Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

don't know exactly but guestimate I take about 10-12 minutes? I've only been running for the last 2 months - i couldn't do anything 2 months ago - you'll be doing 20 -30 mins runs with no breaks in a few weeks time! scary or what!?!
think my ankle looks a bit swollen after today's slow run so I'm sat here with it in a bucket of ice! tbh I think 3 times a week is too much for my legs and ankles I might move back down to twice a week plus a cycle at the gym instead of the third run. are you all doing 3 runs?

CoteDAzur · 18/02/2010 21:15

I am doing at least three runs, because I have two gym sessions a week where I train on treadmill as well as other cardio, and I also do at least one BUPA run a week.

sanfairyann · 18/02/2010 21:19

respect!

Rollergirl1 · 18/02/2010 21:27

Woo, 45 mins? I'm impressed! I have been running 3 miles (just under 5k) 3 times a week for last 5 runs. That's taking me 30 to 33 mins and am utterly knackered by the end of it. Can't imagine running for an extra 10 mins!

I am doing 3 runs a week but mainly cos I'm being quite obsessive about it! It was raining really badly on tues night which is when i was intending to run. There is no way on earth any sane human being would have gone out in that weather. So I didn't. But i felt decidedly twitchy all night because I hadn't run. I think I might be forming a bit of an addiction...

Just as an aside, i started off 2nd week in jan doing the couch to 5k programme, starting with the 1st week, but felt that if I pushed myself I could do more. I ran a mile at the end of the 2nd week and timed myself and realised that i could run continously for much longer than i thought. I reckon alot of you ladies can run more than you think. You may well surprise yourself!

Rollergirl1 · 18/02/2010 21:51

sanfairyann: Just reading other thread. How are your trainers bothering you? Even if you've been wearing a month i'd take them back or at least get them checked out. They cost enough and these places are meant to fit you properly so you don't have any discomfort and/or injure yourself!

I have a bit of a weakness in my right knee and was worried that running might exacerbate but I have been fine and my trainers feel great.

4 miles btw? Respect.

CoteDAzur · 19/02/2010 12:19

Raining again - boo hoo. In a place that has about 320 days of sunshine per year, it's very strange that we had almost a full week of rain.

I'm also itching to run again, and it does feel like an addiction. SIL reminded me that when she was last visiting us, I looked at people running a race and said "What is wrong with these people?" Now I am preparing for a 10K in May.

llareggub · 19/02/2010 19:37

4K! 4K! I did 4K!

I was at the gym and having decided to repeat week 4, I ran 5 minutes on the treadmill. I felt fine so decided to carry on for 2 minutes. I got to 7 minutes, felt fine so decided to press on in 2 minute slots until I felt the need to walk. I got to 13 minutes and decided that I ought to walk for fear of overdoing it, so walked for 3.

I got to 30 minutes and thought I'd press on until I got to 4K, so ran for 5 minutes. I felt FANTASTIC and had a real buzz afterwards.

Woo hoo! I can't believe how far I've come in 5 weeks. This is amazing.

sanfairyann · 19/02/2010 20:35

yay!!! that is so cool - well done!!

yep rollergirl, trainers are annoying me - I don't think they fit properly round one of the ankles. today I was thinking maybe I'll get some more (must be feeling flush) if I'm going to do longer runs

did I say I'm planning on trying a 10k late april/early may as a bit of advance training for the GNR - am excited! booked a room for the GNR the other week - ouch - the travellodge wanted £200 a night!! we're not staying there

wuglet · 19/02/2010 21:44

Well done llaregub!
I can only just manage 4k including the warmup at the moment

Am due to do W5R3 (20 min run) tomorrow so that might get me a bit further...

OP posts:
ClaudiaSchiffer · 19/02/2010 22:06

Hi all, I've just done W5 r3. Run 8 mins x 3. I'm finding it all a bit hard at the mo. I started off the week really well but have found it increasingly difficult.. Not sure if I'm coming down with something - feel ok just tired.

I need something to boost my mojo.

CoteDAzur · 20/02/2010 08:49

4K is fantastic! I ran in my dreams last night, but no chance to do it until perhaps this afternoon

tothymammysing · 20/02/2010 10:15

I've just started on Week 1, but Mr Ullrey's music is making my brain melt so I found these different music which are a little bit better.

This thread inspired me to get started so thanks!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/02/2010 11:00

Well done llaregub and everyone else! It's such a good feeling when you can feel you're fitness improving.

I ran a slow 3 miles yesterday along the seafront and then went out on the South Downs in the most glorious sunshine today. I did 4.75 miles without stopping which I was chuffed with. It was a very uneven path and quite hilly so I was surprised I could keep going.

I can definitely feel my fitness improving now. It just feels so good to be out on the hills aswell. The views are fantastic and you hardly see a soul.

Good luck tothymammysing.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/02/2010 19:58

Eeek...Have just entered the Great South Run. Up until this morning I vowed I would never do a 'race' but it just struck me that I need a goal.

It's only 10 miles, although I estimated my time based on 13 miles which is what I thought it was.

Also it's not till October so loads of time to train.

sanfairyann · 20/02/2010 20:45

''it's only 10 miles'' swoon

wuglet · 21/02/2010 20:22

Just done W5R3 (20 min run)
Couldn't face it yesterday as my legs were too stiff.
Took it v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y but did it!

CoteDAzur · 21/02/2010 21:08

I did W5R1 tonight. My first night run It was very well lit, actually, and despite the wind, I was quite hot towards the end - 4.5 kms in 34 mins and I wasn't dead in the end

sanfairyann · 21/02/2010 22:28

wow that's a great time as well
I couldn't run cos of the snow so went swimming instead

all mine bar one have been night runs - quite fancy seeing what it looks like in the day tbh. I can usually only go after the kids are in bed tho so until it's May/June not much chance of seeing daylight

ClaudiaSchiffer · 21/02/2010 22:46

Wow well done everyone. I went out this morning and ran for a while - not sure how long . . 15 mins (optimistic)?

I need to up my effort I think, you guys are doing great.

Next out on Wednesday where I'll do run 1 of wk 6 as this mornings run was without my iphone so had to sort of make-it-up-as-I-go-along.

I totally love it but when does it get easier???

ClaudiaSchiffer · 22/02/2010 04:07

I've got some new running shoes. I'm so excited I want to go out immediately and zoom round the block - unfortunately I have my 2 yr old with me and have to get the 4 yr old from Kindy soon. Darn it.

Also I wanted to get one of those iphone arm holder thingumyjigs but the sportshop I went to didn't have any. I did have a VERY nice bright pink Nike running top though. I'll try looking on-line.

HairyMaclary · 22/02/2010 10:29

Hello! I'm coming back to give myself some motivation! I found the 1 Week 4 run I did really hard and it really hurt my knee, half term has been an excuse to stop (also really not had the time). Today though I should be running now.... but I'm not, not sure whether to do Week 4 or go back to Week 3 for a bit (also don't want to run in the rain!!)

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 22/02/2010 11:13

I would go back a week if you found it a bit tough HairyMaclary, it will do more for your confidence and motivation if nothing else.

I went out in the rain today, it was so wet. My trainers had puddles in the bottom by the end of the first mile.

3 and a bit miles today.

HairyMaclary · 22/02/2010 11:30

Well the motivation worked! I've just got back, did week 4 and found it surprisingly easy . It feels so good to be running again, I just needed to get off the sofa! I still have no idea how far I have run - how do you all work it out? My knee held up too which is great - I think I'm back!!

Rollergirl1 · 22/02/2010 11:51

Cote: That is a good time. Well done! .

I have been running 5k for the last 6 runs and yesterday I decided to run for an extra 10 mins in an attempt to start upping my distance. I did my usual 5k route and then just carried on. When I mapped it I ran an extra 1.5k which puts me at 6.5k in 40mins. So I am definitely getting there!

I was absolutely dead on my feet though when I got home and I reckon my face was beetroot red for a good couple of hours. Am also pretty achey today too.

On the weight front, still haven't really lost any weight. I tend to lose a few pounds during the week when I am off alcohol and watching what I eat. But I put it back on again over the weekend. However I am definitely going in a lot more at the waist and i'm starting to develop a line down the middle of my torso which I haven't had for a long while so I am definitely burning some fat.

persephonesnape · 22/02/2010 12:06

wk 3 day 3 completed on saturday. with my iphone stuffed down my bra. was bloody murder though.

I'm thinking of a belkin ipod arm thingy - half price in argos at the mo i think...
