel bad or guilty?

Honon · 02/07/2025 18:28

Morally, no issues. I don't differentiate ethically between one abortion and a hundred.
In terms of their mental and physical health I would be a bit concerned, mentally I guess it's personal and if you're not affected it's okay. Physically I think it's better to avoid pregnancy, repeat abortion can take a toll on the body.
If it was someone I knew and cared about I'd be worried for them.

Changedforhim · 02/07/2025 18:29

I suppose it’s their choice , not something I’d broadcast but they have the legal right to make that choice as many times as they want to.

Aside from the topic they are both incredibly nasty knew them when I was younger. Really really unpleasant and quite a toxic combination when together

Women and men are not interchangeable. Women carry the burden of reproduction and the burden of irresponsible sex. Of course the men are also to blame but they are not the ones experiencing the consequences of their actions. It's not feminist to pretend that men and women are the same and an unwanted pregnancy impacts them equally surely

I am totally pro-choice so if having an abortion is the right choice for them, I am in no place to judge that.

For me it's having unprotected sex repeatedly that's worrying in terms of their sexual/physical health

Toseland · 02/07/2025 18:32

It's almost like someone pays these celebrities to come out with stories that will sway political opinion - we should stop listening to them all.

Of course the OP can post about this here. How ridiculous to say she can’t.

I suppose if someone is so chaotic they end up having 5 abortions (or don’t know how many they’ve had) it’s probably best they’re not actually having children.

But I can also see the OP’s point - and yes, you can be pro choice and still think this isn’t a great idea. Being a feminist doesn’t entail cheering on every thing a woman does.

SirChenjins · 02/07/2025 18:36

You can be pro choice and not like the way they are talking about this in such an off-hand way or being so flippant about sexual health.

Its an interesting one - I believe I am fully pro choice, therefore she can have as many abortions as she wants.

I can also judge the requirement to have so many, I mean come on - you live mainly in the UK you will have lots of information about what makes babies so isnt it just more effort to remove one than stop one?

Thats my judgey pants on though.

I will still stand beside her and fight for her right to have as many more as she needs or wants

TomatoSandwiches · 02/07/2025 18:37

Well shes right, not wanting a baby at the time is perfectly reasonable, this is her body, she can do what she wants with it, why does she need to act shameful about it?

Yeah maybe I am just being judgemental. Imo five is a habit at that point. She could have prevented most of them I am sure and I suppose I am judgemental of the fact that she didn't do so. I don't think abortions are morally neutral I guess. Maybe I'm only pro choice to a certain extent and not as feminist as I thought. Thanks for the input everyone

A - I wouldn't read the Daily Mail if you paid me. They love nothing more than to whip up hate for women and, Oh look! Shocker.

B - Whilst Miquita was very open about the number of abortions she has had, Lily was more cautious, I thought, and I took the 'I can't remember' as a bit of a joke and that she settled on 5 in the end as a bit of an act of solidarity, I thought.

At the end of the day, this is a podcast of 2 mates chatting about life and certain topics and I do find it refreshing that they are so honest. I listen every week and the both of them are very frank about their lives.

There shouldn't be shame around abortion and they did also discuss all methods of contraception in the episode. They in no way encourage people to flippantly abort.

I dare say the way the Mail has spun it was that they were fully encouraging women to do so but, well, as ever, fuck them!

You're all ready to jump on the misogyny when discussing trans issues but look at the comments here, shaming women for having abortions!
