Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

Hi all and welcome newcomers
Hope the achey people are feeling better.

I did W4R2 today - was really not in the mood having been out drinking last night and only got 4 hrs sleep...but forced myself to do it anyway. Pushed myself a bit harder on the first run so did actually manage to go a bit further (only about 100m but every little helps!)

Week 5 does not look good.......

I've just done my 2 miles, I managed to RUN the first one non stop, but have forgotten (and can't work out on Runkeeper) how long it took. Anyway I think it took about 8 mins. The second mile was MUCH harder and I had to keep stopping and running again. But I didn't have a rest day yesterday so my legs were a bit wobbly.

Cote, I would put down 55mins - totally respectable and doable time. Give yourself something to aim for.

llareggub · 13/02/2010 12:51

cote, have a look at this which calculates your running time. It estimates that my 5k should take 41 minutes.

I've just run a timed mile which took 12 minutes. Oddly, it is slower than the first timed run that I did in week 1. But I did do this one on the treadmill and it took 20 secs for so for me to get it up to speed, so I shall blame that and the fact that my treadmill is probably more accurate than the milometer on my car!

However I am pleased that I ran a whole mile. I didn't walk at all although I did slow down a lot at 8 minutes for 1 minute. I feel very proud; I think the rest this week did me good. I'm going to repeat week 4 in any case.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/02/2010 14:09

Hello ladies, mind if I join you?!

I am not really following the C25K as I'd done some running last year but had to have 3 months off for an abdominal op. I started running again 2 weeks ago after a few weeks out in my mountain bike. Unfortunately I came off my bike and hurt myself quite badly so now my bike has been relegated to the gararge and I'm sticking to jogging

I started off doing a 3 mile loop round the streets and last time I did this I managed it with one stop only.

Today I went out on the South Downs where I used to cycle. It's quite hilly so I wasn't sure how I would cope but I loved it actually. I ran 3 miles before I had to walk and did 4.9 miles in total. The first bit was definitely the hardest, running into a biting wind and uphill aswell!! Once I got into my stride and my hands thawed out a bit it was lovely.

I figure I will make Saturday my longer run and do shorter round the streets runs Monday and Wednesday, see how I go

CoteDAzur · 13/02/2010 20:27

llareggub - Thanks but that link didn't work for me. Is it simple arithmetics, a la "If I did 3 kms in 20 mins, then I will do 10 kms in .... mins"?

ClaudiaSchiffer · 14/02/2010 11:10

Lawks! Was planning on doing day 1 wk 5 of the bupa plan tomorrow morning, but the BUPA site is down and I dunno what we're suppose to do . . . does anyone know?

If no answers I'll do more of wk 4 I guess?

Tabithacat · 14/02/2010 14:57

Hi Claudia - week 5, day 1 is a scary run 7 minutes, walk 2 and repeat 3 times. Let me know how you get on because that is what I will be doing on Tuesday and it sounds unacheivable at the moment.

Today I did the run 1 mile, walk/run next mile. The first mile was ok, did it in 9.54 minutes but I really struggled to find the motivation for the second and walked most of it. So the two miles took 24 minutes, which was a bit disheartening.

Somebody please tell it will be alright!

CoteDAzur · 14/02/2010 15:00

I did W4D2 today, with an extra 5 min run at the end for good measure. It felt like a good idea at the beginning, not such a great idea towards the end, but was manageable.

So next comes a 1 Mile run. Not sure I can do it, really, but we'll see.

Meanwhile, in a moment of madness, I registed to the 10K The Monaco Challenge which takes place in a month! There is no way I will be ready to run the whole 10K by then, but maybe I can walk some of the way, like the ramp going up to the Casino. It's for a good cause, and I will get a few photos of myself looking all sweaty, broken, and undignified, so well worth it

Rollergirl1 · 14/02/2010 20:47

Hi ladies, have been running 5k for the last 4 runs and have managed to get my time down to 30mins. I think I will try to start upping my distance now on my weekend run, although not sure how as am totally knackered by the end of it! It's been really cold this week and I haven't enjoyed being out as much. Roll on light evenings and warmer weather!

Not really sure what to do, BIL has a good friend that works at the salvation army and can get me a place for the great north run. Not sure if I'm getting a bit ahead of myself or not?

ClaudiaSchiffer · 14/02/2010 22:30

Rollergirl that's excellent, well done. Remind me though, did you start off doing nowt at the same time as the rest of us or were you running a bit before this thread started??

When is the Great North Run, and how long is it???

I failed to do my running this morning, my iphone had run out of batteries so I went out under my own steam and failed to run further than a few metres without giving up and changing to a brisk walk. I am so obedient, I need a voice telling me what to do or I'll just lollop about.

llareggub · 14/02/2010 22:40

You know, Claudia I was exactly the same today. I went out in lovely bright sunshine and decided to run as far as I could without doing the run/walk thing. I've only used the treadmill for the last 2 weeks and I wanted to get out on the road.

I only managed to do a mile, and that included my 5 minute brisk walk warm-up. Still, it is good to know a quick mile route as it was quite nice to get out, run and come home in 15 minutes. I found it hard to do without the run/walk thing and found myself walking because I couldn't be bothered to run.

This week has been bit of a wash out really so I am going to repeat week 4.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 15/02/2010 12:06

Well I'm full of cold but still dragged myself out this morning.

It was really tough!! I really plodded but managed to do it without stopping which I was pleased with.

That is my aim really for the next few weeks, to work on my endurance rather than speed. I'm never going to be fast

persephonesnape · 15/02/2010 12:37

did day two week two on saturday - now I feel like a run - but have started a cold. not sure if i sould run whilst feeling a bit meh.

Rollergirl1 · 15/02/2010 16:14

Claudia: I started off from scratch at the same time. I wasn't running before, although I used to be good at long distant running when at school and used to run for my county (although that was 20 years ago now!). Also I was swimming 3 times a week and have been on and off for years so I don't think my general fitness was that bad.

The GNR is in September and is a half marathon. So I would have a good 6 months to train for it.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 16/02/2010 01:27

Yayyyyyyy did day 1 wk FIVE - ran 7min and walked 2. Felt A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.

I totally have endorphins raging around my body now. Brilliant. Best drug ever

Well done Rollergirl, I am in awe!

wuglet · 16/02/2010 20:39

Week 5 Run 1 done here as well (wussy Raab one of 3x5min!)

I was actually talking to someone earlier today and saying I have been feeling more positive (not that I was particularly depressed before) and that was the first time it occurred to me it is since I started running.

Anyone want to indulge me in a bit of running porn? I have taken to "rewarding" myself for completing each week with a bit of running kit.
So far I have:

Ipod shuffle
Fancy trainers (Mizuno wave something)
Fancy socks (?run sky run)
Reflective armbands
Proper running top (nike airfit)

The two things that I think I still want need are the trousers and gloves. My trakky bottoms are perfectly serviceable and I don't think I am ready to expose the world to my derriere in skintight lycra just yet.
Any recommendations for other tops/socks/bits of kit??

CoteDAzur · 16/02/2010 20:52

wuglet - I'm with you on running paraphernalia and have been running with iPhone (and RunKeeper app) and Nike running trousers which I bought after falling flat on my face when running with a track suit. Now I know why running trousers are so narrow at the ankles, incidentally. I recommend Nike's armband for iPhone and iPod, as well.

sanfairyann · 16/02/2010 21:04

i've never worn so much pink in my life - sportsdirect seems to specialise in cheap but pink running gear. I've also got some very cool tops, skintight running trousers and shoes (that I don't really like), but no ipod/iphone - just me and my thoughts. anyone else not run to music/training progs or am I the last of the neanderthals?

ClaudiaSchiffer · 16/02/2010 21:09

mmmmmmmmm running porn.

iphone arm band you say . . .. I'm off to get one today - It gets reet on my wick, having to carry it around - gets tangled in the dogs lead.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 17/02/2010 08:21

Oh god, I'm a terrible one for buying kit.

Last year it was cycling stuff as I was doing alot of off-roading but I still wear my winter cycling tights for running and my cycling jacket.

I have recently bought lovely new trainers and trail running shoes for off-road running, an ipod shuffle and nike plus sportband

Oh, and I bought a hat yesterday and ordered new headphones...

I thought running was supposed to be cheap

I don't think I'd even get to the end of the road without my music sanfairyann, it keeps me going.

llareggub · 17/02/2010 09:02

I am very at this talk of running kit. I'm still on unpaid maternity leave so new kit will have to wait until I go back in April. Until then I am running sans ipod, headphones and "proper" running kit. In all honesty I shall probably never run with headphones as I have ridiculously small ears and headphones don't go in properly!

I'm repeated week 4 this week. I went out on Sunday for a mile run and felt terrible. I came back and did a Davina exercise DVD and have been aching ever since. But I'm going to head to the gym this morning in any case.

CoteDAzur · 17/02/2010 16:11

I was going to start W5 today but it's been pouring down in the sunny French Riviera [sad|

sanfairyann · 17/02/2010 21:49

where's my heart bleeding emoticon cotedazur?

i had to run in the blooming snow yesterday. wish winter would stop now!

ran for 45 mins yesterday but v slowly. pleased cos i feel fine today

CoteDAzur · 18/02/2010 13:52

Ooh 45 mins - You are way out of my league!

I ran the last day of W4 today: 1 mile. It took me 11 mins 30 secs. It is the first time in at least a decade that I ran for over 10 mins and for that I am pleased, but can't help but wonder if I the slowest snail of them all. How long did you all take to run a mile?

llareggub · 18/02/2010 14:06

Oddly the first time I ran the mile at the end of week 1 I did it in 11 minutes something. Last week I was slower yet ran it all, and did it in 12 minutes. However first time was on the road and second time was on a treadmill so there could be an issue with the accuracy of the mile first time around.

So, you definitely aren't the slowest!
