New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

  • need the loo as in need a wee.
Spudlet · 22/01/2021 14:38

Asda liquid talc from the baby aisle is great for chafing, and very cheap!

emummy · 22/01/2021 14:50

I use Vaseline to prevent chafing, have heard that talc between toes is good. I usually wear Hilly socks by Ronhill and have never, touch wood, had blisters or foot chafing. Make sure your shoes are big enough as your feet will swell a bit on longer runs. Also if you google different lacing patterns you can replace your shoes to help with foot troubles.
I often find myself needing a wee when I start a run, I feel for myself it’s a nervous thing so I just ignore it. Have also had the bum spasm thing, it’s really unpleasant! No clue what it is, and no way to predict it either, sadly.

Thanks both - we have an Asda nearby so I'll look for the liquid talc.

I did wonder if needing a wee was just my mind playing tricks - I worry that I might need a wee while out, ergo I feel like I need a wee? Might have to try some reverse psychology on myself! Won't do any harm to try a few pelvic floor exercises either.

I'll look up the Hilly socks - I find my feet are much more comfy when I wear walking socks but they're a bit warm for running. I had normal cotton socks on today and they were sticking a bit. Once I've done my 10k next week I'm going to treat myself to some new trainers as mine are probably a bit old now.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 22/01/2021 16:25

@dubyalass yes especially of it's cold or I've drank pre-workout I really need a wet before hand.

Today was a tough 10k really didn't enjoy myself on the 5th mile.

Rest day tomorrow as I'm having the covid vaccine shortly xx

A lovely 5 miles on the beach.

I go to the loo twice before I leave the house, I’m sure for me it’s all in the mind!

I always need a wee too (and often go in a bush in the woods 🙈). I think it’s because I drink about 20 mins before my run it’s worked its way Through

IRun4Me · 22/01/2021 18:18

I’m always needing a wee because I’m getting to that age. On shorter runs it is mind over matter and soon wears off. But on longer runs I often pop behind a bush.
Touch wood I’ve never had toe problems or blisters - even marathon training - I think good trainers and good socks really help.
Nice to finally get out today after over a week stuck in. Managed to catch the last of the sunshine. My breathing wasn’t great but I think being indoors has not helped.

I’ve not been out in over a week! Suffering from January blues! I work in a school, which feels full on atm and just need a nap when i get home!

IRun4Me · 22/01/2021 19:10

annoy I know exactly where you are coming from. I work in a school as well, hence having to keep self isolating. It is so hard and full on at the moment isn’t it. I often have to force myself out but it is my sanity - even just half an hour out there with the dog helps me so much. Hang in there.

emummy · 23/01/2021 11:01

Gorgeous run in the sunshine this morning. It’s freezing cold but so beautiful. 6 lovely miles on country roads, really enjoyed it.

Was meant to be sunny here but ended up grey. Very muddy and wet in places. Tried to jump over a puddle but totally misjudged and ended up with a very wet foot. But despite all that it was a lovely run. Totally wore the dog out.

Just dropping on to see if anyone can recommend some super warm running gloves so i don't have to wear 2 or 3 pairs? Don't need to be touch screen.

PaddingtonPaddington · 23/01/2021 16:14

@Stumpedasatree inov8 Extreme thermo mittens, expensive but I find the mittens are much warmer than gloves

50FootWave · 23/01/2021 17:02

I'm anxiously on weather watch here on the south coast. The family want snow, I do not, as I want to run first thing!

What have I become?!

Purpleraindeer · 23/01/2021 17:15

I love a snowy run @50FootWave - I will definitely go out tomorrow and am keeping my fingers crossed it will snow before I go out so I can make tracks Smile

I regularly go for a wee behind a bush on a run Blush I thought everyone did?

Long run today. Made a bit more effort to eat something on it and it made a massive difference - I was feeling a bit tired and both snack stops gave me a massive boost.

50FootWave · 23/01/2021 17:38

@Purpleraindeer do you wear special shoes? I only have my regular trainers, and generally run on the roads as I run eary when it's dark - so it's ice that's the problem!

There is a running track just behind my house in the local park - I reckon I could jump the fence if I had to...

emummy · 23/01/2021 18:36

I love a snowy run too, I usually wear trail shoes for grip.

8 miles and a 14 flattish mudslide trail

Think I’ll need to drop down mileage as my injury is starting to cause problems again

Cut myself short by two miles there

Evening all. I'm still struggling, for time and fitness levels! The cold weather is not helping but it's good to be back moving again. The mega breastfeeding boobs are a new one on me though having been happily small of boob all my life! None of my sports bras are really quite sturdy enough.

Sorry if this is a really dense question, but what are the numbers in bold at the end of some posts?

We're due snow here tomorrow, hope all who want to get out for a run, manage it.

emummy · 24/01/2021 11:35

Hi @RestorationInsanity; the numbers are the miles we’ve run that month for everyone posting. So I did 8 miles today, I’ll add that to the previous number. Hope you manage out for a run soon.
I am absolutely frozen. -6 again today, ran in the forest, tracks mostly clear but some large stretches of ice. Some stretches of snow too which was better as my shoes could get grip. I have lots of little scratches on my ankle from trying to walk in the horse bushes at the side! Beautiful day though.

The snow never arrived (phew) so I had a really lovely run until I hit to beach section....and then had windy sleet for the remainder.

Still, not complaining, I managed 10km and took a whole minute off last week's time.

And now the sun has really come out, so a family walk also beckons...

@RestorationInsanity my boobs never shrank much after bf'ing, but I find wearing two bras (or one sports bra, one pull on crop style) keeps things mostly static...

Hi, joining if that is ok. Starting running again as it is the best thing to de stress me ! Another vote for Hilly socks - got some twin skin ones for Christmas and they are lovely ☺️

Was out in the snow this morning, and wore a pair of trail shoes I have had sitting in the box for over a year. Grippy and really comfy.

Adding all my jan miles so far (47.1)
