London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Can I join you all? Been marathoning for a few years but Im only just getting back into it after having a baby. Still intending to do London, but I'm not going to be up to doing my usual training plan, so would be great to hear what everyone else is doing...

PickleSarnie · 10/12/2017 16:20

Welcome madbee!

Hope everyone's had a fab weekend. I was planning long run today but have got stinking cold and there's been 4 inches of snow. So those plans have been scuppered and I'm currently eating pretzels and drinking gin. Which definitely isn't on my plan. Whoops.

Hopefully this is just a temporary blip and the cold buggers off soon and I'll get back on it .

How has everyone else been?

Ice scuppered me building up the miles arfhhhhhhhh so did a warm up and 12 x 60 sec sprints on the treadmill instead. Gah!

LoudestRoar · 10/12/2017 20:06

Snow and a hang over stopped me today. However, I did go out for a mile, dragging my 5 year old in a sled, so think I can be let off Grin

LoudestRoar · 12/12/2017 07:47

Missing-running mojo. Last seen at the 9 mile mark of my last run....
Don't know if it's the cold weather, or tiredness glares at ds2 but I just can't be arsed. It's so busy, and I'm finding it hard to find the time and energy to do my runs. I need to do 4.5 miles today, and just don't want to. It's cold and icy here, so I don't want to do a buggy run, so will need to treadmill it tonight. Please give me a nudge later.....

Theonlyoneiknow · 12/12/2017 12:47

It is hard isn't it @loudestroar. These icy pavements/roads are really scuppering me building up the miles. I'm reluctant to run outside just now as just recovering from 5 months off due to an injury so am being super cautious

Madbee · 12/12/2017 17:01

It's my DD scuppering my mileage at the moment - she's gone on a bottle strike so can't leave her for more than about 90mins or she goes mad on DH. Makes him feel really bad and puts a spanner in my long runs, the little pest!

I'm hoping to get out with a friend for about 10 at the weekend, don't think I'll get much opportunity the rest of the week either Sad

LoudestRoar · 12/12/2017 21:07

Done it, and got a pb as well!!

Madbee · 12/12/2017 21:29

Woohoo, well done Loudestroar!

LoudestRoar · 15/12/2017 13:33

9 miles in the bag! New route, including one of the biggest hills in our area. I did it 5 minutes faster than last time, so very happy. Think my legs may hate me tomorrow though...

Madbee · 16/12/2017 12:04

You're properly on it there Loudestroar Smile

I managed 10 with my friend this morning, yippee! Enjoyed it too. She stopped me pushing myself too hard so I got to the end feeling reasonably ok which was nice!

LoudestRoar · 19/12/2017 22:08

4.5 miles done. Really didn't want to as it was on the treadmill, but I got it out the way.
Hows everyone else doing, and how are your plans looking over the festive period? I've got 9 miles planed for Christmas Eve, 4.5 on boxing day, and 9 on New Years Eve...

PickleSarnie · 20/12/2017 07:47

Well done loudest - can some of your running mojo rub off on me please?! I have really lost oomph. The last week and a half with it's combination of snow, ice and Christmas parties and ridiculously busy work means that I've barely run at all. Keep trying to convince myself that a small blip is fine but I really need to get arse in gear.

Off to see if I can find some motivation down the side of the sofa......

PickleSarnie have you got time today? If so, get running! I skipped a run, so forced myself last night. I broke it down into stages, so 1.5 miles to start. Then I figured I may as well do 5k. Then I figured it was only 2 more k to complete the distance on my plan.
I expect you to report back later saying you've done it, and your basking in the smuh post run glow

PickleSarnie · 20/12/2017 17:59

FFS, I put my gym stuff on thinking I'd manage a quick half hour on the treadmill at least at lunch. But work is an absolute nightmare. Our nanny is sick so I had to pick the kids up and they've been plonked in front of the telly with freezer tapas aka beige stuff for tea whilst i try (and fail) finishing work off before Christmas. Husband out tonight so can't even go when he gets home. Definitely going to get a run in tomorrow and Friday. And buy a lottery ticket so that work doesn't need to ruin my plans again!!

Oh no PickleSarnie it's so frustrating when life gets in the way of running. Don't panic too much though, from what I've seen, it's ok to start training in January, so see how you go, but start afresh in Jan.

Theonlyoneiknow · 20/12/2017 19:29

9.5 miles done today. First time i have been able to get outside in 2 weeks with all the ice. I am struggling after being injured for 5 months and what was an easy pace before feels hard! Must not get demotivated! Life is crazy busy but need to prioritise these long runs to reset my head too!

LoudestRoar · 20/12/2017 19:55

Well done theonly I'm due 4.5 miles on friday, but will need to do it tomorrow, as I'm out all day. I'm also doing a Hiit class in the morning, so may only do a couple of miles instead of 4.5. Then 8.5 due on Christmas Eve...

PickleSarnie · 21/12/2017 14:59

Made it to the gym at last! 4 miles down. Hopefully if I can keep things ticking over until Jan and really get stuck in then.

Well done @picklesarnie. Good luck with getting a run in tomorrow @theloudestroar! My hamstring feels tight so will be on the foam roller tonight as would like to squeeze a run in tomorrow

LoudestRoar · 24/12/2017 10:08

8.5 miles done! Running next boxing day. Now to relax

Theonlyoneiknow · 24/12/2017 15:31

12.5km done in the fog and rain. Felt like a right slog!! The thought of being marathon ready feels way out of reach just now

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 24/12/2017 18:46

Managed 7.5 miles today and yesterday shaved a minute off today might be the gin and tonic I had with lunch. Merry Christmas everyone

LoudestRoar · 24/12/2017 20:30

Well done everyone!
Theonly the weather would have affected you, so when the weather improves, it will hopefully make it not so bad.
Merry Christmas everyone! I'll be out Boxing Day, so see you then.

MaterMetella · 24/12/2017 21:02

May I join? I have a London marathon charity place (am not sure whether the training or fundraising is more daunting 😕). Currently in bed with flu but am at about 10 miles and will ramp up in NY. 🏃‍♀️
