London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum how are you feeling after your 20 miles?

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 02/01/2018 18:50

I'm surprisingly ok Loudest My lower back hurt last night I think when my legs started to die I used my upper body to force myself onwards but today so far I'm ok. Maybe it'll hit me tomorrow.

ThursdayLastWeek · 03/01/2018 08:18

My lower back takes the strain on long runs too Love - I’m started doing my long runs the day before my pilates class so I can give it a thorough stretch afterwards Smile

I’m staying in the Ladywell area if that means anything to anyone? I was quite keen to get somewhere with a kitchen so I can have the food I want/am used to on the big day. Just looking into trains or planes to go up on the Friday now. Me And Citymapper and going to be great friends.

Theonlyoneiknow · 03/01/2018 12:57

7km lunch run done. Had to use every ounce of motivation I have to get out today, despite it being glorious outside! I also have issues with my lower back.. I go to a weekly Yoga for Runners class which is brilliant and really helps. Forecast is awful for Friday - long run day~!

LoudestRoar · 03/01/2018 14:03

Well done only I did 4.5 miles today, it was very windy! My plan has me running saturday and Sunday this week, a shorter distance Saturday. Think it's a mini taper as from next weekend I'm running 11 miles regularly!

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/01/2018 14:13

Phew windy down here today too!
10k trying out my new weird toe tube (to prevent blisters) and my new camelpak. Both were a success once I got used to the sloshing noise!

PickleSarnie · 06/01/2018 11:19

9 miles done. Gorgeous day for it. Had to really, really drag myself out. Took so long that I was later than plan so had to cut run slightly short.

Listened to The Bugle podcasts. First podcast that's actually held my attention. Anyone got any recommendations for others?

Hope everyone has good running this weekend!

^^dragging myself out took so long. Not my actual running (Although the running was far from speedy) After the first mile though I was so glad i made it out.

I did 3 miles today, and due 6.5 tomorrow. My phone is being sent for repair, somitvwas quite refreshing not to have my app barking at me that I'm running too fast.
Well done pickle I gave dh a lie in this morning, so didn't get out until 10:30. I also came back, and just smelt like ammonia (I promise I hadn't pissed myself!) I've heard of it, but first time it's happened to me.

ThursdayLastWeek · 06/01/2018 12:37

I did a very frosty parkrun this morning. It’s so Hilly I count it as a speed work Grin I ran as hard as the conditions allowed, lung busting but still only came in a little under 30 mins.

Was supposed to run with a friend tomorrow but she’s caked off so I’m planning around 9miles alone tomorrow.

I listen to podcasts Pickle. Ones I like are

The Friday Night Comedy (BBC R4)
Fighting Talk (if you like sport) (BBC R5L)
This American Life
The Documentary (hit and miss)
Confession (BBC R2)

And my audible subscription is getting me through long runs!

Theonlyoneiknow · 06/01/2018 20:41

10 miles yesterday. Was supposed to be 12 but it was torrential rain/hail/sleet/wind and I was soaked to the core and had raynards in my fingers. Was so grim I almost phoned someone to come and get me! My official plan starts on Monday. Have used a running coach again as I am so time poor and it was great last year to know exactly what I had to do when and at what pace. I gave up booze during training so that paid for it (although it wasn't expensive for what you get IMO!)

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/01/2018 14:10

Another 10k for me today.
Had arranged to do approx 9miles with a friend but it didn’t work out and couldn’t face doing that distance around home (it’s much hillier here than where we were going to meet) on my own so I compromised with myself.

And then my husband bought me a Mac Donald’s Grin

LoudestRoar · 07/01/2018 19:30

Well done everyone! 10k here as well, then 11 miles due next weekend. I was going to wuss out after 3 miles, but I bumped into a friend and told her how long I was supposed to go, and she was out on her 7 miler, so I had to do it.

timshortfforthalia · 07/01/2018 19:42

Picklesarnie - re podcasts I love running commentary and serial got me through my long runs last year.

LoudestRoar · 07/01/2018 21:25

I'm listening to Harry Potter at the moment. Are you planning on listening on the marathon? I have the bone conductor headphones, so could still listen to everything going on around me.

PickleSarnie · 08/01/2018 14:09

Thanks for the podcast recommendations. And I might sign up to Audible too - at least take advantage of the free month and see how it goes. I'm thinking that with really engrossing books, it will be a reason to get back out running just so I can find out what happens!

I'm slowly plowing through the 5th book of the Outlander series and, goodness me, it's dragging soooooo slowly (despite the previous 4 books being brilliant). So perhaps I won't choose that!

I'm not sure I'll listen to music/podcast on the actual day. Partly because I'm scared of the battery in my phone running out and then attempting to meet up with my husband at the end without a phone. I'll just have to run really fast so that doesn't happen! (

From what I understand there’s no need for headphones on the day...would miss out on all the atmosphere my friend said.

Theonlyoneiknow · 09/01/2018 08:27

I deffo need music (have bone conducting ones so can also hear external noise) I ran London in 2016 with normal headphones (only wore in one ear though!) the crowds and atmosphere are amazing. Remember to get your name printed on your top

LoudestRoar · 09/01/2018 10:47

Theonlyoneiknow I'm also having 'This is a 5k, right?' printed on my back!

farine · 09/01/2018 18:16

Happy New Year everyone. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and is getting into the rhythm of training now it's new year.

I managed a very slow 13 miles on Sunday, and foolishly rather than taking yesterday as a rest day thought I'd go do some body conditioning classes at the gym. Wow - I'm hurting today!!! That will teach me!

I've just just joined a running club as my new year resolution. I realised I was rubbish at doing intervals on my own, so thought I'd get extra motivation doing it in a group. First session is tonight and I am really nervous in case everyone else is super fit and skinny and fast and there's me the middle aged newbie lumbering at the back....

Managed to put 3lbs on over Christmas so doing dry jan to try and shift that plus the other stone and a bit I want to lose!

farine · 09/01/2018 18:19

Oh forgot to say, I struggle without music or podcasts too.

My go to podcasts are serial, S-town, west wing weekly, kermode and Mayo film review and running commentary.

Also listen to talking books - Harry Potter is always worthwhile, and I also listen to various thrillers, although I find it hard to find ones which aren't all about women in peril and graphic nasty stuff. (Not the best to listen running on your own through the woods!)

LoudestRoar · 10/01/2018 21:53

6.5 miles done today, 11 miles planned for Saturday. Was looking forward to a rest day, but remembered I have a fitness class booked in tomorrow morning.

Does everyone else cross train? I either doing a meta fiit class, or like tomorrow, a legs bum and tums class

hillbilly · 10/01/2018 22:54

Hello can I join in? Long time runner but it's been a bit sporadic the last few years. Only managed a few runs nov and dec but now I'm on a 16 week training plan. 9m last Sunday, 6m interval yesterday and 5m steady today. 3m tomorrow and then 10m on Sunday. I did a marathon 15 years ago Pre kids and never thought I would do another. Training with a long term running buddy who is also running LM although she is a faster runner than me so we may not end up together! Well done to everybody on the amazing training you are doing Smile

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/01/2018 07:42

Morning hillbilly the more the merrier!

Yes Loudest I cross train, I have a weekly Pilates class that is excellent for low impact strength all over, and just plain body mindfulness really. I also try to do one fitness blender workout a week, sometimes HIIT, sometimes strength depending on how I feel or what I feel like doing.

I ran 14.5 miles yesterday, trying out dextrose tablets as my running fuel. The last couple of miles were tough, but it wasn’t that long ago I felt the same way after 8 miles so I guess I’m getting there!

Tailwind is worth a try as fuel if you suffer from GI issues
