Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Thread 20!! Wow sets bear!!
@Bestbees please don’t give up! 3 pounds isn’t sooo bad! What’s your goal weight? If you are truly fed up why not try to maintain around 10st so be happy with 2 pounds either way. But give yourself a bit of a break. I really appreciated my 3 months of 11st maintaining. I did wright daily so it didn’t go crazy over. But I didn’t calorie count. I ate mostly BSD but will have had wine / GTs and probs some choc & biscuits knowing me but not silly. It may just help for a bit? Xx

Cocobox · 26/06/2020 10:54

Blimey, that filled up fast! Thanks thenewaveragebear1983.

collywobble · 26/06/2020 11:53

Thank you for the new thread @newaveragebear . I'm still stuck in fact the scales have gone up to 11-10 which I'm hoping is still fluid retention due to the heat .
Lunch is a fast800 shake which I love as they keep me fuller for longer and then dinner is chicken tikka skewers with a salad .
I was hoping for a g&t at the weekend but with the weight still not shifting I don't want to risk more gains so will persevere with sparking water . I expected to see 11-8 this week but my body isn't playing ball. I did an extra Hiit workout for menopausal women this morning to see if that would boost things and I must admit I'm starving now and watching the clock until my eating window opens. There is also the most amazing looking Guinness and chocolate cake in the fridge calling to me left over from Father's Day so I feel like I deserve at least a pound off for avoiding that!

PhoenixMama · 26/06/2020 12:48

Hi all! Got a crazy busy day of non-stop Zooms which are making me lose the will to live! Most likely pizza tonight so hoping to keep the rest of the day as low carb as possible! I'm retaining as much water as a paddling pool right now so, although I'm not looking forward to the rain I am looking forward to the retention stopping!

Bestbees · 26/06/2020 15:32

Thanks bear for the new thread. I don't tend to retain a lot of water, and know it is all the food I have eaten, but i am going to pretend it is bloat, eat sensibly and either way it will go!
@Kimlek thank you. That has given me a little boost. My dream is 9.7 but I would be happy with 9.10. it's so frustrating as I seem to get below ten and then my body screams for me to eat! I suspect it is to do with set weight as 9.13-10.3 has been my weigh most of my adult life. I have been thinner when my husband was very ill (9.2) and with a brief bit of 5:2 I have been 9.7. but I think my body likes that point!

Itshotoday · 26/06/2020 19:57

Colly wobble how are you finding the fast shakes? I found them grainy when I added with water when they first came out - some time ago now! 🤢

collywobble · 26/06/2020 20:42

@itshottoday I really like them. I prefer the vanilla one . I don't have to think too much about lunch planning calories. I blend them with almond milk in my smoothie maker which might help. They do really seem to suppress my appetite.

Justasecondnow · 26/06/2020 23:17

Hello, missed you all yesterday! Managed to stay on for 800 odd cals and carbs below 50. And this morning I’m down a 1lb from last week = 10.2 (was so close to 10.1 - like 2oz!) So that’s 13lb in 6 weeks.

I’m pleased I lost after losing the plot a bit last weekend. Pulling it back was an effort tho and I felt tired and hungry and generally pissed off last two days! Bet I’ve been a delight to live with. So I’m officially done w/ 800 cals 7 days a week ( not that I ever managed that anyway!) and I’m upping to 1200 on fri, sat and sun. For the sake of my loved ones!

Today I had left over thai turkey mince salad with 2 fried eggs, salmon, broccoli and white bean mash. Tea for milk and a tiny green and blacks chocolate bar. Comes out about 1250 cals. I confess I’m not sure on carbs and can’t be bothered totting up. Meals all from BSD book so hopefully not too bad Actually enjoyed my chocolate and whilst the impulse to eat more was there I batted it off. Just got to flex that rarely used self control muscle around chocolate I guess!

Hope everyone’s had a good Friday.

Bluebiddy · 26/06/2020 23:29

Hi, I'm brand new to this. What are the shakes made from? Are there recipes?
I'm hoping to start tomorrow & I need a kick up the arse start & I have about a stone to lose

Kimlek · 27/06/2020 00:13

@Justasecondnow thai turkey mince salad? Which recipe book is that in please? I’ve the original little paperback BSD book with recipes in the back; the BSD recipe book and the Fast800 recipe book but don’t recall Thai salad. Sounds yum!!!
Welcome @bluebiddy you can buy BSD/fast800 shakes. I’ve never tried them but a couple of people on here do. There’s a few shake/smoothie recipes in the Fast800 recipe book, but again, I’ve never tried them. And bear makes her own fabulous sounding concoction.
We had socially distanced drinks tonight. I took my nosecco over but ended up having several glasses of rose. Really enjoyed it!! But will be well over in cals and carbs now. 🙄

Kimlek · 27/06/2020 00:17

OMG I’m bang in 800 & 27 carbs including the wine. I’m sure I must have forgotten to count something!

Bestbees · 27/06/2020 07:41

Morning.
Down half a pound and feeling much better (period finally started!)

@justasecondnow Thai turkey salad sounds amazing, would love a point to the recipe. Well done for pulling it back, that's what I need to do now. I like the idea of upping at the weekends, I thjnk that will really help me.
Welcome @Bluebiddy. I would read the first post on this thread, and one of the Michael Mosley books to start. But it is pretty simple really. Eat 800 cals a day a posing bread, flour, pasta, potatoes and rice as well as processed.food and sugary items. Try to get a good fasting window in. Some people use shakes, but there is no need, you could just find an easy meal to repeat for lunch every day if it helps eg two boiled eggs and some veg sticks. Drink tonnes of water. Good luck! Do you have goals you would like to share?

How is everyone else?

Plan today is Baba ganoush for lunch, with veg sticks and an egg
Dinner Quorn bolag with green veg.
This evening I am having cocktails with friends so just won't count those and then back on the train tomorrow!

fufulina · 27/06/2020 08:01

👋 lovely fast moving thread still, love the positivity.

Down 1.2kg so far this week (since Monday) and BMI now 27. The heat is not my friend. Was exhausted yesterday. Not sleeping well (we sleep in a converted loft at the top of the house = small oven).

In non scale news clothes fitting well. Even bought some new clothes! Rather previous given I still have 13kg to go, but I fancied rewarding myself with something other than cake! The big July kicks in next weekend. The challenge will be to remain focused and mindful and not fall headfirst into bread and gin. I’m feeling positive though. 9 weeks on plan (will be almost 10 by then), it’s a good opportunity to test real life!

Onwards and downwards. Have lovely weekends everyone Smile

fufulina · 27/06/2020 08:02

Lies! This is week 8, will be 9 next weekend.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2020 08:20

Weighed in at 10.10.4, I actually can't remember if that's a gain or not but I reckon it probably is. I need a kick up the bum really, I know what I need to do but I just don't do it! Had a couple of g&t last night and didn't really snack but my dinner was HUGE. As dh cooked. I'm due on in 4 days and just generally feeling bloated and horrible.

I realised last night that it is 7 weeks today until we go on holiday so that seems like a good target. 2lbs a week = a stone off in 7 weeks? I reckon that's doable but I do need to actually stick to the plan! Feeling motivated actually although annoyingly we have our first social event since March tonight with friends coming over for drinks (is it wrong that I hope it rains?!) so will be drinking tonight. But not wine. I am so sick of red wine after these last few months.

Today: I'm heading out for a long run, hoping for 10 miles but it depends how I feel once I'm out. Lunch will be egg mayo and salad, and dinner will be chicken stuffed with sundried tomato, olives, basil and feta.

Entirely possible to have a really good day on plan today! I'm channelling my positive mental attitude. I can and I will. Grin

Addendum to my post:

10.10.4 is a gain of about a pound
My social tonight has cancelled and I actually feel quite happy about this as I can not drink now!

I joined the online Fast 800 programme last night - I am 67kg and only 5 ft 2 and have been counting calories and exercising for 4-5 weeks and lost nothing. I think my body is very stubbornly stuck at this weight.
I am getting married in August and I don’t want to be overweight anymore. I need to lose 7 kilos to be back in a healthy range and then another few to be back where I always was at BMI 22/23.
I am scared of being hungry Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2020 09:19

@Plancina welcome. I don't lie, you might be hungry....but It does pass quite quickly and it's easier if you cut the carbs right back as far as possible. You could try doing a week of low carb but not calorie counting, just to get through the detox, and then begin cutting the calories as well?

OP posts:
Kimlek · 27/06/2020 09:23

Yeah bestbees and fufulina 🥳
I love babaganoush - are you making it?
I’m 10.6.8 this morning but don’t look it! Perimenopausal haven’t had a period for a couple of months but blooming need to!!
Will walk the dog 5k today as per usual. Not too sure re food plan today. Need to check fridge expiry dates and weather as was thinking BBQs this weekend. Currently a little drizzly albeit warm.

Justasecondnow · 27/06/2020 09:25

Oops sorry - that recipe was actually one someone posted on here - a hairy bikers one - here’s a link:

books.google.co.uk/books?id=izRADwAAQBAJ&pg=PT65&lpg=PT65&dq=hairy+bikers+thai+turkey+mince+salad&source=bl&ots=fldVaI2loN&sig=ACfU3U2Z4YVFGlU1-SdyOqxN201_sUo0Ng&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjtqM3Lj5HqAhWyuXEKHS_HAvcQ6AEwBHoECAcQAQ#v=onepage&q=hairy%20bikers%20thai%20turkey%20mince%20salad&f=false

Sorry it’s a mega long link. I hope it works. If not let me know and I’ll screen shot it.

It was really nice!

And yeah I feel really happy officially having upped. I was eating about that (if not more!) at the weekends anyway but in a haphazard way. Feel more in control now. 800 cals any length of time is hard core. All credit to those who cope but I just hit a wall with it I think.

Looks like everyone is feeling good and motivated today. Me too. Go us! Grin

Plancina · 27/06/2020 09:30

I’m planning to try and stick to 800 cals plan for 2 weeks, following the meal plans I’ve been given and then move to 5:2 if I can’t stick it, or see if I can manage another 2 weeks. Psychologically it seems important to me to say it’s only two weeks Grin
I have heard a lot of stuff about yo yo dieting and how it ruins your metabolism and I’m not sure I fully understand how this is different but I trust Dr MM so Smile
