Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Ooh.... spritzer sounds so good.... my husband is eating Cheerios....Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/05/2020 20:22

I haven't counted today but overall it's not been too bad. Salad with HB eggs at lunch and dinner was a indoor bbq on our raclette with various meats and salads. I did have a seeded bread roll. Yummy but a bit meat heavy. Dh and dc has pudding but I didn't; I'm doing quite well at saying no and I wonder if it's my hypnosis audio that I'm listening to each day as I seem to be doing it without really thinking about it.

Tomorrow: need to get back on plan properly. Properly counting cals and carbs, weighing food and actually trying to get 800 cals not just pretending!
Run in the morning with Dh although we are both struggling a bit with our breathing at the moment so might not go. Food will be salad at lunch and then gammon roast for dinner, with lots of veg. Perfectly possible to get an 800 cal day tomorrow if I focus my head.

Sounds like good days all around!

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext snap! I also really need fibre so ended up eating 78g of carbs today (100g of prunes and two apples - desperate times) but still managed to close the kitchen at 875kcal. After a spot of lactulose for good measure, my gut is finally responding (sorry TMI).

@thenewaveragebear1983 I made the fish bake again for lunch (with cauliflower mash) and it was lush.

bluepixie · 10/05/2020 07:53

My tart failed! It wasn’t nice I don’t know what I did wrong!!!! Apart from that a lot of wine and icecream was consumed
Back on today with a slightly sore head.

bluepixie · 10/05/2020 08:53

Just whipping up the brocolli and Stilton soup from recipie book for lunch today
Looks delicious!

agteacht · 10/05/2020 09:11

Your tart failed??! @Cream123 😂😂😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 10:06

Nothing as depressing as a failed tart 🤣

Drank a few g&t last night and therefore was awake at 5.30 (it does something weird to me) and so haven't really had a great night and feel a bit grouchy today. About to go for a short run with Dh who is equally grouchy due to his impressive hangover!

Feeling a bit ropey today - suspect the on-plan sardines with lemon and parsley from Waitrose were on the turn, even though they were in date. Gruuuu.
On the positive side, I've had a 15 hr overnight fast as didn't fancy eating ANYTHING until now. and might regret that ham and tomatoes in a few minutes Will gently sip my tea and see what happens.

bluepixie · 10/05/2020 11:32

Haha re tart!

Ps soup delicious!! Soup

Prepping for the week ahead; made high fibre, low carb, sugar free, dairy free, gluten free 'breakfast bars' which I have portioned out and will freeze individually. Originally worked out as 6 but realised I could divide into 8 instead. They come in at 218 cals, 6g carbs, 17g fat, 9 G protein and 4g fibre per bar.

Annoyingly my camera won't work but they look like cake!

70g ground flax
45g chia
Slosh of soy milk
3 eggs
100g mixed berries microwaved to defrost so the juice comes out

Mix all together, let the juice swell the chia seeds

Add 150g almond flour, 1tsp baking powder. You could add erythritol I guess at this point for a more cake like taste

Mix all together, put on a greased tray and spread it around so it's a more uniform square. Bake low (180*) for 40 minutes. Cut into equal squares (8)

829cal and 26g of carbs.

I didn’t sleep well, I’m stressed, my anxiety is playing up and all I want is toast. I am trying to resist. But my (normally supportive) husband so far has bought sourdough, bagels and chocolate chip cookies. So far I’m resisting...

NathanNathan · 10/05/2020 18:00

They sound delicious bear, I may have to get some almond flour!

My husband has made was seems like hundreds of gooey chocolate chip cookies ladybird. I have managed to resist today. Quite frankly I think I deserve a medal, but am also quietly positive that I do seem to have made a difference to my impulses on this diet!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 10/05/2020 18:08

I’m mostly only holding out because I think I have lost another 0.5kg since Friday... without that I would be eyebrow deep in breakfast cereal right now.
I’m not normally this bad, a bad night has destroyed all my will power!

CiorstanMI · 10/05/2020 19:13

Day 63, closing the kitchen at 790 calories and 48g carbs. Here's to good week for us all next week. Smile

Kimlek · 10/05/2020 20:03

Oh I’m going to make those bars tomorrow bear sound great! Guessing they’re not sweet? Was wondering if my kids would eat them as a healthy snack rather than the usual rubbish but we’ve all got dreadfully sweet teeth!

NathanNathan · 10/05/2020 20:09

@thenewaveragebear1983 we're running out of thread! Smile

VenusInfers · 10/05/2020 21:14

I sympathise @NathanNathan and @whattheladybirdsaidnext. My husband tends to be a late-night toast demolisher when I'm on this diet. It's a horrible temptation!

Interestingly he says he wants to join me on this diet tomorrow, (as he has also been a-scoffing during Lockdown) and I can't wait to see how he gets on without his beloved tonic, oatcakes and lovely, buttery toast. Knowing him, he'll probably smash it out of the park, lose that extra stone in one week flat and return to his toast eating whilst I am still chomping on boiled eggs and lettuce. Sigh.

Still, being a bit off colour (those damn sardines!) made getting though tricky-day-three on 850 cals relatively straightforward, so I can't complain. Will push to do the proper 800 tomorrow now I'm getting into the swing again.

Have a good week, everyone!

LarryUnderwood · 10/05/2020 22:22

Closing on 939cals and 26g carbs. I'm pretty delighted with how this weekend has gone really, yes I've gone over the 800 but I've managed to eat well, have a few drinks and enjoy myself without getting derailed or hitting the toast!

@Kimlek you could add sweetener (or even sugar, or dark choc chips? ) for the children to Make them sweeter. They were, I suppose like a homemade scone type of sweetness with just the fruit as sweetener . I plan to have one each day as either a meal (lunch) or dessert. They are big though so you could make them smaller if they were for snacks,

Morning everyone.

My behaviour on this thread had been thoroughly disgraceful and I am committing myself now to being on plan a lot more on the next one. Blush

Weighed in today at basically the same as last week (barring a few grams) despite actually having a really good start to last week. So not great at all.

However, meals all planned for the week ahead, exercise planned. I want to get back to doing daily yoga so I'm going to start Adrienne again from day 1. The key, the absolute biggest change I need to make is to stop eating lunch 'because it's lunchtime' and start listening to my body and eating when I'm hungry. I think because every day I am starting by 'overriding' my natural hunger, I am starting off badly and continuing.....worsely? Is that a word?

Anyway....new thread, new bear 🐻

I’m on day 4. Can I ask if carbs are meant to be kept below 50g per day. I just bought the new book (again) and I don’t see any specific mention. Sorry if it is in there and I’ve missed it.

bluepixie · 12/06/2020 14:30

@TcKay76 we are on the new thread come join!
No there is no limit but most of us find staying under 50 helps speed up weight loss and keeps us fuller. But I’m sure some don’t count it at all...if u stick to 800 and sensible carbs (beans veg etc) then u won’t have loads anyways
Good luck!
