Has anyone got a good curry recipe from scratch rather then me using usual bought sauce?

itsmymess · 21/08/2020 17:32

I'm still struggling to get my head around it all in spite of having read the book - low carb or low cal or both.
Trying not to eat in the morning as my dinner is usually around 7.30pm and can't bring that forward.

Do you think I can use slim fast shake as a meal replacement when out?

aceofbase1 · 21/08/2020 18:13

Yes definitely @itsmymess it says in the book to do that when you're on the go. My protein website sells a Keto friendly shake, I bought it once and it was quite nice.

So I've just started my fast and I've gone over by 100 calories today ooops Sad it was the halloumi that caused it (I should have just had a couple less slices) it was so nice though

I got a Pyrex dish and filled it with Chunky pieces of red onion, garlic cloves, red pepper chopped, mushrooms, tomatoes and halloumi slices on top, sprinkled with olive oil and salt and pepper and some paprika and baked in the oven for 30 minutes at 200 degrees. It was so so tasty!

outwest · 21/08/2020 18:22

outwest outside of the fast800 what are you’re thoughts about the importance of calories on a low carb diet?

Agnostic to be honest. Can understand Jason Fung's dislike of way it is used/misused, but practically speaking calories is the most widely available category of information, and people will gravitate to what they can easily measure.

Also, in short term at least calorific restriction (combined with avoidance of starchy carbs) works as a way of getting to decent body weight.

Focus on cals has worked for me, but work from home, always cook own meals from scratch, male, not drinking alcohol, so may not be as effective for others in less ideal circumstances.

itsmymess · 21/08/2020 18:33

Re calories I'm finding it hard to adapt to the idea of using oil when old diets I've done tell me oil is so bad and calorific. Same with 🥑

Monstermissy36 · 21/08/2020 20:08

Tonight I had a curry with cauliflower rice and it was blooming lovely! I've lost 10 pounds in about a month and am really pleased with my progress.

However... I'm craving dessert and something sweet, any ideas what I can have without ruining everything? I am concerned if I ignore this I'll end up knee deep in dominos, cream cakes and chocolate by end of the week!

Help!!

TantricTwist · 21/08/2020 20:15

@Monstermissy36 I have berries with greek yoghurt and I do add a bit of sweetener sometimes. Also a nice cold crisp apple is delicious or a few grapes hits the sweet spot for me esp if I've gone a few days without.

TantricTwist · 21/08/2020 20:16

I have approx 60 gm of berries and 80 gm of greek yoghurt which seems like a decent portion for me.

1questionshootout · 21/08/2020 20:17

I had curry and cauliflower rice too! It was the Indian spiced prawn dish from the BSD book, even DH thought they were amazing!

Pudding wise, I made a lovely treat this week-Greek yoghurt mixed with a good shake of ginger and cinnamon, with a teaspoon of cocoa nibs. Satsuma segments to dip in.

Monstermissy36 · 21/08/2020 20:19

I have been having berries and Greek yogurt and it's normal perfect for evening.. took it to work for lunch today tho and so now I'm back at wanting something sweet! I will have berries and yogurt again and not take it to work next week!

I'm trying to keep under 50g carbs a day which is working well so far!

Just need to stop dreaming about dominos now 😂

outwest · 21/08/2020 22:07

Interesting. What sort of berries do people eat? Blueberries? Frozen or fresh?

Jollyholibobs · 21/08/2020 23:05

Frozen blueberries are what I have for berries with yoghurt. Frozen are more economical I think if you only want a few each day as fresh will go off. It also avoids the pressure to eat more than you want to avoid them going off and wasting. I give them a very short defrost in the microwave to defrost them.

Flibbertyjibbit · 21/08/2020 23:39

Had a very big oops moment tonight, after a crazy busy 48 hours, DH and I collapsed on the sofa, both too tired to cook. Ordered an Indian but instead of our usual order we went for butter paneer and mixed tandoori meat starter with poppadom on the side. No rice, no bhaji and only 1 small main and starter between 2 of us. Having only eaten an apple & coffee at lunch I was very happy to have anything. Wondering if my stomach is getting used to the smaller amounts as normally we'd have had rice, naan, 2 mains, starters etc. I know it's not on plan at all but hoping our choices won't set us back too far.

Tomorrow is a new day! Well done on the losses everyone.

Patchworksack · 22/08/2020 07:40

It was obviously curry night last night. We had a homemade one (cheated with curry paste) with cauli rice.

Miffytastic · 22/08/2020 08:31

Love a curry :) got the whole family into eating vegan homemade dishes this year but the kids particularly like coconut milk ones and all the trimmings which doesn’t help weight loss.

Berries: frozen raspberries from Lidl or Tesco are my staple. They defrost overnight in my oat/chia/protein smoothie bowl thing I have, and can be zapped or left out for pudding snacks.

I sneaked a look at the scales yesterday and was amazed to see I’ve lost 2lbs in the week, having expected to see some gain/no change due doing 4:3 last week. (But the non f800 days weren’t that Mediterranean). Going to weigh again today to keep me on track for the weekend.

Oysterbabe · 22/08/2020 08:38

I love a curry. The kids do too so I always make one a week. I'm happy with cauli rice and cook proper rice for them. I'm always on the look out for meals I can make for everyone, I don't really want them to clock that I'm eating differently or know what dieting is until they are much older.

Oysterbabe · 22/08/2020 08:39

I'm staying at MIL's tonight so will be off track this weekend. She always plans and prepares all the meals so I'll just eat them but be sensible on portions and avoid all the cakes and biscuits.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/08/2020 08:44

So we watched MM’s 21 day program last night. Enjoyed it a lot. Hopefully that will inspire lots of people to try low carb. My DP has lost half a stone now and he’s BMI is now 23. something. Which brings me to a new headache, how the hell does he stay ketogenic for the health benefits and yet not for the weight loss. He was never that overweight so he can really only afford to lose another 7lb at the most.

Off the top of my head I’ve said to him that he should eat three meals a day at weekends and I could add starchy vegetables to his meals. Any other ideas to maintain whilst still following the Keto principles?

outwest · 22/08/2020 08:56

Any other ideas to maintain whilst still following the Keto principles?

Feel lower carbs should be means to an end (better health) not end in itself. If focus on keto results in unwanted / risky weight loss + potentially worse health, then surely not right approach. Has to be balance. We all need some carbs^, right? Issue is how many.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/08/2020 09:04

And which carbs surely?

Miffytastic · 22/08/2020 09:09

I didn’t think you were meant to stay in ketosis for ever? Isn’t low carb a good idea for low insulin levels etc but you can keep calories up by eating high quality carbs like rye bread and oats text and high protein foods plus the Mediterranean diet principles. There’s a maintenance section in the
F800 book but I’ve not studied it properly

itsmymess · 22/08/2020 09:34

Where do citrus fruits fit in this way of eating? I know sweet fruits like peaches etc are not well advised

aceofbase1 · 22/08/2020 12:10

I wondered that @itsmymess I really love fruit normally

So I'm up to 18 hours if my fast at the moment! Wasn't intentional but realised I'm at the hairdressers today and woke up got ready and left so no time for food and my fast was supposed to end whilst I'm here. I think it will be another 2 hours before I can eat which will give me a 20 hour fast!?! I did have a coffee with soya milk before I left so that's something.

Just hoping I don't get shaky like yesterday! Confused

I think I'll break my fast with the shakshuka which I've not tried yet.

This evening I'm having a Thai dish with some of those slim noodles that have no carbs and low calorie - hoping they taste ok!

I've walked a mile at quite a fast pace this morning so I'm pleased! I've managed to walk everyday since I've started and before I was a complete couch potato!

Oysterbabe · 22/08/2020 12:24

It was the first time I made Shakshuka yesterday and it was so, so good. Definitely going to be a regular thing here.

Let us know what you think of the slim noodles. Tbh I think they are horrible.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/08/2020 12:29

Miffy the crazy thing is I don’t know!
I’ve researched this WOE do much and yet hardly anyone talks about maintenance!!!!!
