London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Welcome hatti and MrsStrauli!

I was supposed to go for long run today but the ground was frozen and I looked like bambi on ice so went to the gym instead.

First time of using my Garmin on the treadmill and it's actually pretty accurate so think will use it for every run - indoor and out just to track my runs.

I had a Garmin forerunner 10. Which is the most basic model. Does the job. But wasn't great at finding satellites in central London wheeled I worked. So now I have the forerunner 235 and I love it. Uploads via Bluetooth to my phone. Has a built in heart rate monitor and, as I've just discovered, also works on the treadmill! Totally recommend it. Not cheap but not as expensive as some

^^where I work not wheeled I work!

The forerunner 235 connects to god and gonads so is super fast

FFS. GPS and Glonass. Not God (its not THAT clever and certainly no gonads) I need to stop trying to multi task and pay attention before I press post

Aw shucks, I was thinking of getting the 235, but if it doesn't connect to God or to gonads, I might be tempted with a suunto or the flashy new fit bit instead Grin

Good luck all you marathoners. I didn't get a london place and can't find motivation for a different marathon but am still following your thread. Especially the info about running watches...

MrsStrauli · 02/12/2017 10:17

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I'm currently reading all the marathon books :), 'carb loading' (I basically always am...haha) and while in Latvia I plan to cross country ski and ice skate (too cold for running I think!).

If you guys are doing long runs this weekend have excellent ones.

Also, I read a lovely book (free on Kindle unlimited) called Yes You Can Go the Distance...very encouraging and some good tips I hadn't seen anywhere else :)

LoudestRoar · 02/12/2017 16:21

I did 9 miles today! I'm exhausted Grin

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 03/12/2017 21:00

Did 16.7 very hilly miles am completely shattered. Only managed two runs this week so felt like I had to go big. Still have no idea how ill carry on for another nearly 10 argh!

LoudestRoar · 04/12/2017 07:43

tantrum amazing job! If it was hilly, you worked a lot harder than if it was flat, which London mostly is. You'll smash it!!

PickleSarnie · 04/12/2017 09:37

Wow. Bloody well done Tantrum ! And well done Loudest. Awesome running.
I'm a bit frustrated at myself because didn't get up early enough for a long run on Sunday. But made sure I got the most out of the hour I had by doing speed intervals or whatever they're called. Tempo runs? Anyhoo, really beginning to notice an improvement. My easy pace is faster than it was before. And my legs seem to be capable of moving quicker. I'll never be giving Mo Farah a run for his money but I'm quite chuffed with myself.

I've just realised that 16 weeks before the big day is January 1st! Probably a good excuse to have an early night on Hogmanay.

That's a great result tantrum!
I did just over 8 miles on Sunday. I'd had a patchy week with work commitments meaning I only did one run during the week and my period started yesterday too.

It was a horrible 8 miles, my calves screamed for the first two miles and I swear I could have power walked quicker at times! But then I switched mentally and realised it's tough training sessions like this that prepare you for the marathon, that it's just as much about training your mind as it is about training your body. So I wanted to quit at 3 miles in but I stuck at it and was really proud of myself

Just need to apply that discipline to food and wine now!

LoudestRoar · 04/12/2017 16:41

Extra brownie points to you farine so much harder when your hearts not in it.
I need help, I really don't know when to run this week! I completed 9 miles on Sunday, my longest distance to date.
Marathon plan for this week is as follows...
Wed-4.5 miles, Sat - 3 miles Sun 4.5 miles.
However, I'm giving blood tomorrow evening. So, do I stick with the original plan, and do 4.5 miles 24 hours after giving blood, or should I fit the 4.5 mile in today (legs currently feel tired from Saturday) or maybe Thursday? Or just skip that run, and start again on Saturday?

farine · 04/12/2017 18:37

I think you should be ok 24 hours after giving blood and that's probably better than doing a hard run the day after the long run?

LoudestRoar · 04/12/2017 19:29

I'm skipping today. I'm going to do it thursday, but may do it as a walk with my son in his buggy.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 05/12/2017 21:58

It might just be me farine but I have no stamina for running when I'm on my period (not that i ever feel perky on a run!)

LoudestRoar · 06/12/2017 14:00

4.5 miles was on the plan, was going to do it as a walk, but a mixture of giving blood and littlest ds up half the night meant I gave up 1.5 miles in.

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/12/2017 16:28

gods and gonads Grin

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/12/2017 16:30

Ran the furthest I have ever run yesterday, 13.75 miles. It was hard, but my recovery time is getting shorter - I was physically very tired and achy yesterday afternoon/evening but a foam roller session and good nights sleep and I feel great today.

Shame about the blisters on my left foot though.

Hope everyone’s ok?

hatty44 · 07/12/2017 18:33

I have finally written my training plan!
Have done a short run, intervals and circuits this week. Long run of an hour tomorrow. Still seem quite a way behind you guys but hopefully should be enough time to build up by april

Theonlyoneiknow · 07/12/2017 18:42

Hi All, can I join in? I'm not doing London but Boston USA (the week before). I did London in 2016 and Manchester in 2017. Have been on the running injury bench for 5 months which has sucked big time so having to start back from the beginning and reassess all my goals. Be good to have support during the winter training!

LoudestRoar · 07/12/2017 20:37

Welcome Theonlyoneiknow Wow Boston, that's amazing! Any tips for newbies?
I did a Hiit class today in a hall. It was 1 that you took you kids to, and just let them wander around. Except 16 month old ds only wanted to be held, so I spent a lot of the time doing lunges while holding him.
Planning on 3 miles tomorrow, which is on the plan for Saturday, but we are out all day. I'm going to really go for it, so I can see how much I've improved.

LoudestRoar · 08/12/2017 12:00

Just back. 5k in 39.49. Bit worried by how hard I found it, seeing as it's the shortest distance I've had to run in a long time. Hoping it was just my brain playing tricks on me. 4.5 miles on Sunday....

Theonlyoneiknow · 08/12/2017 12:21

Don't worry @LoudestRoar - you got out today and went running, that's what matters. You could have taken the easy option and done nothing but you didn't. All minutes on your feet count and increasing your distance in small increments will help to avoid injury.

I was fortunate enough to get a ballot place in London in 2016. There is nothing that can quite prepare you for the vast number of people running, the amazing atmosphere and the personal messages that people are carrying with them as they run. Crossing the finishing line was hugely emotional as it isn't just all about the day but all those hours of training and running that has been put in during the previous months. Definitely get your name printed on your running top!

ThursdayLastWeek · 08/12/2017 12:58

Everyone has shitty runs now and again. Learning to chalk them up to experience has been one of the most frustrating things I’ve done since starting to run. Not as bad as forgetting to unpause the garmin though Grin

LoudestRoar · 08/12/2017 13:31

I've done tgat far too often Thursday
I've downloaded a new app called Relive, it plots your run as a 3d map, which sounds good. Will try it out on Sunday.

hatty44 · 08/12/2017 18:34

I only managed 45 mins run as had a mega busy day but my plan is going to be all over the place over Christmas holidays anyway. I just want to keep going as much as I can to keep fitness up and then in the New Year really begin to rack the miles up
