Wallace · 04/07/2009 10:26

Well done

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/07/2009 10:40

Hey Well Done Popsy!

Especially on avoiding the tactical walk - sometimes planning for it means you do it even though you don't really need to I find.

sfxmum · 04/07/2009 11:14

well done popsy

very sweaty couple of miles today dh had to go to work and I did not wake up early enough, btw drinking a couple of glasses of wine the night before not a good idea at my age

definitely going further tomorrow

Well done popsy!

I think I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with my tendonitis, it's feeling a lot better. Probably won't be running for another couple of weeks but am hoping I can do some cross training at the gym and that I haven't lost too much fitness!

I was supposed to be doing the Chevy Chase in the cheviot hills today which would have been glorious in this weather .

Themasterandmargaritas · 04/07/2009 17:10

Popsy that is brilliant, well done you!

peachsmuggler · 04/07/2009 18:05

Nice one Popsy!

Am planning 9 miles tomorrow mormning and hoping it is a little cooler!

Hello, i have come over to join you guys in the hope of some advice, Twink told me i should come and join you guys!

I decided to start running, and went out on my first run 11 days ago. I am following a programme for complete beginers but started on week 2 as i walk for approx 2 hours a day so felt i didn't need to that bit iykwim.

I have been following plan to the letter running 5 days out of 7 and increasing times slowly. Here is my question, according to my plan today i should have anohter increase so i am doing 5 minutes of walking to 4 minutes of running for 30 minutes. I have just got back but i struggled to do 2 miuntes of running but i find 5 minutes of walking too long so have been doing 4.
Why can't run for longer? yesterday i was comfortably running for 2.40 and walking for 4. Am i expecting too much?

Can i havae any tips on how to increase running time, because apparently next wednesday i am supposed to be able to do 5 and 5, that doesn't seem achievable at this time. I am startin to worry that i am going to fail at this and really don't want to

I NEED HELP! (sorry to shout but i am desperate and have AF today!)

sfxmum · 04/07/2009 21:39

hi morethan I am not as experienced as some here but when I went back to running after dd I started with run/ walk too I never did more than 2min walk after the 2nd week and moved on from there 2walk 2run, then 2walk 3run, then started shortening the walks to 1min walk every 5 min run etc it worked for me
there are a few plans out there
and about AF running seriously helps before and during imo
hope that is somewhat helpful

OP posts:
sfxmum · 04/07/2009 21:40

and you are not going to fail before you know it you will be doing races

OP posts:
morethanyoubargainfor · 04/07/2009 21:52

Thanks SFXmum, do you think so? I have to keepreminding self that i have only done 9 actual running sessions don't I! before last week i hadn't run for about 15 years!

I must remember to walk before i can run so to speak!

Maybe tommorrow i will try 2 mins walking and the same running that seems doable to me.

I agree about Af being better with running, it was a total surprise to me this month, normally i am unable to move for 48 hours before i start but this month was sooo much better!

sfxmum · 04/07/2009 22:11

I think when you get to run 3min walk 1min it gets easier you don't have to run fast at this point but even if you do 2/2 7x is quite good imo
soon you will be able to run walk for about 40 min so really that should take you to about 5K

and you go on from there, I remember clearly the sense of achievement after being able to run10m it is so addictive

Goldberry · 04/07/2009 22:20

Hello all. Can I join in too? Started running for the first time after 2nd dc (now 15 months) partly in an effort to lower persistent post-preg high blood pressure. Entered my first 5k last month and have put myself down for a 10k in September. I'm finding it hard to imagine making it to 10k though, and am also finding I don't want to run in this hot weather. More motivation needed...

morethanyoubargainfor · 04/07/2009 22:32

Would that be the Latitude SFXmum?

If it is then you will have a fab time, have been with my Ds and he loved it too.

Thanks, i am going try 2/2 tommorrow and take it from there, as i do find 4 mins walking quiet tedious and far too long.

sfxmum · 04/07/2009 22:38

yes have been 3yrs running good for children

let us know how you get on

goldberry hi I did 5k recently and planning on 10K in early October

OP posts:
morethanyoubargainfor · 04/07/2009 22:42

Will do.

Thanks for advice.

liath · 05/07/2009 08:21

Morethanyoubargainfor I have found that my running can be really crap around the time of my AF - leaden legs, can't run far etc. Maybe that's having an effect on you just now.

I only started in January and speaking as someone now sidelined with a tendonitis common in people who overtrain my advice would be to take things slowly and if in doubt repeat a week rather than push yourself on to the next level!

peachsmuggler · 05/07/2009 10:27

morethan - Welcome! How fast are you running? When I first started running I tried to go too fast and couldn't keep it up. Try doing the running bits even slower than you are at the moment and you should hopefully be able to keep going for longer. It will help your confidence and mean than you can stick to your training plan and you can worry about increasing your speed at a later date.

goldberry - Totally know what you mean, I think everyone feels like this when they start. You cannot imagine the next milestone when you have just reached your first, but honestly, you'll be doing 10k in no time! Good luck!!

sfxmum · 05/07/2009 12:22

liath makes a good point especially as in the beginning it is easy to be lazy about warming up and stretching properly

feel a bit happier today as I managed to go further as planned hopefully will do 6 miles next weekend

hope everyone is well

morethanyoubargainfor · 05/07/2009 15:16

hi,

Thanks peachsmuggler, i think i naturaually run quite fast, (the same with walking). i literaaly run at a pace that is comfortable. I go out for about 30 mins and cover a distance of just over 3KM with 4 mins walking and 2-3mins running. My pedometer/timer thing tells me on average i take 4200 steps in that time.

I have tried to run slower but then i feel like my knee is going to give way IYKWIM. it sort of wobbles about, but then my legs tense up so i end up having to have a chat to myself about relaxing my legs which at times can prove quite difficult.

I warm up by a 10 min fast pace walk and cool down by walking for 5 then stretching for a while afterwards.

morethanyoubargainfor · 05/07/2009 16:59

Hurrah! thanks for advice,

Just got back from run, decided to take the 2/2 approach and it felt so much better. I was out for 45 mins and ran for about 18 minutes of that, as the last bit home is very difficult to run on.

I feel very proud of myself, and felt like i could have kept going.

I am now going to stick to that for a few days and then try to increase running time. if i find i really can't do it then i shall stick with2/2 for another couple of days because as you have all pointed out it really doesn't matter about speed etc at the mo.

I also had lunch about an hour before i left and drunk alot of water, so that might have helped as well.

i will keep you posted on progress!

Twink · 05/07/2009 17:14

Just noticed an email from Less Bounce, they've got Shock Absorber running tights on a BOGOF here

Apparently they stop wobbly bits

Goldberry · 05/07/2009 20:00

Thanks for the encouragement Peachsmuggler. Just been out for a run for the first time this week and feel all the better for it. I need to increase my running time and the number of runs per week from now on if I'm going to make it to that 10k.
