Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

I just ate 2 large white choc cookies
I feel sick! 🤦🏽‍♀️ Will try to avoid dinner and stick up plan despite guests staying

Idiot!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/03/2020 17:12

@Cream123 oh no! Step away!! I have to admit it's been really hard today to get back in the zone. I was hungry as soon as I woke up and I ended up grazing on BSD friendly foods, but still- if I eat breakfast, it sets me off for the day, and true to form I've felt unsettled and unsatisfied all day. I think it's a combination of hormones (now 1 week til totm), crappy sleep this week, and obviously reawakening my carb monster yesterday, all contributing to a massive insulin spike/insulin resistance resurgence. I hate that horrible 'wanty', not hungry but can't stop eating feeling and that's definitely insulin related.

I did go for a run though, and did day 27 of yoga, and have done loads of chores off my list so it's not been a wholly unproductive day, but I guess I just feel a bit cheesed off with myself.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to bootcamp, then driving to collect some paint, so will hopefully be able to fast until lunchtime at least!

I am also bloddy starving!

CiorstanMI · 13/03/2020 19:40

I think it must be very hard to do this diet and cater for guests @Cream123 so I don't think you should feel to bad about the cookies.

Day 5, closing the kitchen at 799 calories and 44g of carbs.

Kimlek · 13/03/2020 22:44

Ugh!!! I just always fuck up! Started well with a brisk hours dog walking and fasted until 6pm other than cordial and 2 coffees. Get to hotel meet the others and it’s fizz all round! Several glasses later... actually more than several!!! I did chose food wisely with a steak and salad & no chips BUT there was A LOT of fizz!!!
I’ll skip bfast tomorrow despite it being rather fabulous here! I’ll have a homemade prawn salad (360 cals) as a proper lunch that’s sat in the car keeping cold and maybe a few olives (111) - measured just incase. Hopefully it’s all worth it it. 🏆 🥇

bluepixie · 13/03/2020 22:58

Kimlek well done for staying strong despite all the fizz! That’s usually when all my willpower is out the window!

Hope ur less
Hungry tmrw @thenewaveragebear1983

And well done @CiorstanMI for actually sticking to plan! Not easy with people over but tmrw I’m gonna be a twat and eat separate meals to my guests for brekkie and lunch they can think what they like! I’ll join in with dinner and omit the rice and wine !

RubbishSwimmer · 14/03/2020 12:40

Kimlek I’d take that as a win. Fizz + sensible food choices?? Definite win.

I think I consumed about 1300 calories yesterday, which is only 80-odd below my TDEE (which I still can’t believe is so shockingly low!!) All ‘on plan’ stuff though.

...and I had still lost another pound this morning! So 3lbs in total, and today is day 5.

thisyeargoodyear · 14/03/2020 12:56

I have not been tracking the last few days and ate half a big bar of chocolate last night but I am now in the 80 kg's rather than the 90 kg's after my morning weigh in. So I have lost just over 5.5 kg which is about 12 lb in 3 weeks. Next week I want to be at the stone mark. I will track properly starting Monday!

RubbishSwimmer · 14/03/2020 17:02

It’s 5pm and I’m only just a little bit hungry. I’ve not ate anything today yet, just had water. I also did parkrun this am then a walk to shops & library with my DD.

It seems that going over the 800 allowance yesterday by 500-odd calories, has carried me over to today.

Assume it’s not sensible to just have 300 cals today, to even it out??

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/03/2020 17:18

I'd just wait until later when you actually feel hungry and eat your meal then. So often we feel that we 'should' eat at mealtimes and actually listening to our bodies can be really insightful. Rather than plan to cut out the 300, just sort of 'bank' then for later- you might want something later on?

OP posts:
bluepixie · 14/03/2020 17:20

Oh dear
U guys r great...
I’ve failed again with guests over
They leave in am and I’m back on it. I don’t think I could do less than 800 cals though dunno how u guys do it.

RubbishSwimmer · 14/03/2020 17:52

Sorry thenewaveragebear1983 I don’t think I explained properly.

Yesterday I had 1300 cals. So 500 above what I’m supposed to have.

Today, so far, I’ve had 0 cals.

Is there some wisdom either for or against me only having 300 cals today, so that I average 800 cals over both days? Or should I look at it per day, and having just 300 cals in a day is frankly ridiculous.

Luckily I’m never driven by mealtimes, only ever eat when hungry. Hence today!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/03/2020 18:28

@RubbishSwimmer I think you should start each day with a fresh 800 regardless, so no 'carrying over' or 'paying back'. Works both ways really; 800 is probably the minimum you can have and still manage to get proper nutrients in (and we must be especially mindful of this at the moment), plus also if you are struggling and have more one day, then it's going to be even harder to cut back even more the next day.

I'm a firm believer in the old 'tabula rasa'/ blank slate mentality! So in your situation I'd still allow yourself the 800 for today if you need/want them

FWIW I'm in a really shitty mood, I feel knackered, I could eat my body weight in carbs and the fact I'm not allowed to is making me even more crabby and horrible. Aren't hormones marvellous? I am due on in about 4 days and it's just almost unbearably difficult to control myself. I've not calorie counted, but I've had 2 bowls of broth, salad lunch, salad dinner and 2 cookies! So not exactly BSD, not exactly awful either, but I will be undoubtedly bloated at weigh in on Monday.

OP posts:
CiorstanMI · 14/03/2020 20:05

Congratulations on your loss @thisyeargoodyear, that's a really good result.

I'm closing the kitchen on day 6 with 796 calories and 47g of carbs.

bluepixie · 15/03/2020 07:13

Back on it and really hoping to see the ten’s end of week
No plans at all all week including weekend so fingers crossed....(minus m day but not sure what plan is with everything going on)

thisyeargoodyear · 15/03/2020 09:14

I am finding it hard to stay on track due to all the panic around the Coronavirus. I have bought some extra pasta, tins, chocolate and tonic water for the rest of the family, but I can't resist! So had a cream egg and gin and tonic last night just because it's there! I also struggled to buy a lot of fresh stuff at the shops - no lemons, strawberries, chicken etc! I am going to walk along to the shops first thing tomorrow and try and get my normal weekly shop of fresh produce, if that fails I have a new tub of shakes and enough almond milk to see me through this week. My normal gym class has also been cancelled for the next month so I have ordered some resistance bands of Amazon which will hopefully be arriving today.

Have a good week everyone!

CiorstanMI · 15/03/2020 09:30

@thisyeargoodyear could you ask someone in your household to hide the 'dangerous' items in their room so you can't see them in the kitchen? My DH has moved all sweets, crisps and the biscuit tin to his man cave at my request and it's certainly helping me a lot.

thisyeargoodyear · 15/03/2020 09:34

@CiorstanMI that's a great idea! I will ask my husband to hide them!

bluepixie · 15/03/2020 11:27

Yes I’ve got dh to hide all the crap left over from guests.
So far had eggs and spinach am
2 coffees
Lunch chicken salad I think

Kimlek · 15/03/2020 14:32

Tesco have just this minute cancelled my 3pm delivery!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/03/2020 16:35

@Kimlek noooo! Presumably CV related??

OP posts:
Kimlek · 15/03/2020 17:08

No idea! I can only assume so. There’s no availability to rebook until next Saturday either. So that means we can’t have the roast beef etc I’d planned. We’ve not much close by so DD ordering Indian delivery so that’s not exactly BSD but I’m starving and fed up so having a night off... I’ve got some meals prepped in the freezer but no fresh veg. So can’t meal plan until I get to the shops and see if there’s anything in the shelves. Imagine if I was elderly or isolating or both.

bluepixie · 15/03/2020 17:29

Oh gosh I heard the drivers were unhappy about delivering to potentially positive cv people....but could they just drop it off outside house or something? I’m sorry it was cancelled

I went shopping no chicken no prawns no salmon

So today has been a disaster. Prob the worst since I started 3 weeks ago. I hardly even drank yest so no excuse!

I promise I’ll be good tmrw! :/ I need a shake!!!

My Ocado is coming tmrw it better come!

CiorstanMI · 15/03/2020 17:40

@kimlek how frustrating for you. I tried on Friday to book a Tesco delivery slot for Monday (normally not a problem) and found there was no available slot for the whole of next week.

On the fresh veg front, I usually parboil my green veg and freeze it in portions. I do it because DH doesn't eat much veg and it's difficult for me to get through it while it's still fresh but it does also mean I have a small stockpile - an unexpected benefit in a pandemic it seems. Hmm

Kimlek · 15/03/2020 19:30

cream123 I’ve not got cv they’ve just cancelled all the deliveries to our village for the next few weeks. And nearest supermarket (sainsbury) has empty shelves... Ocado not taking new customers; asda online not working;
