New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

Sorry - wrong mileage!

Out with a friend this afternoon for a half, was lovely not running on my own. Road and trails, even the sun came out briefly.

Good mileage @Amaura

Lovely spring run today, heard a woodpecker, saw hares, dippers and a herons. Got slightly lost in the woods and ended up crawling through rhododendrons.

Sounds like a nature-filled run @Doublethecuddles!
Nice long run this morning, drove a few miles away for a route I hadn’t done in ages. It was so nice to get a change of scene.

Just stuck to 5k today as I’m still nursing The Grumbly Foot. It seems to be a bit better though so hoping I can wind the mileage back up a little over the next two weeks or so.

@Doublethecuddles That sounds like my kind of run! I like a bit of recreational getting lost on a run Grin

Really enjoyed my 10km this morning, sun was out, it felt easyish. Whereas the 10 I did on Thursday felt anything but! Weird how it can be so different.

Been doing 10kms for a couple of years now, once or twice a 12km but feel like anything longer would be a real struggle... Should I just really slow down and see how far I can go at a much slower speed to try and up the distance?

35.5km run this week, my most in a week in a long time.

Annoy · 21/03/2021 16:29

Ran my fasted 10k today! I was really surprised as it didn’t feel like a great run as I was testing out running with a bumbag/hip pack.... it was shit By the way! If it was too loose it would bounce about, and if too tight I couldn’t breath through my belly properly!

Glad I tested it out before upping my mileage. I have a rucksack too, so will stick to that as it’s comfortable. Was just hoping the bumbag would be good for shorter runs in the summer.

Anyone else run with a pack?

Annoy · 21/03/2021 16:32

I think that’s the idea @Iamblossom with increasing distance. Ultra runners will walk for a huge chink of their long runs, particularly uphill and on trail.

Well done with your mileage this week, mine was 25km which is my longest. Hoping to up it too!

I like my new decathlon hydration pack, really handy size and fits well. 10k today, pushing the pace a bit above my easy run pace but not too much. Garmin must have liked it because my VO2 max increased (having dropped off over Jan/Feb).

Knees and hamstrings all seem reasonably happy so I am planning to have a go at my first half on Sunday week. Training hasn't at all gone to plan but I think I have enough of a base to try it as long as I take it nice and steadily on the day and in the run up.

What do you put in your rucksacks/fanny packs out of interest? I don't need anything other than my phone and headphones when running but then my furthest distance is 10km. Maybe I would need water if running more like 15km?

Iamblossom · 21/03/2021 19:00

BTW if a dog bit me when I running I would be absolutely furious. And I say this as an owner of two dogs who I run with regularly who I can generally control, but if they did run up to someone I would (and do) immediately call them back and leash them if necessary. I am super vigilant about it as I have one very barky sausage dog and one very boisterous labrador who thinks everyone is there to play with him. I find running with them quite stressful as I have to be on my guard the whole time and have eyes in the back of my head so try and go very early with them to avoid people. If one of them nipped someone omg I would be mortified and would fully expect to be shouted at and threatened with legal action, and I would deserve it.

Today it was just a long sleeved top, some chocolate and my phone. I’m trying to get in to the habit of carrying some stuff as I plan on doing more mountain running this summer and want safety equip.

I’m going to stick to rucksack though

UnaOfStormhold · 21/03/2021 19:38

I take water if I am going more than 10k, and generally a cereal bar too.

emummy · 21/03/2021 20:10

I take an electrolyte drink and food if I’m doing over 8 miles; that seems to be the distance I can get to without anything! Am hoping to do an ultra layer in the year, so I’ll need to practice with some food. I usually have tissues as well and my phone.
I have a waist pack from Innov 8 with 2 bits for drinks and then 2 pouches with bungee cords which can fit a jacket or top if needed.

Well done on upping the mileage @lamblossom. Definitely slow down a bit to do a longer run, walk some sections if you need to. Going slow helps build an aerobic base. It feels counter intuitive but it works. You sound like an excellent dog owner btw! Smile

Can’t remember who asked but I always run with a decathlon 10l race vest. For short runs I just have keys and phone in it but for long runs I take loads of food. I’m practicing upping my cals for an ultra so have a lot of different stuff in there. This long run I tried just using gels. I felt a bit sick so I think they didn’t suit me. Also tried boiled new potatoes today. They were good.

Feeling v pleased with myself (also knackered) as did 40 miles this week. Have never done that before.

For my first few half’s, I just carried a water bottle. Then realised it is actually useful to run with a phone in case you get injured might have learnt the hard way, at least twice.

Never got on with waist items, took me ages but found a vest I love. I now have two, a small one for a bit of water, emergency rain jacket, phone and a gel. Plus a larger one for long days out (mountain day almost destroyed my smaller one).

Even short runs I often use it, keeps me used to the feel, good in this weather to have that extra layer plus women’s clothes come with piss poor pockets (none of my items really take a phone and I go out a lot at night).

6-9 miles I might take some water. Don’t need anything up to a half (unless it’s summer then I need at least 500 ml electrolytes), but if I haven’t eaten well or drunk before hand it’s nice to have something. If doing more than a half, then I will start with a gel and beyond that graduate to a cliff bar. Need to work for ultra style food. Last year I took sandwiches and gherkins outs. Mountain days I also had tailwind, but have only done one day longer than 5 hours, so a lot of learning left to do.

IRun4Me · 22/03/2021 12:15

lamblossom I’m the same and will always call my dog to me or put him on lead. Thankfully he is quite antisocial and was trying to keep out of the way of the other dogs when I got bitten so didn’t get caught up in it.
Did a half with a friend over the weekend. I’d sort of forgotten about it so it crept up on me and I hadn’t properly trained. But we took it steady, had a lovely chat while doing it and just enjoyed ourselves.

Well done, @Annoy, and sorry about your grumbky foot, @Spudlet.

Just over 3.5 miles for me today, no major niggles, so will stick at this distance for a week, then try a 4 miler next week. I've been doing body pump at home, which I hope is helping my knees.

If nothing else, my guns are coming along nicely. Grin

I don’t normally take anything with me for a half but will have a recovery drink afterwards though and make sure I’ve eaten a good meal 2.5-3 hours before hand. Anything over a half I usually take my running vest with water bladder in the back, a phone and my jelly beans.

10 mile tempo this evening. Lovely sunny evening.

What recovery drinks does everyone use? I have just ordered some tailwind recovery (and a few standard mid-run tailwind packs to try) because I know I keep reading I need to get more protein in me post-run.

PaddingtonPaddington · 22/03/2021 21:48

For recovery drinks I use the Active Root ginger sachets/powder. It’s the only thing I actually like the taste of!

Amaura · 22/03/2021 22:36

Does chocolate oatly milk count? 😁

emummy · 23/03/2021 08:58

Sounds good to me @Amaura!
Intervals in the sunshine today ahead of a heavy day at work. Felt good

5k for me today, only very minor complaints raised by The Grumbly Foot. I have noticed though that there is a hole wearing on the inside of the heel of The Grumbly Foot’s trainer, but not on the other one, which leads me to wonder if I’m running a bit lopsidedly to protect The Grumbly Foot, or of running lopsidedly is what caused The Grumbly Foot in the first place? A chicken and egg situation, albeit it smellier (my trainers are renowned for their robust fragrance throughout the winter months 😳).
