Very motivating to read.

9st 12.4 today, 0.4 loss,
happy with that. Even 0.2 loss is good as I've not gone far to go.

Keep it up everyone, it's so good to try and get as much off in the early stages.

I eeked it out for far too long and wish I'd just focused but tbh it was mainly damage limitation to stop me escalating up as I was on an eat everything path! Over christmas away from work it was easier to control amd have time to properly plan. Anyway back to work...

Closing at 850 and 60g carbs. Also did a decent walk.
i think will take at least a week to loose my Xmas and new year weight! I did not damage limit at all!

well done for all the losses!

MistySkiesAreGone · 04/01/2023 17:41

Closed at 1000 cals. Had an Omelette, pea soup and chicken stirfry. Extra cals in brown rice so carb is 75g today. We'll see what the scales say tomorrow.

803 calories yesterday, and down another 0.25kg this morning. At this rate I’ll be under 60kg this weekend!

Looking ahead, for those who are onto the 5:2 part, how much do you eat on non fast days? The book says unrestricted but sensible, but the suggestions in the cookbook for non fast days sound very abstemious. It’s hard to imagine it adding up to double the calories, let alone 2000. After 800 calories 1600 still sounds very indulgent, but I’m just wondering what I should be aiming for.

Tunneltiger · 05/01/2023 09:11

Well done Bear, I also had a 0.6lb trickle this morning. I know the first week is lots of water but I still find it so motivating. Yesterday I was totally knackered and poor dog went on frustratingly slow shuffly walk. Last night tried a Nigel Slater recipe of sauerkraut and cheese fritters which sounded so horrible it had to be nice and it was. Today am going with cottage cheese Waldorf for lunch and Broccoli and stilton soup for dinner. Have a fridge full of leftover cheeseboard so trying to use it without resorting to bread or crackers. Any ideas for leftover brie?
Good luck today everyone. Love reading the thread.

I think it has to be more than you need to maintain but not so much it can't be lost on the fast days....maybe trial and error.

Brie on cucumber minus crackers? A side of blueberries?

@MistySkiesAreGone Thanks - I think I’ll feel safer counting calories to start with so will have a play around with it.

@Tunneltiger Lol at your “sounded so horrible it had to be nice” supper!

MistySkiesAreGone · 05/01/2023 10:23

Back up today to 12st 13.4, but I had 3 veggie sausages as was up working late until 3am. Not too worried as I will lose it this weekend.

Had my green smoothies breakfast again, love it as feels so clean. Not sure I want to go back to porridge and that was my staple for about 20 years! I think that may have not helped, eating so much carb first thing before metabolism has kicked in.

Morning, I have not weighed yet as I am just easing myself into the diet without any pressure. I am finding the 16:8 window easy enough but do feel i will need to get some more fruit and veg into the meals.

I have so far gone with eggs and a little sourdough with some protein chucked in for meal 1 and eaten a small portion of the family meal for 2 cutting out white rice etc.

DD's birthday today so I know I will have a higher cal day but still going to srick to the 8 hour window.

PhoenixMama · 05/01/2023 11:51

Morning all - terrible headache and tiredness here - really hoping it passes soon.

Closed the kitchen yesterday at 834cls and 27g of carbs, 88 g of protein. This makes the fact that I'm up 0.4lb annoying but I'm due my period today so that's probably what that is - I can fluctuate by up to 5lbs so I guess I'm lucky with that lol. Keto stick between trace & light today so going in the right direction.

@QuiltedBear I found the transition onto 5:2 really hard when I did it and my weight was all over the place. In the Keto book they recommend going onto 3:4 first for at least 4 weeks - but the biggest change is he says you need to do the days back to back, rather than spread them out. I definitely think its a bit of trial and error! Exciting that you're nearly there!

@Tunneltiger I love brie in a frittata, especially if I caramelise the onions first!

Today's meals are Spring Green Frittata with goats cheese and meatballs with mozzarella - actually starving already so looking forward to lunch!

QuiltedBear · 05/01/2023 12:37

@PhoenixMama Thank you - that’s very interesting. Do you think the Fast 800 Keto is worth a read even if I don’t want to go super low carb? And how are you finding it compared to the vanilla Fast 800?

My plan is to do two weeks of 800 calories a day and then switch to 5:2. My period is due late next week so I may not make it though - I can imagine myself struggling on 800 calories at that point.

That said, I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far (only on day 6, mins) with how easy this is to stick to. I do feel hungry, but I haven’t felt weak/shaky/headachey/sick since day 1.

PhoenixMama · 05/01/2023 12:48

@QuiltedBear How much do you want to lose/have you lost?

QuiltedBear · 05/01/2023 13:04

@PhoenixMama Nutra check suggested 10% of my body weight (I think it suggests that to everyone as an initial goal). So I started at 63kg and want to get down to 57kg. (9 stone 9 pounds down to 8 stone 10 pounds I think…)

That was my booking weight back in 2017 so I’d be happy with that. If I feel I have more to lose when I get there I can always reconsider.

Current loss is 2.8kg or 6 pounds.

PhoenixMama · 05/01/2023 13:25

@QuiltedBear So I can give you my experience doing both - back in 2019 I lost 50lbs on the normal Fast 800 but it took around 18 weeks.

You want to lose 6kg so it's unlikely you'll lose that in 2 weeks (especially as you don't have loads to lose). I think if you move to 5:2 after 2 weeks you might be disappointed in how your losses slow right down. 5:2 is really for maintenance so personally, I'd lose the weight first and then change over. Loss on 5:2 usually maxes out at around 1lb a week - or maybe you could do the new suggested 3:4? As you get closer to your goal it really slows down anyway. My thing is I find the bigger losses (2lbs+ a week) more motivating - I lose all motivation when it's literally ounces a day, if that doesn't bother you then maybe you'll be fine?

What I will say on the Keto one so far is that I don't ever feel hungry (which I know is the protein rather than low carbs) so that's positive and I'm surprised at how easy it is to actually do low carb/low cal like this and not be miserable (headache aside, I had the keto flu for almost a week on the regular Fast800) AND I can eat up to 1000 cals (as long as I'm under 50g carb) and not impact my losses which makes me feel like it's a LOT more sustainable longer term.

I liked reading the new book because I think my brain goes 'oh this is new so we can follow it' rather than 'we've done this before I don't want to do it again' but the premise is essentially this:

  • Under 50g carbs
  • Over 50g protein (I think the exact calculation is 0.75-1g protein per kg)
  • Cals between 800 - 1000
  • No more than 3 weeks at that Keto level
  • Then 3:4 for as long as you want/till you reach your goal
  • Then maintenance between that and 5:2.

Hope that helps!

QuiltedBear · 05/01/2023 13:35

@PhoenixMama Ah, I think I may have misinterpreted the plan. I thought it was Fast 800 for an initial surge, 5:2 for slower sustained weight loss, and then “the way of life” (low carb Mediterranean diet) for maintenance.

The last time I lost weight (many many years ago) I was calorie counting, and lost at a rate of 0.5-1 pound a week, so I think I can live with that again. I assumed things would slow down soon, once the initial water losses are out of the way.

This is my first time low carbing. It’s going great but I’m not sure I could cope with ketosis and keto flu lol.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge - it is really helpful and appreciated.

MistySkiesAreGone · 05/01/2023 15:26

@QuiltedBear I find it hard to reach fibre intake on low carb but aim for about 50-60% of RDA.

OP posts:
MistySkiesAreGone · 05/01/2023 15:28

@PhoenixMama I hardly lose any weight in the days before my period - lots of water retention. I write off 5 days a month when I'm planning how long it takes to reach the goal!
