New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

Hello, can anyone join in? 10k done so far this month, so that’s 6 miles to add to the total. 5k with ddog who is rather old, so it was a slow affair with walk breaks. And 5k solo today, which was going well until I met a lady with a very excitable dog and had to stop to avoid being leapt all over and then for some polite chat as she was quite embarrassed and apologetic. It was nice to chat but it completely broke my rhythm and I kept stopping after that. Quite annoyed with myself as I reckon I’d have been close to a PB, or at least closer than I’ve been for ages, but never mind.

So if I add my miles - 25.9

emummy · 03/12/2020 14:21

Everyone welcome @Spudlet! I know what you mean about your rhythm being broken. PB next time!

Hello, can I join please? I am only relatively new to running but I'm doing 5k every other day now, unfortunately as I've got young children I mostly have to run on the treadmill. I can't seem to get my 5k time less than 32 mins, will it come in time? I finished c25k in September but was only getting to 4.5k in the 30 mins so have pressed on and now can easily do the 5k but quite slow I think.

pomegranatefizz · 03/12/2020 15:34

Intervals done again yesterday, on the treadmill at the gym this time, hurrah!

Can anyone tell me with intervals is it normal for your overall pace to be slower? Eg I run 5k in about 29 minutes but when I'm doing intervals (1m fast as poss, 1.30 jog and repeat) it's more like 31/32 mins. Assuming because I'm having to slow down a LOT to recover after each sprint?

Just seems that logically I'm running faster but I guess for more of it I'm actually running slower 😂

pomegranatefizz · 03/12/2020 15:35

Ooops nearly forgot

Welcome @EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide! You will usually gradually get faster as time goes on; you’ve not been running long and 32 minutes is pretty good!
@pomegranatefizz the slow recovery phase will make your overall time slower, so don’t worry about that. It’s the pace you manage during the intervals that matters.

Thank you @emummy I am going to make it my aim to shave a minute off my time this month 😂

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 04/12/2020 07:53

I've only just twigged with the numbers, are people really running 400+ miles a month?! How many times a week and how many miles each run? I'm in total awe, I don't even drive that many miles a month 😂

Spudlet · 04/12/2020 08:12

I think it’s a cumulative total for everyone on the thread? I was a bit intimidated by it too to start, I thought they were people’s individual totals as well and that I was slacking Grin

SophieGiroux · 04/12/2020 09:00

Hi, another newbie here! Have started to do couch to 5k again and am halfway through week 6. I ran previously before dd2 and was doing 5k's but not at a particularly high speed around 35 min. Hoping to improve this time so have been going out every couple of days in the dark (so no one sees me! Grin)
I was wondering what you wear for when the weather is really cold? I get really hot while running so end up just running with a vest and leggings even if it's 5°c! Feels great at the time but last night I felt so cold and shivery when I got back and had to sleep with my dressing gown on and fleecy pyjamas and socks! I do have a long sleeved running top but feel so hot when wearing it. My bp gets to around 180bpm so may be pushing it too much but feel like I'm too slow otherwise. Any tips gratefully received Smile

TheBumbleNums · 04/12/2020 09:09

@SophieGiroux I read an interesting blog article for a company which makes extreme cold weather sports clothing (running, skiing, in Nordic countries etc). They said most runners over dress in colder weather- you should dress for being comfortable on the second half of your run. In fact it said that it’s better to be slightly freezing for the first ten minutes or so, and then you’ll warm up and be fine. It also recommended wearing thinner clothing and layering up- so a warm thin base layer, a running top/t-shirt and a gilet or jacket. You can add or remove layers as needed.

I for one am glad it’s finally getting colder where I am- I generally am quite a hot person so I’ve found running almost unbearable this year with the heat in the summer and the milder autumn we’ve had.

emummy · 04/12/2020 14:26

The numbers are the total for all of us, so you can add each run you do onto the previous total. I don’t think any of us are doing 400 miles a month - I think I peaked at around 150 when I was marathon training!
I like wearing layers in the cold @SophieGiroux; so I have a fleecy warm pair of leggings if it’s below freezing outside and normal leggings if not. I often wear at shirt with a pair of arm warmers so I can take them off if I get too hot. I wear a gilet a lot, they’re great I think, and would add a long sleeved top over the T-shirt if it’s below freezing. That way I can take bits on & off according to how I feel.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 04/12/2020 14:47

Thank goodness for that 😂my maths isn't great but it works out at about a half marathon daily!
Was feeling a tiny bit inferior, what a wally.

IRun4Me · 04/12/2020 18:11

Hello all new people and welcome.
I would never make 400 miles in a month. Sometimes I struggle to get 40!! The only time I’ve got over 100 is doing RED January.
A cold wet run with a very reluctant dog. But at least the snow had gone. Had to dig out the gloves for the first time in ages.

IRun4Me · 04/12/2020 18:14

I layer aswell. I get very warm on a run. I’ve only just started wearing leggings as opposed to shorts this week. I like a zip front jacket which I can open to let air in when warm. I’m often running along and removing layers as I go.

SophieGiroux · 04/12/2020 19:25

Thanks @TheBumbleNums and @emummy for the tips. I definitely think it might be wise to at least wear a thin base layer covering my arms so I'm not as cold after I finish next time.

It’s learning temperatures for you. I know 6 degrees and above is shorts and t-shirt weather and I take 1 mile to get warm through to my fingertips. 4-6 I’ll tend to go knee length then maybe a T-shirt instead of vest and below that take out layers I know I can remove and tie round my waist, Then switch to leggings (initially thin and then thick). Windy means T-shirt and gloves - assuming I have a pocket to stash in.

I do find though that once I get cold after a run I have to shower quickly to get rid of it, otherwise it stays.

Been tired this week, work still busy but back to various children club car runs

27 miles to add scattered over 4 runs. Hopefully will get my 10km in tomorrow but will be a slog

TheBumbleNums · 05/12/2020 10:16

I don’t know why I said I’m glad it’s getting colder where I am. Temp took a nose dive here yesterday so it was only 3 degrees when I went out for my run at 6pm. It was bloody cold! It’s been consistently around 12 degrees so yesterday was a shock! Still, managed to force 3 miles out of my cold numbed legs! 6 miles to add this week so far

TheBumbleNums · 05/12/2020 10:17

Ooops messed up the numbers!

PaddingtonPaddington · 05/12/2020 15:55

I’m usually hot running so go for the minimum kit and only buy leggings with big pockets so can shove my gloves in them if I get too warm!

Don’t worry about overall time for intervals, you’re supposed to recover in the intervals so if that means walking then it will increase your time. Intervals are really good to improve your PB but are not supposed be a PB themselves.

Cold but sunny run managing to avoid the rain.

Steady run today, in sleet for first half then sun came out & defrosted me a bit!

Joining please!

I've done C25K multiple times and completed it last year ish ago I think and since then have been running on and off with mega long off periods unfortunately!

This week I've been managing to run every other day for 15 minutes without stopping. Hoping to increase my minutes, maybe by doing C25K again but from the middle. I'm focusing on duration rather than speed at the moment.

emummy · 06/12/2020 10:14

Welcome @wiltingflower! Well done for persevering, it’s not easy sometimes.
Brisk run this morning, still some icy roads to contend with, was a relief to reach the woods!

Utter slog today, think I have a mild cold as I couldn’t find a happy pace at all. Plus I forgot to unpause my watch after I stopped to check the map 🙈
