hello to new people

I did 5k this morning and brave a pair of cycling shorts . I found them in a bag of pre-children clothes. I have decided I prefer leggings just over my knee as my legs sweated too much and got annoying

anyway 5k: 28:48

anyone feel like posting their playlist for running to?

I usually run to indie soup pod runner but have been experimenting with playlists in itunes and mixing up some of my songs.

I will show you mine if you show me yours

19fran76 · 05/07/2009 21:02

Hello Everyone

I have shamelessly been running in small black running shorts & I don't even care who knows about it The weather has gone to my head .

Master I've had my mind imploding at the thought of running in Kenyan heat & dust ever since I looked at some of the photos from your half marathon. Big Congratulations, inspiring stuff. Hatwoman, this is surely the challenge you
were looking for post-marathon?

Popsycal well done on your recent times. Still running without music here I'm 'fraid. However I did catch myself singing (internally) 'Have you ever ridden on a donkey, it is short & rather wonky.....' at length last Sunday when I ran 10.5 miles for the first time.

Ran 8 miles & 4 miles in the evening during the week & my new 10.5 mile route again mid morning today. Pleased to say that I'm getting round in just under 9mm.

Special hello to all newbies. I have only been running about nine months myself. Making progress is satisfying & you will - so keep it up

peachsmuggler · 06/07/2009 11:15

I did 2 runs during the week without music and struggled (though was also struggling with the heat so may have been coincidence)

Strapped on the ipod yesterday to do 9 miles for first time in ages and it was fun. Listened to 2 ABBA albums

popsy - well done on your 5k time! And here, just because we will never meet, is my sometimes shameful 10K playlist.

Crazy in Love - Beyonce
Ladyflash - The Go Team
Hung Up - Madonna
Caravan Girl - Goldfrapp
All the Things She Said - Tatu
All These Things That I have Done - The Killers
MMMBop - Hanson
If I were a Boy - Beyonce
Don't Stop Moving - S Club 7
Umbrella - Rihanna
I'm in the Mood for Dancing - The Nolans (!!!)
Wired for Sound - Cliff Richard (gawd save us)
Survivor - Destiny's Child
Whenever, Wherever - Sharkira

I will now go and hide my head in shame and we will never speak of this again.

sfxmum · 06/07/2009 11:48

I ran 4 miles on Saturday and did it in 47 minutes. I was really disappointed with this especially as DH did the same route in 37 minutes. He is a better runner than me and has run a half marathon in 2hours 10 minutes whereas I have only ran 5k and 10k races.

I am a slow runner and despite doing speed training (run fast for 100 m and walk back repeat 10 times), my speed is not increasing.

Any advice please?

Also my eclectic playlist on my ipod includes

BlackEye Peas - Pump it and Mama
Survivor - Eye of the tiger
Destiny's Child - Soldier and Lose my breath
Franz Ferdinand - Take me out
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Madonna - Hung Up
Fatback Gang - I found loving
Jocelyn Brown - Somebody Else's Guy
Sybil - The love I lost
Gossip - Standing in the way of control
Will Smith - Switch
Kanye West - Golddigga
Bootyluv - Party Tonight
Architects - Make your body move
Mavericks - Dance the night away
Jamelia - Superstar
Outkast - Hey ya
Madness - One step beyond
Teardrop Explode - Reward
Martha and the Muffins - Echo Beach
Katrina and the Waves - Walking on Sunshine

OrmIrian · 06/07/2009 12:25

spokette - I am slow too. I keep trying fartleks and that was helping until the heat started and since then I have been just about struggling round my normal routes and have given up worrying about speed! I keep increasing my distances and I think that doesn't help. I have now gone back to 6/7 mile routes and will try to do them faster.

OrmIrian · 06/07/2009 12:27

fran - I have been shamlessly sporting shorts too But I put my photo on my profile and asked the style and beauty ladies to give me the once over for advice and they didn't run screaming so I guess I'm ok.

fishie · 06/07/2009 12:29

oh i love runners playlists. i've got 5 on the go, usually featuring led zep, ac/dc and some other stuff. currently james, dolly parton, velvet underground and van halen.

fishie · 06/07/2009 12:34

spokette i am similar to orm, although i think she runs further than me usually. cannot do more than an hour / 10k in hot weather. i am not built for speed but can plod on for ages when it is cool.

haruki marakami talks about this a bit.

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 06/07/2009 12:36

I have eclectic playlists too. Will put down some of the tunes I run to later.

Did 30 min run and managed 10.59 min/mile . Obviously much faster than 11.01 min/mile would have been .

I have been running in short black shorts. Got a wolfwhistle this morning [proud].

Goldberry · 06/07/2009 12:37

Maybe I'm being weird, but I can't quite get my head around the concept of listening to music while running. I don't like the idea of not being able to hear what's going on around me. Maybe I'll give it a go though - am liking the thought of compiling running playlists.

OrmIrian · 06/07/2009 12:39

goldberry - I only tend to listen in town to shut out traffic noise. Once I get on country lanes and footpaths I take the earphones out and listen to the birds and the the wind in the trees. But sometimes on a really long hard slog music helps you along.

sfxmum · 06/07/2009 12:41

am a plodder I think fine with it although really need to build some speed work into my weekly runs
i so loved the Murakami book, loved that he talked about the difficulties and lack of motivation as well as all the obsessions

Thanks for the recommendation of the Haruki Marakami book on running and have ordered it from Amazon. I also had a look at some of his other books and have ordered South of the Border, West of the Sun.

Goldberry · 07/07/2009 12:40

Love your playlist Popsycal!

popsycal · 07/07/2009 14:02

just been out for a 40 minute run - 4.3 miles. Felt dead easy in the cooler weather

an to my playlist which now has some bee gees in too

hatwoman · 07/07/2009 14:58

Hi everyone. I'm very impressed with your organised playlists. I downloaded (uploaded?) about 30 of my cds onto my ipod and just listen on the setting that muddles them all up (can't remember what it's called.) which is fine except for the fact that the cds are quite eclectic and the ipod library thingy on my lap top is joint with dds. so sometimes it goes like this: Scissor Sisters, Keane, Dawn French reading Kipper, White Stripes, Tom Baker reading Doctor Who, Rolling Stones, Beethoven . maybe I need to get to grips with this play-list thingy.

I did a marvellous fell race last night. to the top of here - involved scrambling up a load of rocks at the top - amazing views. It was also amazing seeing a snake of runners weaving their way up there. And I'm getting a tiny bit better, I think. I'm not sure if it's a legit way of comparing races but if I work out my place as a percent - on my first one I came 91st out of a hundred, and last night I was 78th .

peachsmuggler · 11/07/2009 10:10

Am looking for some last minute inspiration from you racers out there. Got my 10k tomorrow and am going to have to run it faster than I have ever done in order to meet my target, so come and tell me your tips and tricks!

Have got my split times and am going to write them on my arm (and hopefully not sweat them off!). What do you all use to inspire you during a race?

hatwoman · 11/07/2009 13:02

hi there - I try to race people (which sounds stupid, given that it's a race, and I suppose that is the basic idea) - it's a bit hard to get right but I'll chose a person 50 yards or so infront and push myself to catch them up. if I'm making no progress in gaining on them at all, then I'll switch person (otherwise it's just demoralising) - you need someone that you can realistically gain on - but not too easily. another way of pacing/pushing yourself is to count your net place - but be warned - don;t start too early or it can be extremely demoralising - do it when the field has thinnned a bit - get a feel for what's a good target- ie something that will push you but that's achievable - tell youself you're going to move up 10, 15, places. good luck.

badgermonkey · 12/07/2009 13:00

Good luck on your 10k peachsmuggler!

Well, I did Race for Life today - managed to get myself right at the start of the runners sections and ended up coming third overall with a time of 21.15! You cannot believe how surprised I am! I'd been training at about 24mins on a good day, but starting right at the front and seeing so much clear space in front of me just gave me so much confidence, so I just went for it. Can't believe that I beat 2300 other people though (even if most of them were walking...). The two women in front of me looked like Real Runners, too.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/07/2009 13:42

That's fab badgermonkey. I bet you looked like a Real Runner too. And you are with that time!
