Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Typo! 10.9.5
I was 10.11 last time I posted about 2 weeks ago

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/05/2020 08:56

Morning everyone.

I'm 10.8.5 today too @Cream123, which does mean I'm down about 4/5 pounds this week, despite really feeling like i'm struggling. I felt really low yesterday. I did resist any sweets though and for me that's a big thing at present so I'm pleased with that.

It's unrealistic to think I won't drink this weekend, so I'm not going to say I won't. However, I was going to bake VE Day stuff and I have decided that unless the dc beg to I am not going to do it (removes temptations) and also try and hold out til our bbq later to eat. I'm doing a virtual 10km race this morning so will get the steps in.

I am being quite hard on myself at the moment, it's by far more an emotional issue than a food issue. I think this weekend is the first one where I have really missed my family, lots of people doing ve stuff on their streets but we can't on ours as our driveways are too long with high fences etc. I think we are just feeling a little isolated right now. I feel a bit better today though.

Hope you all have a great day/weekend Smile

I lost 0.5kg this week.... all things considered I can live with that. I wasn’t expecting a loss at all given that this time yesterday I was almost 2kg heavier. So pleasant surprise this morning!

agteacht · 08/05/2020 09:56

Yay well done everyone on the losses!

@Cream123 you have your mojo back!

agteacht · 08/05/2020 09:57

@LarryUnderwood I also think you will be fine as long as you don't let it spiral from there! And you had a good day yesterday!

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 08/05/2020 17:06

Just come back inside from our socially distant VE street party.

I ate cake, and some chocolates. But not as much as I would have done and I'll see how I get on with no tea tonight so hopefully the damage won't be too bad. I steered clear of the booze at least!

bluepixie · 08/05/2020 17:45

Closing day on 823 and 19 carbs
About to go on a 10000 step walk now before ds bed.
Having my day off tmrw so chosen my rose wine to have in the sun and will
Make the lough dough pudding. It’s got me through the day and making me go on my walk now!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 08/05/2020 18:19

882 cal and 25g carbs. I think.... it’s hard to portion out a casserole when someone else takes a portion when you aren’t looking!

waterproofed · 08/05/2020 18:58

@Cream123 and @thenewaveragebear1983 nice to see things are on track for you both.

@thenewaveragebear1983 I also decided against baking with the kids this weekend unless they absolutely insist. Let's face it, they don't need the refined sugar any more than I do.

My new scales arrived yesterday and thankfully the weight is beginning to shift after a nearly two week plateau. Bearing in mind I started this WOE less than a month ago, I am really delighted with the results, particularly in terms of curbing my cravings and appetite. I am nearly tea total as it is (alcohol just does not agree with me) so that's one temptation I do not have to fight against.

agteacht · 08/05/2020 19:30

They are great results @waterproofed!

waterproofed · 08/05/2020 19:37

Thank you @agteacht, the plan is really working for me. Though I have to say I’m looking forward to maintenance when I don’t have to weigh my salad and my protein and maybe even have gnocchi once a month Wink.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 08/05/2020 20:29

Are you moving to maintain now waterproofed? You are now at the lower end of a healthy BMI for you height. (And your start weight is lower than my target and I’m 3 inches shorter!)

waterproofed · 08/05/2020 21:00

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I would quite like to finish the 8 weeks just to normalise my sugar addiction and insulin response. I know I was slim to start with (there is no dysmorphia going on here, I was never overweight), but I scored top marks in Dr Mosley's 'are you addicted to carbs' test thebloodsugardiet.com/quizzes/are-you-addicted-to-carbs/ and I have family history of type II diabetes in relatives who were also slim all their lives. I was often getting more than half my calories a day from chocolate and other sweet treats. My happy weight is between 62kg/9.7 and 65kg/10.3, which I had maintained for decades without difficulty (outside of pregnancies), and I am still at the higher end of that.

My plan is to basically eat this way until I finish the 8 week programme or get too slim either according to the mirror or the BMI calculators, whichever comes first. I also have no history of mental illness/disordered eating (apart from my rampant sugar addiction), so I am fairly certain I can do this safely. Quite excited to see whether I can get my body fat % low enough to see my abs.

agteacht · 08/05/2020 21:23

Yea it really seems to be working @waterproofed! What's your average carbs for each week, if you have it? I am eating more cals than you and have more weight to lose so just curious on the carb front. I also keep boozing, I need your restraint. But at your height I reckon you are looking pretty fab. It's also great to see that for someone who isn't overweight the way of eating can still work.

waterproofed · 08/05/2020 21:55

@agteacht thank you Flowers I do like the way I look and I have liked my body for most of my life. I think our culture really makes so many women loathe their bodies (whatever our size) and I just don't want to spend another day hating myself. This is the only body I will ever have - I want to appreciate it and love it the way it is and help it be the healthiest it can be. I consciously try to be as self-accepting and self-loving as I can. If that makes me sound smug, I can't say I care a great deal Wink

As for carbs, MFP delivers Smile:

Week 0 (on 5:2) 1286g total, average 50% (no wonder I was starving!)
Week 1 323g total, average 23%
Week 3 369g total, average 22%
Week 4 156g total for 5 days, average 15%

I think I used to eat like in my twenties a lot. Lots of protein, very few carbs, occasional sweet binge before my period. I think I got a bit cocky over the last couple of years and started eating french pastries as snacks and pretzels between lunch and dinner, but eating more carbs just makes me want them more, so I was hungry for sweets all the time, my blood sugar levels probably all over the place. Very happy to have found this WOE.

As for booze, honestly I wish I could take credit for being restrained - I just don't like it and could never handle it, but it does help with keeping the calories down.

agteacht · 08/05/2020 22:47

So interesting

Yea I totally get that - when I'm working (central London) it's so easy just to grab a croissant or something. Also I end up in meetings all day with very little breaks so end up grabbing anything and everything to eat. My biggest change when I go back to work will be to be more planned and mindful.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/05/2020 07:58

Morning all. Hope everyone had a good day yesterday. I drank and ate a bit too much but am back on track today. I didn't eat any sugar which really helped as I didn't just eat out of control, I ate real food.

Today: rest day from running but I am going to do a workout of some sort, maybe kettlebells out in the garden. Other than that we will probably have a fairly quiet day. Salad lunch, bbq dinner.

Some great results @waterproofed, well done!

Hello Everyone
I've been on here before earlier in the year (waves to bear) and am back to sort out the results of five weeks of Lockdown stress eating and drinking. Far too much wine & biscuits = 9lbs weight regained. Yikes.

Once I've got the weight sorted it might be a good idea to see if I can evolve a less calorie and alcohol based stress response. For now I'm ditching the sourdough, hiding the corkscrew and buying lots of salad.

Looking forward to getting to know you all over the next few weeks too!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/05/2020 08:20

Ooh now I am tempted to buy that book!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/05/2020 09:43

@agteacht me too although my debit card had taken a hammering this weekend. Realised I had spent no money in 7 weeks so...spent some money while drunk, never a good idea yesterday! But a cookery book is a sensible purchase, no?

OP posts:
Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 09/05/2020 17:04

Finishing on 759 cal and 33g carbs, which is more carbs than normal for me, but I need the fibre!

LarryUnderwood · 09/05/2020 19:46

Closing the kitchen on 959 cals and 45g carbs. I'm pleased with that, cos, well it's the weekend innit? Made smoked salmon pate, thin seeded crackers, a lovely guacamole and a delicious slaw with a vietnamese-esque dressing. Good cooking day, finishing up with a wine spritzer (I know I know it's no way to treat wine but it makes a small glass go much further!).
