New Years Resolution couch to 5k thread

Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

OP posts:
llareggub · 04/01/2010 21:09

Yes! Thanks for starting this; I'd thought of doing it but hadn't got round to it.

I started yesterday and felt I managed the run 1 minute, walk for 2 minutes fairly easy at first but by the end I was so, so cold! I need to buy a hat and gloves tomorrow before I venture out again.

I felt really energised afterwards, and feel great today. I can't wait to go back out tomorrow.

I am so not a runner though! If I can do it, anyone can.

MmeLindt · 04/01/2010 21:20

I had psyched myself up to starting today but it has snowed all day. I did the first training unit on the crosstrainer, better than nothing I guess.

I downloaded a great app for my iPhone which allows me to do my own training programme, complete with beeps when to walk or run whole listenig to my own music. And it records distance and route. Pretty cool.

popsycal · 04/01/2010 21:21

a plan for you

inchhighprivateeye · 04/01/2010 21:21

Am thinking of starting, but need a different running plan! Have tried to do couch to 5k twice, but both times got stuck on the session where it suddenly leaps from 8min to 20min running. How the heck are you supposed to do that?

popsycal · 04/01/2010 21:23

]]www.bupa.co.uk/running/training/training-programmes/beginner-5km/ one for you inchhigh]]

popsycal · 04/01/2010 21:23

here inchhigh

inchhighprivateeye · 04/01/2010 21:26

oo, thanks for that, looks a lot more do-able. Does it matter if you don't do the rest days? I do a Body Pump and a Body Combat class so with all that will have Legs of Steel. Or a big muscly arse.

popsycal · 04/01/2010 21:28

Depends on current fitness levels I guess....

Also - the bupa plan is 8 weeks....am sure we could cobb;e together a few extra weeks to get you to be more4 comfortable running the full 5k. The bupa programmes work best for me.

Well done everyone btw. You will not regret it

squashedfrogs · 04/01/2010 21:37

I'm gearing myself up to start training tomorrow. I'm a bit apprehensive but I'm sure it'll be fine once I get started.

mistletoeandjuan · 04/01/2010 21:45

Was all ready to start this week but the pavements around here are so icy I can't even manage a brisk walk! Suppose I could walk/run on the spot in the living room?

wuglet · 04/01/2010 22:11

Hooray I'm not alone!
Did my first run today.

So far I have learnt:
I am not quite as unfit as I feared (well I didn't drop down dead in the middle of it which I thought might be a distinct possibility)

Even if it is -4 outside, a T-shirt, thin jumper and fleece is overdoing it and you will end up with most of it tied round your waist

Running in freezing weather means you don't feel the aches until you thaw out (ouch)

I am using the Michael Ullrey (?sp) podcast - had to go and buy an ipod especially (well that is how I have justified it, have been wanting one for ages!)

Have also told everyone I am doing it so hopefully I won't give up after 2 weeks!

not Michael, Robert

I think I need to join this thread - I can't do the Race for Life but my brother had the genius idea of signing me and my sister and all our respective DPs for a half marathon (in relay teams, we're not masochists) later this year in aid of the hospice that is looking after our Dad.

I shouldn't start until I've seen my GP about my dodgy back but other than that I need some running clothes and the oomph to get out of the house and actually do it

And perhaps an ipod Wuglet?

Kayzr · 05/01/2010 08:58

I'll join this thread too. I signed up to do Popsycal's run as I need to lose weight and I have wanted to start running for a while.

Just ordered some trainers and some running clothes. I just have got to get rid of the snow and ice so I can actually go out without falling over and breaking something.

I have also registered interest in doing the Race For Life.

I do need a check up with the GP really as I have a bad knee.

MamaG · 05/01/2010 10:46

Thanks squashedfrog

Disenchanted3 · 05/01/2010 10:48

i was planning on it but so much ice and now 6inches of snow i just can't yet

squashedfrogs · 05/01/2010 20:51

I've just got back from my first run and happily I have survived! I haven't run anywhere for a very very long time so I am feeling quite pleased with myself now.

ellielou02 · 05/01/2010 20:57

I joined the last thread but stopped over the festive season, only got to week 2 so started again yesterday (in the snow) from the start but my knee is making funny noises today, its not sore so hopefully will go out again tomorrow.

wuglet · 06/01/2010 21:54

Well I have been out in the snow again tonight.
Was a bit harder this time - I had downloaded the rest of the podcasts (or so I thought) but instead seem to have replaced week 1 with week 9! The USB ports on my home computer don't work so I have to download at work (shh!) so I couldn't reload it. And seeing as that was the only music on the ipod I listened to that one and guessed the 60/90 seconds. It definitely brought home to me that I do need a random American bloke talking to me to do it properly!

Hopefully will get ipod sorted tomorrow then will be set again for Friday.

Was scary to think that in 9 weeks I will be running for the whole 1/2 hr......

Kayzr · 07/01/2010 08:11

I've got my GP appointment today. I am hoping that my knee isn't too bad.

I want to go out running but I am not keen on running in the snow and ice as I don't want to slip and break something.

Kayzr · 07/01/2010 09:25

Change of plan. GP surgery just rang to say that the GP I was seeing got stuck in the snow on the way to work so I am now going next Wednesday.

vachebleu · 09/01/2010 09:40

Hello all, I'm going to join you too! I failed the couch to 5k last year and I really need to lose my Christmas weight. I went for a brisk walk in the snow yesterday. I had to change pace a lot for the different conditions, surely that counts as intervals? I think I'll go to the gym tomorrow to do the first stage.

wuglet · 09/01/2010 10:10

welcome vachebleu
I did my last run of week 1 last night - was a bit skiddy!
Am hoping that once I start running on actual pavements rather then 4" snow on top of black ice then it will all seem ridiculously easy.

TBH it has been quite enjoyable running in the snow (or maybe the hypothermia has addled my brain). I managed to get the ipod sorted (turns out it was set to delete podacts after you had listened to it once) so I was able to run along with Raaaahbart again.

OP posts:
squashedfrogs · 10/01/2010 19:57

I've been out again today, missed going out on Thursday due to snow but went out anyway this afternoon and huffed and puffed around the park a few times.

I'm thinking I might have to do Robert whatshisface's week 1 podcast next week as well as I'm really not that fit and probably need to ease myself into this. It's oddly good fun though - I never thought I'd say that about exercising and particularly running!

Kayzr · 11/01/2010 08:15

I might have to start running in my wellies!! I am getting a bit fed up now.
