Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

OP posts:

Have you done circuit training? That's quite good as it is varied. Ikwym - same old same old = boring +++ but I need to know I can run 5k on a regular basis. Ideally when I've finished the c25k and am running that distance quite regularly I will start varying my routine and doing aerobics or swimming twice a week, running once a week. Think I'll be able to continue that without getting too bored. I've just stopped bf so am hoping I'll lose a bit of weight (esp. in the bust area ).

ladylush · 01/06/2010 11:04

I've got a bit behind as only able to go once last week. Went yesterday. Knees and lower back are hurting. dh thinks it could be that my lower back is trying to compensate for weak knees. I think I do lean forward slightly when I run.

CoupleofKooks · 02/06/2010 07:50

dp went on a running course (POSE method) and they teach you to lean right back to avoid injury, it looks so odd and upright but apparently works

i don't really know much about circuit training? i wonder if i will enjoy running more when i can just do it for enjoyment and not be bound by the podcast
having said that the podcast is all that has kept me going...
i did wk 8 run 1 yesterday - really getting close to the end!
i thought the times were a bit off? and i had to stop for couple of minutes in the middle (long story), but i did the 2.75 miles, in less than 28 mins i believe

ladylush · 03/06/2010 10:57

I used to do circuit training once or twice a week and aerobics on the other days. I was my fittest when doing this regime. Circuits is kind of bursts of activity but different tasks each time. So anything from skipping to press ups to squats etc. I suppose it's a bit like interval training. Yes I think I'll enjoy running more when the programme is finished. You're almost there now

ladylush · 03/06/2010 11:08

Meant to say...your time is really good I'm slow so I don't think I'll be up to 2.75 miles at 28 mins. In 25 mins I am only doing 3.75k and that is including the 5 min cool down (so 30 mins altogether). I am due to do week 8 run 1 tonight or tomorrow.

CoupleofKooks · 03/06/2010 19:08

oh thank you - i am almost there aren;t i? will go tomorrow hopefully
i feel like i am going pretty slow most of the time but i have REALLY long legs so i presume that helps
you know the cool down - i laugh when he says "slow down to your brisk walking pace"
i am so shagged i virtually stop and must look like a bad advert for running as i lurch home red-faced

i don;t think i could do circuit training!

hope your wk 8 run goes well

ladylush · 04/06/2010 10:12

I have long legs too but doesn't seem to be helping
Didn't go yesterday as met dh at his work with the kids then went to the park to enjoy the evening sunshine Must go tonight though.
Someone told me I should raise the incline on the treadmill as running with it flat is bad for the knees.

ladylush · 05/06/2010 10:07

Right, I did the 28 min run yesterday. Put the treadmill on a slight incline. Knees much better. Back aching a bit last night but ok today. Legs feel great. In 28 mins I only ran 3.8k so I am going to need to work on my speed in time. I just feel that if I run faster I won't be able to maintain it, though I suppose I could do intervals where I run faster which will improve my time.
Looks like it's just you and I left on this thread

CoupleofKooks · 05/06/2010 10:44

well done lush, the time is important, as well as the distance, and you have managed to run for 28 mins which is no mean feat
i know what you mean about not sustaining it - i do mentally try to divide it up into periods where i run faster and slower - would help if rob said "you've done 5 mins" now and again

yes i think it is just us! it's taken me a while to do this "9 week programme"
i didn't get out in the week for a second run but am hoping to go later
not very keen on this heat

CoupleofKooks · 06/06/2010 18:51

did wk 8 run 2 - managed 2.67 miles - was really hot and muggy - i kept wishing it would rain
it was hard work but i just kept thinking if i stopped i would have to do it all again another day! the only thing that's keeping me going some days is finishing this whole ruddy thing

ladylush · 06/06/2010 20:36

Well done Kooks No way could I have run outside in this weather. Doing week 8 run 2 tomorrow night. Should've gone today but it was too hectic trying to fit everything in.

CoupleofKooks · 06/06/2010 22:27

it was quite bad
when i started it was raining and i felt pissed off as it had been dry all day
after about 10 mins i was praying for it to start raining again!

ladylush · 06/06/2010 22:33

lol Used to quite like running in the rain but that was when I was in my early twenties and only used to run for 20 mins max.

ladylush · 08/06/2010 09:57

Did week 8 run 2 yesterday. Tried running faster at 3 min intervals but by 15 mins in I wanted to give up I kept going but stopped doing the faster run. Think I'll have to take it a bit easier with the faster intervals. Have you noticed any changes to your body/weight since you started the programme? I don't own any scales but my clothes fit/look better and my undies are now baggy so I had to buy some in a smaller size

CoupleofKooks · 08/06/2010 15:49

that's great, well done
i'll go out later if i can bear it
yes i am actively trying to lose weight, which is really why i started this - i've lost half a stone which makes me feel SOOOO much better - have just bought a load of new clothes and don't feel like middle aged postnatal frump anymore

CoupleofKooks · 08/06/2010 20:38

did wk 8 run 3 - the robcast is definitely a minute short, so i even did the extra minute to make it 28 mins this time [virtuous]
mapmyrun says i ran 2.75 miles
when am i ever going to get to 5k? it seems interminable now, and the weather is getting hotter and the runs are getting harder...

ladylush · 08/06/2010 21:45

Well done Kooks (on weight loss and distance) I only ran 2.43 miles.

ladylush · 08/06/2010 21:46

You will do it you know

ladylush · 10/06/2010 09:39

Did week 8 run 3 yesterday. Almost there now. Got 30 min run next. I know I can do it now. Weird feeling. Think I'll do a step class or body pump and run twice a week once I've finished the programme. I find the running quite boring but always feel good when I've finished. And it's worked wonders on my cellulite

CoupleofKooks · 10/06/2010 16:05

i know i CAN do it but i don't WANT to do it
it's long and hard and i sometimes just want it to stop
i might go out tonight and get it over with, but it's raining quite a lot
that might distract me from the misery of it all though

ladylush · 11/06/2010 09:18

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny so if you run tonight you can enjoy the sun and watch the world cup feeling supremely virtuous I aim to go tonight but think I'll need to dose up on ibuprofen today (period).
I'm too much of a wuss to up my speed this week as it nearly killed me last time (melodramatic moi).

CoupleofKooks · 11/06/2010 17:19

good luck if you go tonight
i know i should go but am really knackered
we will see

CoupleofKooks · 11/06/2010 19:05

i'm going
well as soon as i can get ds2 to fall asleep
i am posting this so i don't chicken out in a minute
3 miles here i come

CoupleofKooks · 11/06/2010 20:38

ruddy hell i have run 4.98896 km according to mapmyrun
(trust me not to do the last 0.01104)
rob's times were out again - he made me do 31 mins the bastard! but i was thinking "i am doing this and then that is IT you swine"
it was a bloody good run, i couldn't have gone any faster i don't think
it was cool and i was quite up for it
hooray!

hope you got out and had a good run lush

ladylush · 11/06/2010 21:48

Well done Kooks 31 mins Don't quibble about the 0.whatever left. You ran 5K Ashamed to say I didn't go. By the time I'd eaten, cleaned the kitchen, watched the footie it was more tempting to pour a drink than go running but I will go tomorrow morning
