Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Day 12, closing kitchen at 817 calories and 29g carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/03/2020 20:09

I've closed up on 1400 exactly, 65g carbs, 13k steps (inc a 5k run)

My foods been excellent but I have factored in half a bottle of wine and a Cadbury's mini roll! Not too terrible considering I'm due on tomorrow. The week before is usually awful for me but this month I've been ok, no binges or terrible carb cravings. If I can keep my cool tomorrow I should be ok.

Weekends are always hard though. No bootcamp tomorrow although I am definitely going to do a workout of some sort, probably a mix of weights, cardio, punchbag and body weight stuff like pushups, then will do my long run on Sunday. Foodwise, I plan to fast til lunch and then it's probably salad and egg like today, with steak for dinner depending on the dates. I might use the steak I have to make a Chinese stir fry and eek the meat out to two meals.

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983. I'm actually quite surprised my numbers are good today because I've been fantasising about croissants all day! Must resist ...🥐🥐🥐

thisyeargoodyear · 20/03/2020 20:33

Well done everyone Smile

I have had a terrible day - didn't eat any proper food until dinner time and then I had filled pasta and garlic bread! Baking was the main activity for my son today which was never going to be a good idea for me as I have ate a lot of chocolate and cakes filled with butter and sugar! I am going to really struggle with home schooling my 5 year old with a baby in tow and trying to keep up the new me. Anyway I am 14 lb down now after 5 weeks so that is keeping me going. I don't think I will weigh again until Tuesday next week as I plan on having quite a few gins tomorrow night and we are getting a take out for Mother's Day lunch.

Have a good weekend everyone!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/03/2020 22:13

@thisyeargoodyear I think at the moment the key is to be organised and plan really carefully. Tomorrow I am going to go through the freezer and write down everything I have in, and do a little menu plan- not necessarily each day, but jot down each meal and can cross them off as we eat them. Plan lunches as well, or save portions of evening meals for daytime lunch the next day when the kids have sandwiches (eg I have chilli for tomorrow). Soups are good, you could make a batch with veg, lentils, or make a bone broth- I freeze portions in jam jars because the jar can go in the microwave frozen to defrost and heat through.

Baking is always my downfall though, and raw cake mix is literally my nemesis. Again, freezer is your friend here, freeze the excess in small wraps so you can have one but not eat the whole batch

@thisyeargoodyear ahh that doesn’t sound easy with a 5yr old and a baby!! You’ve lost a huge amount in just 5 weeks though and could maintain for a while to give yourself a break? That’s kind of what I’m doing. I’ve decided not to calorie count but be BSD friendly. So no planning, weighing ingredients or entering into MFP as too time consuming. I’ve a menu of what we’ll eat for dinner over the next few days (done this for the last 20years as find shopping easier) BUT I weigh myself daily and happy if I’m around the 11 mark. 2 pounds above or below is fine. I just need a break from being so food obsessed now the all kids & DH are home. That kind of approach may take the pressure off a tadge?

Kimlek · 20/03/2020 23:05

Sorry that wasn’t very clear. Maybe a rest from trying to adhere to the 800 cals but plan a menu that’s BSD friendly and weigh yourself to ensure your relatively maintaining.

Good morning everyone
I’ve been on the thread for just over a year, although mainly lurking since Christmas, so lots of you won’t remember me. It’s great to read about everyone’s successes and to see all the support for everyone.
Momentous day for me today, which is prompting my post. As of this morning..... (drum roll)......I am not overweight. My bmi is healthy. YAY!!!

Reading @Kimlek 's post, I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about having everyone off. In many ways it's making me more strict as I am contemplating the damage I could do if I just ate for 12 weeks.... I am also a bit worried about food supply, so rationing for everyone even the kids. Each day I'm dishing out 1x crisps and 1x choc biscuit as their snacks but then the rest are all in the cupboard locked away. I'm actually quietly optimistic that I could be able to survive schools closures and not regain loads of weight!

However, I fear that as of today we could be self-isolating. I'm sitting here drinking my coffee listening to Ds coughing upstairs. He was rather crochety when he went to bed last night and I did wonder if he would wake up ill today. I'm now listening for more coughs and hoping he was just clearing his throat....

OP posts:
Kimlek · 21/03/2020 07:42

@Maccalenny that’s incredible!!!
I’m sorry bear I certainly don’t want to scaremonger. And hope your DS is ok.
For me it’s better to focus on maintaining for a bit... if I lose it’s a bonus but this is not going to be an easy few months with everyone at home and the inability to get foods I’d normally get. Eggs are like gold! Maybe for others the strict planning and counting will be a distraction?
I’m down again today 10.11.6 🤗

bluepixie · 21/03/2020 08:51

Catch up later but 11 stone today.

Only 1 pound loss this week but that’s fine as I’ve had weekends off every weekend and I feel that this is a sustainable way for me to loose and maintain as not finding it super hard as I know weekend I can relax a little.
9 off total and bmi is now a bit below 25.
Bsd food today but some wine tonight so will be over the 800

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/03/2020 08:53

@Kimlek oh that's ok I didn't think you were scare mongering. I'm just a fairly anxious twitchy person at times. I hope it burns calories like fidgeting does!!

I have eggs, managed to get some last week. Unfortunately they don't really keep well do they? I'm probably going to bake and freeze a few things next week to use them up so if we can't then later we can still do. Farm shops might still be having them?

(I do have a recipe for egg free cookies which if anyone is desperate later on I can share. They aren't BSD compatible at all, but we might be desperate by then!!)

RubbishSwimmer · 21/03/2020 10:44

Maccalenny that’s very impressive, and an excellent time to reach ‘healthy’!

We’re self isolating here, so far so good. I’ve a teen lad with an enormous appetite though, which is normally offset by a very sporty lifestyle - so it’ll be difficult for him.

Day 12 for me and I’m (nearly) 5 pounds down. I’ve guessed a lot with calories & carbs etc, but it seems to be working. The ability to still have cheese helps!

This staying in stuff is, like many of us, really helping me to dig out actually ingredients and cook properly, rather than just go for quick fixes.

I’m a rubbish cook, but getting less rubbish day by day.

bluepixie · 21/03/2020 11:46

@Maccalenny that’s amazing!!!! Well done u!!!

Sorry so many of u self isolating / getting coughs etc it really is a difficult time atm. Stay home and stay safe! Hopefully u have neighbours who can bring u some supplies if needed and def don’t stress about BSD in this difficult time if u run out of food.

@Kimlek did u get some food eventually! Hope that’s not the reason for all the fasting - well done on the weight too. Maybe I’ll get into the tens one day too!!

CiorstanMI · 21/03/2020 18:57

Kitchen closed on day 13 at 796 calories and 47g carbs.

Congratulations @Maccalenny that is a phenomenal loss.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/03/2020 08:26

We ended up having a pizza last night, so errrrrr, not exactly BSD! It was for dd really, she's year 11 and had just seen her friends for the last time and she was quite upset about missing out on all the milestones of leaving high school. It was therapeutic dominoes.... however, it does me no favours, I felt my stomach churn all night digesting all that stodgy dough and salt. Feel a bit doughy myself today!

Anyway, Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to you all. Hope you have a lovely day with your families at home and manage to speak to those who you can't be with today DaffodilThanksStarCakeGinWineGlitterball

Today: I'd really like to get back into my daily yoga, I haven't done it for a week! I might go for a short run in the spring sunshine. I'm going to finish painting my summerhouse as I'm trying to make it into a nice chill out space for use to use over the next few weeks.
Food will be: eggs at lunch, and a turkey casserole at dinner with a turkey thigh joint I bought (never used this cut before) and veg. I am hoping then I'll have the bone to make some soup next week.

Have a lovely day everyone

RubbishSwimmer · 22/03/2020 17:09

It’s a lovely day here thenewaveragebear1983 , hope it’s stayed the same for you so you can do those plans.

CiorstanMI · 22/03/2020 20:43

Day 14 and kitchen closed at 709 calories and 38g carbs. Thankfully the croissant obsession seems to have passed! Not sure how much weight I've lost this week as the scales have wobbled back and forth all week (time of the month). Hoping for a more encouraging result when I weigh in tomorrow.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/03/2020 21:21

Today had not exactly gone to plan but hey, it's Mother's Day. We made cake. We ate cake. Grin

Anyhoo....tomorrow! My bone broth is simmering away as we speak. I am going to fast as long as I can as I do every Monday. Then dinner will be a stir fry or Balti as I have fresh veg I need to use up. I am now overdue my period so it better arrive tomorrow or I get all hormonal and cranky.

Going for a run tomorrow and will definitely do my yoga too (did not achieve either today as too busy eating cake!)

Kimlek · 23/03/2020 06:58

Morning!! Hope you all had a good weekend. Gorgeous sunshine here again but a bit weird not being able to make the most of it. Have had this cough for a week now so self isolating. Felt quite bizarre yesterday & drank wine mindlessly. Also had a couple of frerro rocher chocs.
Static at 10.11.6 this am.
Due a delivery today so it depends if it gets cancelled again if it does I’m in trouble as the fridge is bare bar one milk a bit of cheese but zero veg. If all goes well I’ll do a Vietnamese pho for lunch and duck pancakes for dinner. My 3 girls are timetabled with school work but I’ll take the youngest on a dog walk during ‘games’. We’ve got a forest nearby that’s pretty desolate so social distancing pretty easy there!

Lndnmummy · 23/03/2020 10:55

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983 for the new thread. I’m determined to use this lockdown to kick start me, having a goal image of myself emerging in 12 weeks as a size 10. 😬
Let’s see how we go.
