Thats good they are fine now - Ive had physio before for my back and still use the exercises after a gym session and so far not had any probs. I actually saw someone doingg a private lesson today and kept looking at her to see if she was nearly finished, but must have just started and didn't want to interupt. Would be good to learn properly cos even if I try I feel really silly and I have no idea what angle I am meant to have my arms at. Thats good your lessons helped, will look in to it thanks.

I can't get over the fact I am posting on a running thread I am so proud of myself!!!

blimey...new thread...how did that happen! I "watch" the other one and wondered how come it hadn't been updated!

Still running lots..doing the Bupa 10,000 in May..possibly the Great Baddow 10 mile run also in May and just signed up for the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October after spending a frustrating day online trying to get a place secured!

HI everyone
Think I am going to rejoin but am currently recovering from a broken toe...

Backgroumd: two years ago, I was a novice, running hater. Then I really got into it for the Race for Life and did a Cancer research 10k. Then I got pregnant with ds3 - born Sept 2008.

Got slowly back into running in February. I can do about 4 miles run/walk at the minute and 25 minutes continuos running. I was doing 10k contninuous running before ds3.

I was planning on doing the race for life in july but have just seen the new event of the Great North 10K in July and am pondering whether that is achievable

giraffes, as a girl in Africa I've been thinking and ds1 made me think too this morning,that giraffes actually possibly could run 10k, if you frightenend them enough. We are going to the Masai Mara this weekend, so I will let you know what our research reveals.

you sound like me popsycal...started off doing Race for Life..then moved onto the Cancer Research 10K...just got the bug!

sounds like you are quite capable of 10K in July ..broken toe permitting! (ouch!)

Hi themasterandmargarita well done on fitting in so many k's run.
For me, I would say one long run weekly (gradually building up from 10k up to around 17/18k) and one or two shorter runs. I was advised (by hubby who is forest gump ) to use one shorter run for intervals - alternating a faster pace with a slower pace e.g 1min fast 2mins slower recovery. Apparently this helps those "twitching" muscles which in turn helps improve overall speed.

Hi folks. Do you mind if I join? I started running in January and promised myself I could join the thread (and buy some flashy running tights ) when I could run 5k without expiring!

I'm doing the Edinburgh marathon team relay (5 mile leg) at the end of May and would also quite like to do some fell running in time as I used to orienteer a lot. Although fell runners are generally scarily wiry-looking people...and I'm not.....

anyhow I really need to get into gear and find a race I reckon it would give me a boost just to finish
am in comfy land but really ought to do better and push harder.

Clure, thanks for the reassurance, I need to get a realistic training programme in place, from what I have read I need to be running at least 4 times a week?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Blimey, new thread and loads of posts already.

I've been lurking but not posting because I haven't been doing much running recently, but am back in the groove again now after a lovely run last night.

Congrats to all the race runners recently, there has been loads! I'm jealous, have had to pull out of two races because of my various injuries.

Getting better now though, have started to do pilates, and also have had to accept what my limits are - my legs just aren't up to the kind of mileage I was trying to do (either that or did too much too soon).

Twink, so pleased you all had a fantastic holiday, sounds brilliant. Good news on the running too.

Sfxmum, are there any 10ks local to you coming up? You'd be able to do one no problem!

Hello all to all the new runners. Such a lovely time of year to be out running, I'm so glad the winter is over and the evenings are light.

Hello liath How about this race near Glasgow? It looks FUN!

Fist night back at my running club now the clocks have gone forward. They started it with a 5k time trial.

I didn't think I would be very fast because I'm not feeling very fit at the moment, but I did it in 26.38, only 34 secs slower than my PB last season

Saw the Carnethy 5 on the Adventure Show and thought that looked fun. Am doing a 20 mile fell race in the Cheviots in July but have opted for the walking option!

inthe mistoftime I was only doing a 5-7k run with intervals built in and a longer run at the weekend building up to 19k gradually. I also do a spin and bodypump class weekly alongside the running. It got me through the half marathon. I think another run would have been beneficial too. Have you checked out www.runnersworld.co.uk/defaulttraining.asp?sp=&v=3 you can do yourself a personal training plan depending on your ability and distance you want to run

I bought some new running shoes yesterday so I wil pop out for a quick one this evening.

A new running shop opened up here recently and it is fantastic

Went on a treadmill and everything. They were so thorough. All that and the shoes I ended up with (Saucony Progrid Ride) were only £40 (plus a 10% running club discount)

wallace I used to get Acsis but kept getting the problem of toe making holes through he front mesh, so I bought some cheap Saucony Grid and they have been great will get a second pair soon

not been running since Wednesday but will go tomorrow morning I hope

sfx - my old ones were asics and my toes were just starting to make a hole - the guy in the shop said they have solved that problem on the new models.
My old asics were making my feet go numb so I'm glad I got something different. All the asics I tried on seemed really narrow.

Went for a lovely run early this morning - 8 miles. The weather was so beautiful and the scenery is unbeatable.
It was one of those runs where you have a smile on your face the whole time

I have now entered the Dunfermline Half on 10th May. And the Aviemore half in October. I did that last year and it was fantastic.

evening runners

i have a question - do you all run races, or is there anyone here who just, well, runs?

i've worked my way up from couch to 5k but it seems the next step is to start entering/training for races, and tbh i can't think of anything i'd less like to do . i've read lots on running boards about having goals and targets and whatnots, but i'm sooo not a type-a personality and i just like the feeling of running (well, quite often it's more the feeling of having run ).

my initial motivations were for physical and mental health and vanity/weight loss/being able to eat more, and it's ticking all my boxes there. so i wondered how those of you who don't race maintain motivation. i have to say i have obvious withdrawal when i can't get out to run, so i have a fairly good motivation right there, but i'd welcome any extra tips.

milenif that could be me actually I run because it keeps me sane, vital headspace and keeps me fit, the thought of races makes me anxious but I plan on doing at least one this summer, if it definitely is not for me then at least I would have tried.
I crave the exercise and suffer withdrawal if I go for a week without running at all, I like giving myself small goals of distance speed etc just for fun but really keeping sane is motivation enough, best cure foe depression ever

wallace to be safe I think I will stick to the Saucony maybe get a pair of Brooks Adrenaline my local shop also recomended, had heard the toe poking was a common problem

could not go today but tomorrow dd is at nursery so I will finally run, sore throat and all

oh i'm so glad i'm not alone sfxmum, i was beginning to wonder if people only kept going by racing, in which case i'd be screwed cos i really can't imagine ever wanting to run a race (although i suppose a few months back i couldn't imagine ever running either). i'll keep an eye out if you report back on a race, i'd be interested to hear how you find it, we seem to be on the same wavelength

I generally don't race; probably do one a year. I've been running for around 10 years now and find I don't need races for motivation. I feel like sfxmum - knowing what good it does me is enough.

HI all, can i join you.

I started running after ds1, di a couple of cancer uk 10K , then had ds2, started a again, a couple of 10K and am now trying to build up to half marathon. Trouble is, I find fitting in longer runs a problem. At the mo I go circuit training once a week and try to fit a couple of 4-5 miles runs a week, but as I can only go when dh is home, ( evenings or weekends)I find doing any more tricky. How can I build up to half marathon level? Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

mileniwmffalcon, if you don't want to race you can still build up your distances as a goal, now you are at 5K you can aim for 10K, the only thing I would say about racing is that you could just race once a year and use that as a training goal and to see how you are getting on in terms of times/speed.

Another thought about racing is that you will never push yourself as hard during a normal run as you will during a race so it might be interesting to enter one just to see what your body is capable of and the times you could achieve.
