Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

@L4ur3n123 that's the hardest time I find. I like a hot drink but can't drink coffee that late, so I'm quite partial to a hot black current squash which I then take as far away from the kitchen as I can! I'd seriously move that basket of goodies though, they sound amazing and dangerous

CiorstanMI · 11/03/2020 20:49

Day 3 and am closing the kitchen at 795 cals & 42g carbs.

No signs of the dreaded keto flu yet. Don't know if that's a good sign (ie my blood sugar levels are already healthy) or a bad sign (ie I'm not actually reducing my carbs to a low enough level).

Kimlek · 12/03/2020 06:33

@thenewaveragebear1983, I think you have grounds to LTB (isn’t that what they say on MN) calling your bone broth ‘old gravy’ AND banning from paperchase!
@L4ur3n123 I’d highly recommend the BSD books for the science and the recipes. I’ve not got the fast 800 ones but I’m sure they’re good too. They give you ideas for pasta replacements such as courgetti etc, Oh and can you re-gift the basket? That is not going to be helpful!!
@CiorstanMI I never got the keto flu. Be nice to avoid it and seems like you’re on plan!!

I’m down to 10.13.8 this morning so an overnight loss of 2lbs, which I know is water and a delayed reaction to my 24hr fast 2 days ago.
I was out for lunch yesterday after an hours tennis and an hours brisk dog walk. I chose a beef rib and asked for veg instead of potatoes. Also had a large glass of wine and a lovely latte.
Out for lunch again today but will avoid wine! Will walk the dog beforehand and could do with getting some stretching in as I'm very achy and stiff!! I MUST start the 30 day yoga! bear could you just start from day one again?
Oh and thank you for the tips. I’m still hoping the event will be cancelled... think I’ll simply take a box of salad and smoked salmon. So it’s like a proper lunch.

bluepixie · 12/03/2020 07:03

Well done kimlek

Am still 11.2

Waiting for the whoosh maybe??
Plan today - egg and smoked salmon
Home made Cheese salad Greek yoghurt and rasberries
Dinner is grilled fish and veg
Comes in at 850 and 30 carbs may see if I can shave some calories from somewhere

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/03/2020 07:38

I wouldn't shave any more calories off @Cream123 . Check that your weights are correct and you're not missing anything, but your cals and carbs are ideal.

I had a little whoosh this morning as I'd randomly gained a few pounds back this week. Had a terrible night, up and down to the loo several times and this morning I'm back to 10.3! Oddly enough I actually ate more yesterday, and ate later than normal as after pta I had a piece of chicken.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 12/03/2020 07:45

I weigh everything obsessively so think I’m on track
I’m thinking my weekends off are obviously a bad idea! I’ve got guests over this weekend but only from sat lunch to Sunday lunch. I just need to avoid the cake 🍰 the food I’m making is fine if I avoid the rice and potatoes and on Sunday I’m gonna stick to my yoghurt no fry up ! So hopefully this weekend won’t be as terrible as other two and it will really drop off (here’s hoping).

L4ur3n123 · 12/03/2020 09:37

Weighed myself this morning and I'm down 6 pounds! It's my third day so I know a lot of it will be water and initial dropping but I'm soo happy to see that number getting lower!

Day ahead planned already > swapped my zero fat greek yoghurt to full fat and had a few berries instead of banana or grapes.

Lunch and dinner will be the same as the last few days as we're using what we have in the fridge already so cucumber, hummus, pepperami and piece of cheese for lunch, and eggs and veggies for dinner!

RubbishSwimmer · 12/03/2020 09:41

Good morning everyone.

Day 3 for me, and the scales tell me I’ve lost a pound. I know it’s not a pound of fat, but I’m taking that nonetheless.

This thread is so lovely and helpful, thanks to all who are posting ideas and support.

CaptainBrickbeard · 12/03/2020 12:01

So great to see the losses from the new people - very motivating!

I had a mini whoosh too; unexpectedly at the weight I set as a target for later this month so that feel great.

Now working at home full time and bracing myself for school closures and wondering if I can hold out against panic-snacking/comfort-eating!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/03/2020 13:55

Yes I am keeping half an eye on the news too. I'd actually like them to close the schools, I have 3 dc and work in a college and 2 schools myself so we have exposure to probably 3000 people all in, maybe more. I would much prefer to be held inside well, than be ill in 2 weeks time. It is what it is, we are fairly well and healthy as a family, but I'd be concerned about food supplies etc. I really feel for people who have health concerns or immunity issues (I have a friend whose child had cystic fibrosis for example)

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/03/2020 16:22

Today has gone all of a sudden quite rapidly downhill! Took the dc to McDonald's and I normally don't have anything but I had a Sprite Zero and chicken selects and salad- no fries. Checked online after and that came to around 750 cals! Wowzers! And then instead of going 'ok, well that's just about possible to recover from' I've just stood in my kitchen and eaten 2 cream eggs and a wagon wheel???!!! Why???! That's crazy. I blame some sort of msg in the McDonald's, it was like a red mist came down over me. If it's any consolation, I feel rather sick now after all that sugar!

OP posts:
Kimlek · 12/03/2020 18:45

Aw bear! That’s the Freddo switch. Something just goes and you don’t care and you eat 4 or a wagon wheel and cream eggs!! Craziness!!!
I had a lively lunch with a friend I’ve not seen for a year. Chose the steak and asked for veg rather than the fries. It came with cherry toms, garlic mushrooms, rocket and onion rings. I don’t think I’ve ever had an onion ring... ate 5 of them. Plugged into MFP and oh my word!! I could have had 2 steaks. Or even the fries!!!! I am stuffed though and certainly don’t need dinner. Just need to stay clear of the evening snacks.
I’m very impressed with your day 3 losses!! 6lbs!! Took me around 5/6 weeks to lose that much so huge well done! And a lb in just 3 days is great going too!! Well done!

bluepixie · 12/03/2020 19:05

Well done on the great losses everyone! Whoopy!!!!
I’ve closed kitchen on 850 but feeling hungry :/
Oh dear - I’d love a creme egg though!!! Hope u enjoyed it at least!!

RubbishSwimmer · 12/03/2020 19:13

Quick one - does anyone listen to Secret World of Slimming Clubs podcast? It’s bloody hilarious!!

I just stumbled across it, and then binged about 8 episodes today. Laugh out loud funny. They’ve just done a week of Fast 800.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/03/2020 20:38

@RubbishSwimmer no I haven't but that sounds right up my street! I might listen to that on my run tomorrow!

OP posts:
Kimlek · 12/03/2020 21:20

Agh! I need to get with it and work out how to get podcasts!!

CiorstanMI · 12/03/2020 21:22

Ooh I wish you hadn't mentioned cream eggs!

Day 4 over and am closing the kitchen at 871 calories and 54g carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/03/2020 21:49

My carb and cal intake today is, quite frankly, obscene. Tomorrow is a mandatory fast day and a very light dinner.

@Kimlek if you google the title it should take you to it, or if you're on iPhone just download the podcast app and search for it.

OP posts:
Kimlek · 13/03/2020 06:10

That was easy! Thank you bear
Can’t believe I’m awake. I’ve got a long drive today so could have done with a big sleep! Tomorrow my youngest has the indoor event with 30 schools across the country. I was hoping it’d be cancelled as it’s definitely a Coronavirus risk!
I’ve not planned today other than walk the dog, collect my DD and her team mates early from school and drive 4 hours to the hotel. I’m wondering whether to fast until dinner (bar coffee with milk) as no doubt the hotel dinner will be calorific. I then need to entertain the kids at the hotel without drinking! Wish me luck!!

bluepixie · 13/03/2020 07:01

11.1 today so down another one. So that’s 8 pounds off in 19 days. Hoping for another one of today but not sure that will happen!

Have a good Friday all
Yoghurt for brekkie
Turkey stir fry lunch
Chicken curry tonight but with most the sauce removed and cauliflower rice!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/03/2020 07:09

I'm 2lbs up today normally I say 'it's only water' but today I am fully aware that it is creme eggs, crusty bread and red wine.

But y'all know me: the 'start again queen' - and that's what I shall do. Just planning out my day of housework chores, life admin, work prep and the usual thrilling activities! I'm going to bung my soup into the slow cooker to get simmering away and that should reset me a bit.

It looks set to be a lovely crisp spring weekend so plenty of outdoor jobs to do tomorrow and Sunday too and no social plans to derail me.

@Kimlek I hope your DD's event goes well. Enjoy your picnic!

@thenewaveragebear1983
Draw a line under it and today is a fresh day! I slipped up and had 3 caramels last night 🤣🤣 it’s team lunch today so I’m going to try to make the most sensible choice possible...

(Also officially half a stone down on day 4! I’ve got a lot to lose so I’m expecting it to start slowing down soon ☹️☹️)

RubbishSwimmer · 13/03/2020 10:45

thenewaveragebear1983 that 2lbs up sounds worth it to me. I’m only on day 4 but am REALLY missing crusty bread.

Well done L4ur3n124, that’s impressive!

My scales tell me I’m 2lbs down, which I’m really pleased with. I’ve not much to lose I guess, so thought this would be much slower.

BUT NOW I WANT CRUSTY BREAD!!

RubbishSwimmer · 13/03/2020 10:46

And sorry, well done Cream123 also.

bluepixie · 13/03/2020 12:13

Had my lunch and hungry
Never good!!!
