Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Thanks have downloaded the app - starting tonight! Ab wheel sounds like a torture instrument!

Blackspaniel · 08/10/2017 14:59

Hi all, please can I join you?
I have a ballot place for next year, it's the second time I applied. Weirdly (but happily!) my daughter has also got a place this year so we will be running together. This will be my second marathon, I did one 7 years ago (and said 'never again'), but my daughter's first.

We are due to run the Manchester half marathon next Sunday, so have been training for that.

I am very excited and also getting ready to book our hotel. Got DH and DD (9) coming down too, so weekend away for everyone :)

PickleSarnie · 08/10/2017 17:17

Hi black! That's fab you're running with your daughter. Best of luck with the half next week. I need to sort out a half (Or two) between now and then. The only half I did was at midday in the middle of summer with a gazillion percent humidity. And then the Hill of Doom at mile 11.5. It's fair to say I didn't enjoy it that much. Hoping April is going to be less warm.

Oh Pickle, it really makes a difference, the weather doesn't it! My first and only marathon was Edinburgh, in May and it was 25 degrees, we got sunburnt! Spent all my long training runs in rain, wind and snow, then the actual race day was hot. I am preparing for this again now next time, I'm up north, so just running in London means it will be loads warmer for me. I have done quite a few half marathons, with differing results, so put that unenjoyable one behind you :) my half marathon PB was last year in heavy rain, but a very flat course. I need to find a suitable training plan, beginner level is less mileage than I currently do, but I am not intermediate, and don't want to run 5 times a week either... what are you going to follow?

LoudestRoar · 08/10/2017 17:35

Hi Black!
I don't run at all, so am doing a 6 week 10k plan at the moment, and then I'll be following the 24 week plan on the vlm site

ThursdayLastWeek · 08/10/2017 19:45

Hi Black Smile

I think I’m going to design my own plan based on some intermediate plans I’ve found on Pinterest. I need to include Pilates as my x-training on a certain day and parkrun as a short 'faster' run on sats obviously.

Then fit the miles in around that.

I think both my husband and I will both benefit from it being on the fridge for all to see!

LoudestRoar · 09/10/2017 10:46

My local Primark has these reflective running leggings for £3 down from £8 :-)

Do they have a drawstring waist?

LoudestRoar · 09/10/2017 11:13

No, they're just like normal leggings, but running material...

ThursdayLastWeek · 09/10/2017 11:25

Ah ok, I really like the look of them but a drawstring waist is fairly essential for me Grin

Also there are no more than four street lamps here, so I don’t run in the dark anyway!

TriJo · 09/10/2017 11:29

Maybe get a headtorch? I used to train around a dark park at night when I lived in Dublin and had a good Petzl one for winter evenings.

ThursdayLastWeek · 09/10/2017 11:37

I’ll see how I get on in the depths of winter - I wouldn’t feel very safe running on the lanes in the dark, but if I’m not getting my miles in during the light I might have to adjust my plan!

PickleSarnie · 09/10/2017 11:40

Omg. Those leggings look awesome. Let me know how they are to run in.

I had a nightmare trying to find comfy leggings that stay put. I keep my phone/keys etc in a buddy pouch www.thebuddypouch.co.uk which is fab but puts weight on the waistband. So my favourite leggings that don't budge are the sweaty betty zero gravity leggings. Bloody brilliant. But the price tag makes me weep so usually drop hints and get them as birthday presents.

I'll let you know pickle I'm due a run tomorrow, so will let youknow

PickleSarnie · 09/10/2017 19:07

Oooooh. Zero gravity leggings half price on the sweaty betty sale. (Still 45 quid but they really are brilliant. Wide waist band that clings but doesn't dig in) www.sweatybetty.com/mobile/clothing/bottoms/leggings/blackmetalprint-zero-gravity-run-leggings/

Off to get my gait analysed in a bit - feels like such a luxury!

LoudestRoar · 10/10/2017 10:20

Where are you going thursday? I tried go outdoors and decathlon and they don't do it...

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/10/2017 12:22

A local independent place, it was fascinating!

One brand new pair of Saucony Kinvaras ready to be worn to death this winter. Also they're bigger than I thought!

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/10/2017 13:27

Very comfy indeed, can't wait to try them tomorrow!

LoudestRoar · 10/10/2017 13:44

I went out in my Primark ones today. Nice, but they kept falling down!

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/10/2017 15:02

That’s why I always require a drawstring at the waist Loudest!

PickleSarnie · 10/10/2017 15:32

Oooooh. Those are pretty Thursday!

I had my gait done at the sweatshop years ago and have been buying last season's version if the shoes they recommended ever since. Might go get it done again though. Although sweatshop is now owned by Sports Direct (which is ironic given the sports direct employee conditions have been likened to a sweatshop!) So will try the independent one near me instead.

How's everyone doing? I'm feeling a bit smug as dh is at home today, so have already done my exercises on my plan. I'll be able to go for a buggyless run tomorrow as well. I got my fastest 2k yesterday too. Feeling quite comfortable and happy with how things are going...

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/10/2017 10:50

Well done Smile

I’m going to take my new trainers for a spin shortly, probably just a 3/4 mile to break them in - then longer run tomorrow when DC in school/nursery.

Pilates tomorrow eve, the parkrun is the plan for the rest of this week.

PickleSarnie · 11/10/2017 20:41

How were the shiny need trainers Thursday?

I had such a crappy day. Only managed to get to the gym for half an hour. Would have been longer but I got there and my crappy 20 quid Bluetooth headphones died the second I got onto treadmill. Only had them two weeks. Went home to get normal headphones and ran as fast as I could to Nine Inch Nails (music to match my mood) cranked up full volume.

Anyone got recommendations for decent Bluetooth headphones? Don't mind spending if they're decent.
