Lilly Allen & Miquita on abortions

Sorry for the DM link - I know it's a rag.

I'm just completely disturbed having read this article and listened to their podcast episode of them talking about having 5 abortions each. This surely is not what the 1967 abortion act was designed for. It's not some preppy girl-power feminist statement to have so many abortions you can't even remember them. And to laugh and sing about it rather than take a somber view or think about how you would make better choices or advise women and girls listening to make other choices for themselves. Or to demand that contraceptive services post-abortion are better to prevent girls from having another one. Am I wrong for thinking this is messed up and completely tasteless? And antithetical to the well-being of women and girls? Am I being excessively prude and judgemental?

Sorry didn't know where else to put this & haven't made a thread before so if I have broken rules or if this just is inappropriate let me know. This has just really got under my skin.

Article link here

Their podcast is called "Miss Me" and is available on BBC sounds - it's on their episode from this week called "Listen Bitch" at the very start. I am not a regular listener to it.

Edit: sorry I meant to post this on feminism chat not S&G discussions

Lily Allen admits she 'can't remember' how many abortions she has had

Speaking on the pair's podcast, Miss Me? , the singer, 40, described her reproductive system as a 'complete disaster area', confessing she would 'get pregnant all the time'.

What utter shite. Unless a woman is raped, it is both the woman and the man's responsibility!

If this is feminism, I want no part in it.

Hear, hear. Victims aside, women have free will.

Don't worry about the NHS, I imagine they were done privately

Maybe for her, but on here the "I can have as many abortions as I want, as often as I want, for whatever reason I choose" attitude, suggests the cost to the NHS is substantial. In an age when contraception is widely available to men and women, and sex education has been on the curriculum of schools for decades, this cavalier entitlement to exploit NHS funds is pretty staggering.

The majority of early abortions will be via tablet, which I don’t suppose is much more costly than providing free contraceptives, if at all. And is a whole lot less than antenatal/labour/postnatal care would cost.

SirChenjins · 04/07/2025 11:44

Yes, the majority of early abortions are carried out via tablet. Around 4 in every 100 need further intervention which can include surgery. This obviously pushes costs up. From a v quick google search (there will be more up to date figures out there I'm sure) NHS England alone spent £96 million on abortions in 2018.The number of abortions has risen so that amount is likely to be higher.

From the Pharmacy Journal - The decrease in contraceptive device prescribing in 2020/2021 coincides with a 23% decline in the cost of prescribing contraceptives that are not devices, such as the contraceptive injection and the pill from £99,932,659 in 2019/2020 to £76,837,997 in 2020/2021.

As I said, a v quick search, there will be other figures. However, remember that far more women will be using contraception that are having multiple abortions - but yes, the cost of both will be less than antenatal and postnatal care and maternity services.

Shame she can't abort the stuff she says.

No but there is teary and upset and then there is cavalier.

I feel the same abiut miscarriages. I have had them and wasn’t teary or upset. But that doesn’t mean I don’t understand how serious they are.

Nor do I understand women who are cavalier about abortion but devastated by a miscarriage.

Exactly and this what Lily Allen did, was devastated by her miscarriage and sings and laughs her head off at her abortions. I don’t understand this mindset.

Because she wanted the pregnancies she lost, I assume. Not hard to get one’s head around.

Well if you’re like her and get rid of puppies on a whim like it’s a disposable commodity I guess so. Many people don’t think like she does and that’s ok, good even.

Actually many women distinguish between miscarriages and abortion.

JHound · 09/07/2025 15:21

There will never be an argument anybody can make that makes me think another woman’s womb is my business.

It does sound weird to me that she seems so hopeless with contraception (and I personally suspect she is not being truthful) but I would rather a woman have 20 abortions than any woman be forced to carry a child to term against her will.
