Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Af came. That’s my excuse for the binge yest I couldn’t control!!
Sticking to plan today and should be on 820 and 20 carbs (had an extra coffee)!

Yes I have plain Greek yoghurt

bluepixie · 17/03/2020 18:38

Kitchen closed 820 and 20 carbs
Similar day planned tmrw
Was harder today after 4 days of ridicolous binge eating!
Won’t weigh tmtw as wilL prob still cry! And also period here and always more bloated then
Hope u all had good days x

CiorstanMI · 17/03/2020 19:32

Day 9 and kitchen closed at 832 calories and 44g carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/03/2020 22:11

I didn't count cals today but I ate really well, small portion of cauliflower cheese for lunch with broth, then dinner was chicken salad, with a vegan sausage on the side and yoghurt with berries. 13k steps and a short run (5.5k)

I feel knackered. I have a gravelly throat and a headache, not sure whether they are key symptoms or not and I'm just feeling quite anxious and exhausted by the whole situation.

Tomorrow: I'm at work so I usually have a nice latte for my lunch! Dinner tomorrow will be a chicken curry with veggies.

I'm down to 10.3.5 today so back to fighting weight. 10.3 is just the 'scales are stuck' weight though, I always seem to end up here! I will continue with my plan to have 800 today. I'm due on in 3 days so normally I'd be bloated and craving sugar, but I actually feel quite focussed.

Have a good day everyone!

bluepixie · 18/03/2020 07:43

Not weighed today either but will do once af done
Feeling very focussed though!

CiorstanMI · 18/03/2020 19:44

Day 9 and closing the kitchen at 797 calories and 50 carbs. Made a veggie sausage casserole this evening which was quite successful. I basically used my usual recipe but missed out the potatoes.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/03/2020 20:16

I basically forgot to eat today because I was dealing with one thing then another. Had a bowl of broth at about 11. Just had pork steak with bbq sauce and cheese, with salad (which was yummy except it went cold while I was watching the cv update and I couldn't be bothered to separate the salad and microwave the pork!) then I just had a bowl of frozen fruit and alpro.

I'm just about to sit down with Dh and have a firm talk about social distancing because he is still going out to work and going to clients houses and now school and college are Closed I think he should stay and work from home also. He is not taking it very seriously and I am getting really anxious now. Anyway, upshot is: we are having a glass of wine tonight!

I hope everyone is ok and that the school closures will not be too catastrophic to your family. Keep safe and healthy DaffodilThanksStar

Closing up 850 and 30 carbs. Had a nice omlete for dinner tonight.

Been a stressful day and not cooked for tmrw lunch to take into work so taking in a bean ready meal which looks all healthy but has lentils and chicken peas etc so is high carb :/ should still be in less than 50 if I’m careful..

Hope your hubby listened - it’s really important to stay safe atm! Enjoy ur wine

Well done @CiorstanMI your doing great :)

RubbishSwimmer · 18/03/2020 23:41

Day 9 for me today (I think, losing track a little).

I’m still keeping on it. Now fully WFH so am a tad worried that I’ll overeat due to proximity to food. I can happily go all day in the office without eating, but seeing food tends to make me hungry.

I could make healthy choices I know. Or I could just eat aalllllllll the bread.

CiorstanMI · 19/03/2020 07:43

Thanks @Cream123. I'm amazed it seems to be going so smoothly but it looks like we're all doing rather well this week I think.

I'm finding it enormously helpful to report my cals/carbs on here every evening (clearly I'm very vain because the wish not to fail miserably in front of everyone else seems to be a big motivator for me! Grin) and the support from everyone else is brilliant.

bluepixie · 19/03/2020 09:18

Yes me too! If I ever drop off
It means I’m eating the biscuit tin!!
Just had my yoghurt with a few raspberries....
Will weigh myself tmrw not weighed since Sunday as didn’t want to cry! I’m going to use this staying out of pubs and restaurants as a good excuse to cook new foods etc
Maybe we can share some recipes a bit more and try new things out!

Kimlek · 19/03/2020 10:49

This morning I’m down to 10.12.6!!!
Not sure when I last posted. I went to the event with my DD at the weekend and whilst I did brilliantly with my low cal/carb picnic I ended up staying over two nights and drinking a stupid amount of fizz/wine/G&T’s... anything really!! Returned home feeling huge and indeed gained several pounds. Monday was strict and fasted til dinner; Tuesday fasted til lunch & yesterday fasted til dinner. I did brisk dog walks all days plus an hour of tennis twice. I did have a cupcake last night and several glasses of red as feeling quite anxious about the whole CV business. My DH has gone into work (London) yet again. I’ve developed a tickly cough and sore throat but no temp. I’m not risking giving it to others so not going to tennis today & a dog walker employed. I always bump into lots of folk. I’ll fast til lunch and have some eggs, kale, toms & seeds. For dinner I’ll do a beef stir fry. I don’t feel ill but fancy a chilled restful day so will do exactly that!! Stay well everyone!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/03/2020 10:59

@Kimlek me too, I have a gritty throat and keep clearing my throat, not coughing exactly. I am very worried about all this, and have decided that as of today at 3pm I'm staying in with my kids even though we technically don't have it the symptoms.

My sister and her dd have it or so they believe, and we saw them last Monday (so 11 days ago) which is further influencing my decision.

I should be ok for BSD food really, I have shopped quite normally and did manage to get in before the shelves were decimated so have meat/frozen veg/tinned fish/eggs etc.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 19/03/2020 14:47

Well done kimlek that’s amazing!!!!

Hope ur both ok and it’s just a tickle not a cough!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/03/2020 19:22

Thoroughly weird day right? Picked up my kids from school for potentially the last time til September. I feel so sad.

My appetite has completely disappeared though, I barely ate today: cheese as a bite to tide me over, then forgot to actually eat! Had a tuna mayo salad at lunch and dinner was a fish portion and more salad. I'm trying to use up my fresh veg etc first. Not sure of calories but reckon carbs were v low. 14k steps, no run.

Tomorrow: I'm staying in. We're not isolating but we are massively restricting outside contact now I'm not working. I just want to keep us indoors/garden for the time being. Fairly certain my throat is not cv and no other symptoms to suggest it is so I am channelling positive vibes from tomorrow! I will go for a short run at some point, and will take the children out for a walk as well during the day, probably to the woods.

Food: lunch, maybe egg or salad; dinner, we have a steak for me and Dh and I will batch cook something with a pack of mince I have to try and make a meal of meatballs for the kids and a chilli for Saturday.

One thing I have bought is lots of those Coleman's/Schwartz sachets, various different ones. They aren't great BSD wise as have a bit of sugar and starch in but I figured convenience and variety would win out.

Hope you are all ok?

Day 11 and closing the kitchen at 837 calories and 43g carbs.

Our village is organising volunteers to offer help to people who need it during the pandemic. The village has been divided into clusters so I was out this evening with a couple of other volunteers leafleting all the houses in our cluster so everyone has our contact details. Really heartening to see how many people are keen to help.

bluepixie · 20/03/2020 07:38

That’s really lovely ciorstan

I went over yest 951 and 62 carbs not tragic!m I suppose I was craving a halo top which is full of sweetness but better than raising biscuit tin.
Will be super good today and weigh tmrw as not weighed all week which is not like me!

bluepixie · 20/03/2020 07:39

Apologies re spelling think u get wot I mean!

bluepixie · 20/03/2020 07:45

Forgot my milk intake yest. So actually 1000 cals. Oh dear!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/03/2020 07:50

I'm down to 10.1.8 this morning, so pleased with that.

I agree @CiorstanMI it is so heartening to see how people have rallied together. I am chair of our PTA and yesterday we gave £600 to the school to help the emergency provision for key workers kids, plus this morning I'm going round to do a massive food drive from school parents for the food bank. Everyone is being so kind.

I'm hoping to get out for a run today and food is all planned so should be a good BSD day. Probably wine tonight though!

This is al making us loose all weigh that’s for sure!!

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983. Have you got a goal weight

So far had yoghurt and nuts
Greek salad home made
Dinner chicken and veg stir fry
Will be on 800 and 25 carbs
Will weigh tmrw hope it’s moved!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/03/2020 16:10

@Cream123 my absolutely perfect goal weight would be about 9.7 however I don't know how achievable that is now I'm muscular. I would be very skinny at that weight I think. It's just because that's what I remember being when I was young and gorgeous, not based on any health factors! Anything 9 would be great, but it would need to stay there, not just dip in occasionally, so I reckon 9.12 ish (would give me occasional leeway!)

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/03/2020 16:14

And I agree that rationing could help us a bit! I've just made a double batch of bolognese/chilli with the meat I'd normally use for one batch and bulked out with mushrooms. It will do
Chilli for Dh and I tonight and 2 portions to freeze, plus bolognese for 3 kids tonight and 3 to freeze.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 20/03/2020 19:42

863 and 28g carb. Kitchen closed!
Don’t feel like I’m in the 10s yet but would be great if I’m 11 at least....planning wine tmrw night after the mad week at work so need to be super good in day! No puddings though tmrw! And no guests so will be bsd at weekend for once!
