Half Marathon thread

Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

I feel like a fraud being on this thread at the moment. I haven't booked another half marathon yet and haven't run since my one on 17th Sept. I'm just not feeling well enough Sad

minesapintofwine · 03/10/2017 07:40

What mammy?!? You so are not a fraud. You ran an amazing hm! I walked about 2 miles of mine so I'm probably a fraud but I don't like to see it that way we are all superheroes! I'm sorry you don't feel well. I'm pretty sure running 13 miles can fuck up your immune system. Just rest rest rest and when you feel well again go back to running. Not a problem for you you hmarathoner you!

If you need cheering up my race pics were released I look like I'm smacking someone in the face Hmm

mammymammyIRL · 03/10/2017 08:28

Ah thanks pint I'm annoyed because I prepaid for 6 bootcamp classes & have only attended one yet, last one thurs morn Hmm if I'll be well enough then either.

No way are you a fraud you're still running & have another one booked!

minesapintofwine · 03/10/2017 09:51

mammy you will get there! It's frustrating definitely but you will definitely get back to it soon.

Cardiff half just sent me a video I need to bleach my eyeballs. I look so fucking awful when I'm running.

LongtimeLurkerNowPokemonHunter · 03/10/2017 10:28

pint I booked Birmingham cause I was working the day of Glasgow. A relative had a Glasgow space and had to work, I got a shift swap so ran as my relative Blush against the rules but glad I did it!

Jeezo my legs still hurt today though. Particularly down stairs!

LongtimeLurkerNowPokemonHunter · 03/10/2017 10:30

Must admit I'm kinda gutted to have lost zero weight over the weekend. I really thought I deserved a loss!

minesapintofwine · 03/10/2017 10:34

long at least it's over with now! My quads are sore I'm spending all morning in a warm bath if I can! My toe blister is rank Envy (not envy)

I've not stepped on the scales after all my carb loading chocolate eating
I'm back on the diet tomorrow

Abra1d · 03/10/2017 10:38

Longtime you may have water retention. Temporary!

HRHPrincessMegan · 03/10/2017 10:42

I'm okay mines - my legs feel good but apart for taking the dog out for walks I've done diddly squat. Oddly enough my shoulder was really sore post HM and into yesterday too. It feels a bit better today so I'm hoping to attend boot camp tomorrow. And maybe I'll try a little run on Thursday. But that's only a maybe in the vaguest terms possible .....

Cut yourself some slack mammy - you need to take care of yourself by taking it easy for a little while. There's no point pushing yourself while unwell, it'll delay your recovery.

minesapintofwine · 03/10/2017 10:56

hrh I'm hoping to run Thursday. I think a short 2 miles jog will loosen up my quads. It's my blister that's causing more problems Hmm not too happy to run with that.

HRHPrincessMegan · 03/10/2017 11:13

I don't think I'd run with a blister - the risk of making it worse and then being off longer.....

Can you do some body weight/strength training instead? It would keep your muscles going but not harm your foot.

minesapintofwine · 03/10/2017 11:42

hrh I know you're right Sad

Purplerunner · 03/10/2017 19:05

I'm still awfully sore, worst I've ever been post HM. Stairs (up or down) are a problem.

Well done long facing the awful Glasgow weather!

Speedy recovery everyone Smile

minesapintofwine · 03/10/2017 19:26

I'm just knackered now. Planning on an extremely early bedtime if dc settle down quickly.

HRHPrincessMegan · 03/10/2017 20:52

I'm knackered too. Training no doubt has a part of it, but I think my diet must have a hand in it too. Honestly, I've become a sugar fiend extraordinaire - my appetite for it is truly monstrous.

Does anyone have any good sugar detox tips? I want to keep training but it's had a shocking impact on my diet - I'm always starving. And making questionable food choices. This was not me prior to taking up running - I used to be a carbophobic, quinoa and kale queen. I need help!

mammymammyIRL · 04/10/2017 05:57

Hrh loading up on protein means I'm not interested in sugary foods plus I'm in Team RH and we record everything in mfp and I don't want to waste calories on empty calorie foods Smile

Had a dream last night where I went to doctor for something else, and she repeatedly said aside from that injury what's wrong with you is your run down Grin

I joined two medal mad challenges last night - one 12k for Christmas to be done in first 12 days of December & the other 500 miles for 2018 Grin

HalleLouja · 05/10/2017 09:18

So after my 10k on Sunday I had a tight ankle / Achilles. All seems ok now but have a massage booked in today just to check it out.

Have also told my PT that I want to work on ankle strength so we are going to be doing that going forwards. She's a PT who trains runners so has lots of different types of torture to put me through. Yes doing lunges with one foot attached to the TRX I am looking at you.

minesapintofwine · 05/10/2017 11:19

hrh I have eaten so much crap! I need to go back on a diet!

mammy you probably are run down. Well done on signing up for challenges though I'm going to sign up for Strava ones.

halle it's horrible having pains etc but sounds like you have a good plan.

I went running this am with a friend. She used to be an excellent runner but has not been for 4 years. She wants to get back into it and I'm hoping she can help me improve too.

We were slow this am as she was 'finding her feet'. I feel like I could have gone faster and further so I know I'm recovering well post hm. I have found some new motivation. I want to improve my 5 and 10 know times and feel comfortable on longer runs than 9 miles.

My toe is healing but looks rank Envy my legs/quads are OK just a bit stiff. I'm having a lot of early nights Hmm

2012860363 · 05/10/2017 11:42

It sounds like everyone is recovering from their halfs well.
It's mine on Sunday and I am so so nervous, I feel sick when I think about it. I am excited too. Just getting over a cold so hoping to be back to full fitness for Sunday.
Hope the weather is ok, showing as dry currently.

minesapintofwine · 05/10/2017 11:54

2012 best of luck! Try very hard not to think about it is my tipSmile

TriGirl007 · 05/10/2017 16:14

Discovered that full street lights do not come back on until after 6.30am this morn! I went out about 6am as woke early and the lights on my road were on so thought I was ok and not helped by my new clip on LED light failing after 10mins!

Anyone got good recommendations for lightweight lights for running to be seen by or to see with? I've got a head torch but I don't fancy trying to get that to stay put when running.

mammymammyIRL · 05/10/2017 21:30

Trigirl no recommendation but eagerly awaiting replies

I went to bootcamp this morning guys, will run mon night don't want to do too much too soon Smile
Currently have a hot water bottle to shoulders - weighted ropes work, and my calves are going to be sore tomo too Grin

minesapintofwine · 05/10/2017 22:02

tri hmm that doesn't sound good. I rarely run in the dark tbh (as I don't have to) but how about sticking the head torch on with duct tape?

mammy well done! That is massive! Star

My knees are twinging ever so slightly. I'm planning on 4 miles tomorrow which will either be ok or fuck them up completely. Either way I'll be icing them this weekend.

Dh is hobbling about after rugby training. Exercise ey? We spend most of our time aching!

HRHPrincessMegan · 06/10/2017 07:11

Diet has marginally improved over the past couple of days in that I've eaten no chocolate (who thought it possible) and only 1 biscuit! mammy when you load up on protein, is it primarily through meat or do you have other recommended sources? I'm not veggie but I don't like to eat too much meat.

I've also managed my first exercise yesterday with a boot camp. I feel fine although I've some shoulder pain. Tomorrow's I'm going to do a park run.

Good luck 2012. Nerves will carry you through.'
