Third year for me aiming to be as active as possible most days. So join me in setting a goal and keeping on track by logging on here Smile. I’ve set a 500mile run target this year to be realistic as I’ve nursed foot issues most of 2021 which really curtailed my running miles but sea swimming and trail running have developed into my passions. What’s your challenge this year?

A little from column A, a little from Column B. If you're already a healthy weight for your height, then stronger legs will be more achievable than trying to lose weight from an already small body.

My FTP is 2.91 currently and I know it'll get better over the year. I'm working from a TrainerRoad training plan because Lockdown over here (ROI) won't get any better before mid-summer.

SSwimCycle21 · 13/03/2021 10:09

Windy spin out on bike this morning, went to look at swim spot but decided not to go in as tide had turned and with strong winds it wasn’t worth the risk.

Running 201km
Swimming 8km
Cycling 264km

SSwimCycle21 · 13/03/2021 10:10

What’s FTP? How do you measure it??

SheWasWalking · 13/03/2021 11:55

Sorry to intrude, please can I have your opinion on Strava challenges and their privacy (or lack of) requirements.

I started a thread on FWR, but I'd like the runners to weigh in if poss.

Thanks!

FTP - Functional Threshold Power - in brief how long you can hold a particular power figure for an hour without blowing up. It's a useful metric to base your training on. There are plenty of articles online about FTP and how to measure it.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2021 17:27

10.1km

405.6 walked
35 rowed

SSwimCycle21 · 13/03/2021 20:41

Thanks longrider I will google to find out more Smile

drspouse · 13/03/2021 23:58

Only a few k walking here - "resting" apparently according to the cycle training plan.

LaLaLanded · 14/03/2021 07:43

Happy weekend, all.

My knee has been giving me all sorts of trouble - not sure what it is, not a standard IT band issue which is usually what happens doing lots of stretches and strength work. I really want the gym to open back up though - having a treadmill for tempo runs, and the leg machines, will make such a difference.

Think I’ve done 33km since last posting, now on 534.9km/2021km running.

Also, I’m getting a bike! I need a method of cross training that keeps fitness up and am tinkering with the idea of triathlons... because why not... looks like there are a few triathloners (?) here!

SSwimCycle21 · 14/03/2021 09:11

Windy Cycle and sea dip this morning.

Running 201km
Swimming 8.2km
Cycling 279km

tizwozliz · 14/03/2021 11:01

5.5 km this morning, felt horrible, legs like lead. Previous weeks it's always felt like my lungs were the limiting factor but today it definitely felt like my legs.

145.5km total

officelady · 14/03/2021 11:45

Lost my running mojo a bit recently but am hoping that it will return soon!
Did 5k this morning on legs that felt like lead. I know it is only because my fitness has vanished due to lack of regular exercise.
In the hope of generating some motivation, this morning I signed up to a virtual challenge to run 400k through Kruger National Park - you could choose a time period in which to complete, I am aiming for 25 weeks. The finishers medal is lovely so I am determined to complete this challenge.

112.3km total.

TheLongRider · 14/03/2021 15:43

165km this week between cycling and walking.

HapHap · 14/03/2021 16:00

367km running

I'm trying to hit 505km by the end of March for a Garmin badge but I don't think I can quite get there!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/03/2021 18:25

Foul weather today so 5km on the rower

405.6 walked
40 rowed

FrangipaniBlue · 14/03/2021 18:55

@SSwimCycle21

What’s FTP? How do you measure it??
If you have a turbo trainer and Zwift or similar you can do an FTP test.

Their are training plans aswell you can follow to improve it.

The higher your FTP the stronger your legs are for cycling... in theory!

drspouse · 14/03/2021 23:37

Only went out of the house to go to the priority post box (antigen test) but got my 10k steps in tidying up and calming down wound up DCs who SHOULD have gone out despite the rain.

Ringsender2 · 15/03/2021 11:50

Morning all. I am beginning to think my aims are rather unrealistic! Have been v v busy last few weeks so finding it hard to get any decent runs or walks in, and my wfh/5km limit means I don't need to cycle much! Need to be better at planning, but there are so many pinch-points during the day (kids schooling, meetings, meals etc. More meals, making of, feeding people... you know the drill!)

in last fortnight: walk 82km, run 56km, cycle 5km. I did do a 12.5km yesterday, so was quite pleased about that. Lots of it was uphill into the wind too ()

running totals
walk: 492/3500
run 106/1000
cycle 22/1000

@tizwozliz - I'm impressed by your speed! I'm definitely slow and steady - my fastest 5km was at 6:35 per km and my fastest 10km was 7:05 km. A plodder alright. I'm trying to keep below HR 155 bpm and keep going for longer.

thanks for this thread @TriSeaSwim99 and everyone. Great to have an overall aim for the year (even if I am likely to downgrade it!)

tizwozliz · 15/03/2021 12:22

@Ringsender2 - I had a reasonable level of fitness from swimming when I started running this year so I wasn't starting from cold as it were. I'd like to do a flat course as my splits are quite varied due to the inclines on the routes I do (I can either go up for the first half and down for the second half, or down for the first half and up for the second half). Slow and steady just doesn't work for me, I start getting all sorts of niggles, so I run a km and then walk for 20 seconds, this is faster overall for me than just running so I'm not going to get hung up on continuous running. I'm finding the whole running thing quite frustrating to be honest, as my body can't really keep up with the amount I would like to do. Can't wait to get some miles in in the pool where i can exercise for a full hour and don't have to think about rest days or stretches or anything else afterwards.

I'm getting my Covid vaccination tomorrow so trying to decide if i should get a run in today in case i feel crappy afterward.

tizwozliz · 15/03/2021 12:25

Must admit, I do like the way Fitbit represents the elevation profile of my run, it truly does feel like this sometimes!

Run / Walk / Swim / Cycle 1000km / miles in 2021 here we go again!
Ringsender2 · 15/03/2021 12:35

love it! Everest, innit? Or Ben Nevis at least Grin

drspouse · 15/03/2021 13:03

That's some Y axis!

SSwimCycle21 · 15/03/2021 13:22

Total of 10.2km trail run this morning split with dog walk plus a 20mins weights/hitt thing at 7am. I peed off with myself as I’d maintained my weight since Aug but in the last 3-4wks I’ve been eating more crap & carbs and gained 4lbs so I need to cut the cycle over this week and get back on track as for the first time in years I had got a good eating/fasting routine going and I’ve let it slide!

Running 211.2km
Swimming 8.2km
Cycling 279km

drspouse · 15/03/2021 14:42

14k bike, must try and work out how to get my Strava rides (more accurate for e bikes) on to Runkeeper to update my total for the year.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2021 14:51

9.6 km by the river, gorgeous sunshine so the return was bare armed.Smile

415.2 walked
40 rowed
