London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Hi and welcome MaterMetella have you run a marathon before? Hope you feel better soon, horrible to be ill over Christmas

Theonlyoneiknow · 25/12/2017 19:34

@Matermatella I found people very generous when it came to sponsorship for VLM - probably as it is such a mega iconic event. Do you have a minimum you have to raise?

MaterMetella · 26/12/2017 21:48

@loudestroar - never done a marathon before! Eek! I've done several halves and always promise myself immediately thereafter that I definitely won't do a marathon as a half is enough but here I am anyway Confused.

@theonlyoneiknow - yes £3k. Double eek! Encouraged by what you say about VLM and attracting more sponsorship as an iconic event.

Still bed bound with flu and lacking the energy to go up and down stairs so writing the above feels v optimistic indeed.....

Theonlyoneiknow · 26/12/2017 22:01

There is still plenty time @matermatella recover properly before you start training again. I had a ballot place for VLM so didnt have to fundraise but had recently lost a family member to MND and wanted to do something. I managed to raise £2500 although didn't have a set amount I had to reach. You can do it! Set up your Just Giving page and sell yourself you will be fine!! I did a sprint intervals session on the treadmill earlier - bitterly cold and icy here

LoudestRoar · 27/12/2017 08:06

Agree with only rest up till you feel better.
Its my first marathon too, also my first half as I'm going from a non runner to a marathon runner in 6 months-eekkkkk!
I'll be jeffing though (regular run/walk intervals) When you're better, may be worth giving this method a go to ease yourself back into it.
Did anyone else get lots of running goodies for Christmas? Lots of leggings (including my amazing tikiboo ones-see pic attached!) running tops, a funky new water belt, and chaffing cream Grin
Tried new leggings and belt for a 4.5 mile run yesterday. Dh and I are off to the inlaws today by the sea. I'm due another 4.5 Friday, then 8.5 on Sunday, but will swap them around, so we can both run together while we have baby sitters.

I've just completed 11 miles for the first time ever!! Bit scary that even if I run twice that, I'll still have 4 and a bit miles to go, but feeling very sore very proud right now

PickleSarnie · 28/12/2017 17:48

Bloody well done Loudest That's awesome. Totally putting me to shame. I've been crap over Christmas. Feel so sluggish from too much food, sitting and Gin. Actually looking forward to Jan 1st and the start of proper plan following. Although going to try a longish run on Sat and/or Sunday. Those leggings are awesome!

Hope you feel better soon Mater

Well done @loudestroar!!!! I did 11 miles today it was baltic and icy and not very nice at all. My raynards came back in my hands. OUCH

PickleSarnie · 29/12/2017 17:07

Well done theonlyone! The only exercise I got today was walking to sweaty betty to buy yet another pair of zero gravity leggings. 50% off plus another 10% for being on their mailing list or something like that. So £42 in the end for £95 leggings (Although would never buy them at full price!) I luvs them.....

Hope your hands are okay now btw. I've started getting raynauds again after now having it in ages. I literally step outside and my fingers go white and waxy instantly. I have gloves for running with but I always get too hot after a few minutes and have to run with gloves stuffed in pants. Can't find a happy medium!

I love those leggings @picklesarnie might have a cheeky look!

PickleSarnie · 30/12/2017 15:52

We could all wear matching leggings! It could be the running equivalent of the mumsnet scarf! Grin

PickleSarnie the perfect way of spotting each other!

Happy New Year all! 16 weeks starts tomorrow.

My plan obligingly starts with a rest day which is probably for the best considering the number of mojitos I've drunk tonight. Might still try for half an hour on the treadmill tonight though.

Happy New Year! We're doing a marathon this year!
Was supposed to do 4.5 miles yesterday, but dh helpfully pointed out if I waited for today, it will go towards my 75 miles challenge for the month.
I actually only did a 5k, but I did have a mince pie about 20 mins before, so I'll take that.
I started running in 2013, and stopped in 2015. I ran a total of 120 miles in that time. I started again in Oct when I got my place. Since then, I've run 145 miles.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 01/01/2018 18:16

I managed 20.4 miles today. Really wanted to break 20 miles barrier so that I could start believing I could do this marathon malarkey! I'm so sore but glad I did it. Mind you I didn't run at all last week so I needed to get going

LoudestRoar · 01/01/2018 19:10

Wow, that's amazing! How long did that take you? I'm planning 20 on the1st April.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 01/01/2018 20:41

It took 3 hours 37 so definitely not speedy!

Theonlyoneiknow · 01/01/2018 21:11

HNY all! Well done on getting out peeps and kudos to that 20 miler! I managed 11.5 miles today which Im pleased with. Still lingering injury which is very frustrating and to be honest if Boston allowed deferrals I probably would but they dont! Im miles away from my fitness of last year but need to be realistic and not look back but forward!

PickleSarnie · 01/01/2018 21:26

20 miles?!?!??!? Shock ShockShock Wow. Well done. Did you do it by yourself? My running buddy from last year isn't so keen on running anymore so will probably have to do it by myself. And one of my main fears is boring myself!!

OP posts:
LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 01/01/2018 21:44

What injury do you have theonlyone ?
I always run on my own with my iPod pickle if I run with someone else I can't seem to run at a sensible pace and burn out.

Theonlyoneiknow · 01/01/2018 23:03

It is high hanstring tendinopathy @loveagoodtoddlertantrum. Started in early July. Couldnt run/bike/swim until about mid November but its still sore although nowhere near as bad. Had to pull out of Ride London too! Have been offered cordosoid injection but really not keen!! I have to look at Boston as a fun run - the hard point was qualifying so I will enjoy the day rather than chase a time (this will be hard!)

ThursdayLastWeek · 02/01/2018 14:00

Hello everyone! I'm officially back on it after a Christmas break - I'll go back and catch up shortly Smile

As for me I got a camelpak hydration backpack for Xmas and have booked an airbnb for the weekend so I feel much more organized.

LoudestRoar · 02/01/2018 15:04

Where are you staying thursday?
