New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

@UnaOfStormhold brrr - and laughing at the mincing! My icy run yesterday was the same.

Thank you for the tip - I will take a look.

PaddingtonPaddington · 29/12/2020 16:50

Lovely pics @emummy

Well done @UnaOfStormhold

@50FootWave I was just about to recommend James Dunne (Kinetic Revolution). I followed the strength training during my ultra training earlier this year doing 4 sessions a week alongside 5 runs a week. Definitely worked though.

Quick 5K today. 1 min off my PB so pretty happy with that considering the time of year.

Amazing, thanks, @PaddingtonPaddington (ultra running, I'm in awe!).

James Dunne it is...

Spudlet · 29/12/2020 19:34

5k done here today, far too chilly to do much more than that! Was very glad of my warmest top. I also tried my new calf sleeves to see if they helped my niggly legs, not sure if they did or not to be honest Grin

Hello! I’m a newbie. I haven’t been running for a year or so decided that as I have a big birthday looming in the spring, I had to prove to myself I could still do it. Anyway, I forced myself out this afternoon for a 5k run and managed it in 32 mins . Was quite chuffed as I was never much faster 15 years ago when I got to 10k in 63 mins. I’ve had a bath and will wait and see what bits of me fall off in the morning!

50FootWave · 30/12/2020 06:21

@Benjispruce2 that's incredible. Well done!

It's thick ice outside so I'll run at lunchtime today - I prefer first thing but the icy run I had on Monday was a nightmare, so best be sensible...

Benjispruce2 · 30/12/2020 08:59

Ah thanks @50FootWave. I’d like to shift about 7lbs. I eat pretty healthily and am a big walk my dog a lot so I think my base level of fitness isn’t too bad but to shift a bit of weight before the big 50, would 3 runs a week be enough?

50FootWave · 30/12/2020 11:30

I would certainly think so, @Benjispruce2. Especially if you are already eating healthily and walking loads.

I lose quickly on low carb, but it's no everyone's cup of tea.

DS and I have had a walk, ice looks gone, so will nip out for a fast-as-I-can 5km now...

dubyalass · 30/12/2020 12:38

Just managed a very slow 5.5k but that's the first time I've done that distance and I could probably have done another 1k before collapsing. Feeling v pleased with myself and actually really enjoyed it.

I know what you mean about the mincing - that was me up a nearby muddy track a few days ago!

50FootWave · 30/12/2020 12:38

Urgh. Running this late doesn't suit me.

A slow 35 mins 5km as the seafront was PACKED and I couldn't get going.

Back to 6.30am and the ice tomorrow!

Also had an icy run this am. Was very pretty but slippy. Tried to run ‘easy’ using my heart rate. Meant I was super slow. Wasn’t a run - more of a shuffle!! Unfortunately despite the slow run my legs are still very sore after a weights workout yesterday. My quads hate me every time I go down the stairs!

Just did c25k w8r3 and ran over 5k! Still can't quite believe it Grin. Week 9 here I come!

Benjispruce2 · 30/12/2020 17:00

Just joined Club Tier 4 so not much else to do but run. Rest today but 5k dog walk. Actually looking forward to tomorrow’s NYE run!

50FootWave · 31/12/2020 07:45

Well done @Ralphiesaurus - what a great feeling!

I need to do a medium run today - 7km - but it's just so icy out there, so will go at lunch time instead again....I'll try a different route today, hopefully less busy...

Theimpossiblegirl · 31/12/2020 10:42

Sorry to jump in, but I've been using endomondo and it stops tonight. I've looked at map my run but it's not as good imo. What do people use to track their runs? Strava didn't seem great in my risk area, it kept losing GPS.
I did c25k in the summer and love running now, it's really helping with my mental health as well as physical.
Thanks in advance.

Theimpossiblegirl · 31/12/2020 10:42

*rural area
No risk other then Badgers and potholes.

Iamblossom · 31/12/2020 11:12

7km with my friend this morning.... Brrrrrrr, chilly!! Very glad of my running gloves.

I find that the GPS on your phone is quite inaccurate, so I’d recommend getting a cheap gps watch. Then just sync to Strava.

A lot seemed to have happened. Hello to all the newbies, I got very excited seeing it was minus temperatures last night, meaning I could run on some trail this morning.

Three 10kms over the past 48 hrs dwhich I’ll regret as it’s the club (virtual) handicap tomorrow.

Well done @dubyalass and @Ralphiesaurus, great running!
@Theimpossiblegirl I have a Garmin watch and just use their app to track runs. I have used MapMyRun in the past, it was ok.
Hope your quads have recovered @Purpleraindeer!
Soggy trail run today in the rain, with long icy stretches on the trails for added entertainment! Good excuse to not run fast. It’s raining steadily here but the gritters are all out so they must know something we don’t! Added up my miles for the year, 870, which is my lowest for a while but not really a surprise this year, with no races and working/doing a masters. Happy I’ve been able to keep running.

662 miles this year for me.

50FootWave · 31/12/2020 13:10

An 8am still icy but at least I could spot it 4 miles for me. Rest day tomorrow then upping my long run to 10km on Sat.

@Theimpossiblegirl I do the same as @emummy - cheap watch which is synced to my phone. Basic but that's all I need. I'll try and find a link...

Well done everyone!

Spudlet · 31/12/2020 13:26

@Theimpossiblegirl I use a Garmin Forerunner 10 at the moment - it was £20 on eBay, and you can get them for less than that. You have to plug it into a computer to sync it but it’s pretty reliable. I’ve used it for a year now, about to pass it onto DH as I’m upgrading. But I’d definitely recommend it as a dipping a toe into running watches watch!

4 miles today, along one of my favourite routes. It’s very flat here generally but this one takes in the long spine of a hill so you get a great view, and it ends going around a ruined castle, which is beautiful. My knee is a bit niggly but not too bad - I think I need to work on my quads a bit to support it. I’ve done 418 miles this year in total, which I’m quite pleased with when you allow for injury and homeschooling and suchlike. Now roll on 2021!

@Theimpossiblegirl I've got a:

LETSCOM Smart Watch which was £37 on Amazon. But I'd take @Spudlet 's advice, and go with a second-hand Foreunner - I've only run with mine a few times, so not sure yet how accurate/durable it is...

Lovely looking run, @Spudlet!

emummy · 31/12/2020 14:37

That looks gorgeous @Spudlet!

That’s the way into the castle - it was all locked up today but I took a picture through the gate. When the village shop is open you can borrow the key and go in - there isn’t much left but it’s a great place for a picnic.
