Hello I havent posted on mumsnet for ages but have started running in the last year and like the look of this thread - can I join?!

I did the 10k race for life in July and managed to run the whole thing - although in just over an hour, would have liked to do it in under 60mins. But that's the first time I'd done an organised run so really I am pleased that I have learned a new skill at 46. Now I think I would like to try and speed up but it will be hard as I am not fast at anything - walking, swimming etc aI can keep going for a while but am not a sprinter.

I run by myself because I find it hard to predict when I will have time to go out, not sure I could manage a club although I guess it may be what I need. (And i also can't imagine running without music)

At the moment I have a sore back so daren't run, which is annoying as I will be back at work next week and would like to make the most of my time up till then.

[Hello Moondog you gave me some helpful advice a few years ago]

Anyway I look forward to dipping into this thread when I get time.

Hi, I aimed for 7 last night but did a measly 6. I had eaten really well all day, but my legs were just so sluggish! I am cross. I could have walked quicker!

please help me? xxxxxx

hatwoman · 29/08/2009 00:21

quick wave to everyone, including newbies. I'm still here. still running. I'm reading a great book about training that's got me all inspired to be a bit more systematic about it all. I'm a complete tick-the-miles-off plodder. But my new resolution is to set myself a proper schedule with some interval training and see if I can actually get faster. did a tough fell race on Wednesday with my whippet/moutain-goat like friend. I'll never catch her but I need to make a bit of an effort to close the gap. hope everyone's well.

liath · 29/08/2009 08:27

Popsycal, did you know they're doing a half marathon next year at the Edinburgh Marathon? I'm going to do the relay again, hopefully.

Pigging tendonitis still not 100% after 3 months now! Very frustrating. I'm only running very short distances still and going to the gym a lot to try and keep my fitness up. Grrr. Hope everyone else's hurty bits are getting better.

moondog · 29/08/2009 13:37

Hello Soya, long time, no see!

Does anyone know where I can download music at a specified beats per minute? I want something sort of long and trancy. I always run with music and choose favourite songs but increasingly find that these aren;t necessarily good to run to-too fast or too slow and I get caught up in the verse, chorus, verse, chorus thing.

I want to get sort of hypnotised by it [heeeeeey]. Nearest I come so far is with some Grace Jones or Led Zepp.

Back in Wales now so off out shortly to see how my lung capacity has developed while I was away.

soyabean · 29/08/2009 16:31

Hi Moondog I sometimes look on www.jogtunes.com/ and I think you can link straight through to Amazon to download although I just look for tracks that we already have on the computer. When I am feeling superkeen and a little geeky I use www.mixmeister.com/bpmanalyzer/bpmanalyzer.asp to run stuff I have on the pc through and pick out any that are the right tempo.

I have to say I have what I thought was a great playlist but i am so fed up of it now that I just tend to listen to whatever I fancy, whatever the beat.

popsycal · 29/08/2009 18:30

quite a bitof stuff for freeon itunes

moondog · 30/08/2009 15:44

Thanks ladies.
Will peruse.

I did my first ever 5k under 30 mins (29 mins 15 secs.) yesterday. Nothing to you experts but I was pretty chuffed.

A shame I am now throwing a party and will undo all my good work.

soyabean · 31/08/2009 17:46

Hello all. I have managed about 5k and 8k in the lsat few days, so am quite pleased about that. I seem to be able to do 5k in about 30 mins but just cant go over 7k or so without a walk, so 10k takes about 70 mins (although I managaged to run it all on the racefor life!) I excuse myself on the grounds that most of my 8k- 10k routes are a bit hilly...

popsycal · 31/08/2009 20:33

rubbish 5andabitK run today in 35 minutes. Was gpoing to do 12 miles this weekend (intermediate half marathon plan) then relegated it to 10k (beginners marathioon plan) for a variety of reasons. Then it absolutely POURED down and i think I amgetting another hideous ear infection so a slow 5ishK

popsycal · 31/08/2009 20:34

oh liath - I REALLY fancy the edinburgh marathon relay!!!!!

MrsWednesday · 31/08/2009 20:57

Back from holiday with some new trainers and a rested hip - managed two very slow and steady miles today. Am going to start building up the miles again.

fishie · 31/08/2009 21:09

hello all. md re llyn i spent much time in sea or going on railways so only a few little runs on pavements, but it was such fun as everyone was very friendly, waving bus drivers! and wonderful to be looking at mountains.

have you tried the indie soup runner podcasts? once you get past the unfamiliarity of the songs (they are mainly new to me) they are very good for zoning out. i am also led zep fan and some of r. plant's solo work is good to run to.

twink 20m! do you run every day? how is mr twink i have been thinking of you.

popsycal · 31/08/2009 21:14

indie soup runnerpodcast - agree - they are good

sfxmum · 31/08/2009 23:11

hello all
definitely indie soup runner love it here

did 4miles in 48mins must really do some proper training and speedwork
there is a local 10k where I usually do my running but only with PBs of 40 to 80 mins

hope everyone is well

Twink · 31/08/2009 23:41

Hi all, I love this thread, you really cheer me up with your exploits, even when you don't think you've done well, you're still doing better than 90% of the population!

Managed a head clearing 1.5 hours yesterday while the District Nurse was in for the daily visit with Mr T but unfortunately I've just got back from our local hospital having failed in my attempts to be allowed to bring him home - had to take him in earlier today as high temp + chemo = intravenous antibiotics Still, on the bright side, it's the first time he's had a major infection in 9 cycles of chemo so being a tough cookie must have helped. That's a pretty good reason for us all to keep running!

Themasterandmargaritas · 01/09/2009 08:59

Twink, as ever you are a marvel with your ongoing optimism. Wishing mr Twink a speedy battle with his infection and hope he is soon home again.

sfxmum · 01/09/2009 10:38

new thread

just because it is nice to hear from all of you

Twink hope mrT fights this one too
encouragement by example indeed
