New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

Hello, @CalmConfident!

We have a light sprinkling of snow here, which is very pretty. My route had a few tarmac stretches on it though which were lethal (ungritted back roads!) so I walked a fair bit on those. Very slowly and carefully 🙈

A smidge over 10k done through so all good. In my leggings with snowflakes on them, which seemed only right!

Welcome calmconfident
That looks pretty and cold spudlet. Bit of snow and a lot of ice here. Put my trail shoes on even though I only did a little bit of off roading. They were good at gripping on the pavement thankfully. Watched a poor lady do a slow motion slide over in front of me. Luckily she wasn’t hurt.

@Spudlet did you mean to add almost a 100 miles?

Another one enjoying 10km in the snow

I’ll add mileage later when we’re happy with it

I managed to fit a bit of running into a family bike ride - turns out I can just about keep up with our 6 year old on his bike and get a bit of interval work in to boot!

I imagine spudlet meant 703 (which would be adding on just over 10k) bringing us to 707.1 with IRun4me's miles too.

Spudlet · 24/01/2021 17:43

@Amaura Oh drat, no. Maths was never my strongest subject Blush Yes, should have been 703. Sorry everyone!

How fab to see all the snowy runs. I missed out as went out early and it was cold but hadn’t started snowing yet. It was so cold I had gloves and hat on the whole time and I generally find i get a bit hot in a hat. Was super icy.

Sorry slightly off topic but I completed C25K before Christmas and after reading so much about having rest days, I have stuck to only 3 runs per week with at least one day between runs. However, I’m finding it really hard each time and like my body has forgotten what to do. I’m wfh and with homeschooling kids too, I literally don’t move during the day so I am stiff. Last week, I managed two runs back to back and felt great, but I’m really concerned I will injure myself this way as it doesn’t seem to be recommended. Has anyone else felt like this?

WhatILoved · 25/01/2021 05:54

Beautiful snowy pictures- I got out on Sunday before it snowed and the spent day making snowmen with kids.

My weeks' miles total 11. I enjoyed most but find the minus temps difficult! Listened to a audio book instead of music on Sunday for a change. Do others do music or books??

@Rgy3250999 I do yoga or weights on a couple of the days I don't run. I feel the yoga in particular helps stretch everything out. So more like active rest. Also walking I try to do 10k min steps. I'm sure it all depends on your body and what it likes. My knees wouldn't be happy if I ran everyday but it's an old dislocation for me! There are deffo some people who run every day and are fine. I also find that if I do lots of cardio my resting heartbeat goes down to mid 40s which means I get dizzy when getting up from rest. I find this annoying which is another reason I keep my runs to 3 or 4 a week.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 25/01/2021 07:51

Its snowed like f**k here in parts of Cheshire. But it was iced slush last night so its snow on ice. Too slippy for a run...ffs. I hope it melts soon xx

Indoctro · 25/01/2021 08:10

Jumped on for some advice

I have been running 25/30 miles a week for 18 months. I follow the 80/20 method.
I am overweight by 2 stone but I'm tall so it's not that obvious.
Suddenly I'm am sore all the time, my knee , my hip , my lower back - all the same side so I know it's connected

No increase of mileage, no issue with shoes. I run in Altras and changed them out at 350 miles.

I do mostly trails but prob about 30% road

What's happened to me.?? Why am I so stiff and sore all of a sudden

Do you think my weight has finally caught up with me , although as I said 2 stone over weight I don't look massive see photo.

I do have a old hip injury from a horse accident years ago but as I said I've been doing same miles for 18 months now

I don't really stretch much or do strength work very often.

Should of said... help me

Give me your advice

Thanks in advance

WhatILoved · 25/01/2021 08:29

@indoctro I'm not an expert by any means but a pt told me strength training does help prevent injury to muscles and tissue between muscles. I'd build some in once or twice a week as that's quite a lot of miles!

Spudlet · 25/01/2021 09:49

@Indoctro I’m also not a qualified person but I can tell you that if I get injured it’s always when I’ve neglected strength training Blush Can you get to a physio at all? I had a zoom appointment a few weeks ago which was really good, I’ve been doing the exercises she gave me religiously and I feel stronger and less niggly already. I think we’re still allowed in person appointments as well but personally I felt a bit better about doing it online. It wasn’t too expensive either, for the difference it’s made.

I have a feeling it's maybe connected to a weakness. I absolutely hate strength in fact I hate anything but running

Maybe it's time I just bite the bullet or I think my wheels are going to fall off Sad

Spudlet · 25/01/2021 10:12

I don’t much like it either, but I look on it as the means to an end. My physio said to me don’t think of it as a weakness, you’re already stronger than a lot of people with those miles (and I don’t do as much mileage age as you). It’s just an imbalance that can be worked on. I have a dodgy ankle, that’s where my problems come from. Got to build up the muscles around it to support it.

emummy · 25/01/2021 11:30

Hi @Indoctro; if you can speak to a physio that would be great. You could also ask a friend to video you running from behind and running past them? There was a discussion on the women’s running podcast last month about form, and how looking at a video can show any obvious asymmetry in how you run.
I also dislike strength training but make myself do it. I do 3x 15 minutes a week so it doesn’t annoy me so much! Also big fan of foam rolling.

Indoctro · 25/01/2021 15:32

15 minutes sounds more my cup of tea, what sort of stuff do you do
Thanks

emummy · 25/01/2021 16:08

I do a core session one day - planks, side crunches on a ball, glute bridges, clamshells, v sit ups. Another day I do more upper body, with press-ups, different planks, some light weights. Another day I do a mix with squats, lunges, calf raises, some kettle bell exercises.

IRun4Me · 25/01/2021 17:43

rgy3250999 I’ve been running most days for the last few months but I’ve built up to that. I’m relatively active but really notice if I don’t exercise or run and everything feels harder. I think it’s just finding the balance of exercise and rest which works for you.
Indoctro as I’ve got older if I neglect my core I know about it.
Bit of an icy run this evening. It was a definite go do it and get it over with run

A measly 2.2 miles today... ran up to the local tarn with a friend who cracked the ice and went for a swim 🥶

No last night or this morning due to ice. I'm petrified of it after breaking my ankle 7years ago.

It's making me emotional and stressed not being able to get some cardio in. It's my.lifeline at the moment xx

CalmConfident · 26/01/2021 08:39

A slow and steady trot along the gritted roads (I basically follow the buses!) . It was slippy out there
