Half Marathon thread

Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

I'm doing a hm on Sunday! Grin

rightsofwomen · 29/09/2017 10:37

Really? You should have said! Grin

minesapintofwine · 29/09/2017 11:10

😂

HRHPrincessMegan · 30/09/2017 08:26

Any final tips from the HM completers?

I know that I should 1) try to enjoy it 2) resist the temptation to start fast.

What else comes to mind?

My friend sent me this Grin www.walesoncraic.com/15-things-need-know-youre-running-cardiff-half-marathon/

HRHPrincessMegan · 30/09/2017 10:24

Useful!

How are you feeling? I'm a little nervous.

minesapintofwine · 30/09/2017 12:14

I'm actually feeling fine but am waiting for nerves to kick in they usually do Smile

It's the not knowing if I'm going to fall over/give up/hate every minute etc that bothers me. I can't wait to get it over now. Hopefully everything will be fine and this time tomorrow we will be relieved and elated!

minesapintofwine · 30/09/2017 14:52

Starting to get a bit nervous now!Shock

Where is everyone else? There's a few running tomorrow!

rightsofwomen · 30/09/2017 15:03

Have you got your kit bag ready for tomorrow? Know where you're parking?
Make sure you keep hydrated. There's a lot that can go wrong in a race, don't make dehydration one of them!

topcat2014 · 30/09/2017 15:05

I am doing Oxford in a week - eeek.

Did Cheltenham last year, but feeling less well prepared this year, probably because I know what's coming!!

minesapintofwine · 30/09/2017 15:16

Well I'm only just drying my kit 😂 but I will have it ready soon. I'm catching train waiting for sil to let me know the time. So I'm semi prepared! I will be ready but today is going fast...

minesapintofwine · 30/09/2017 15:17

topcat good luck!

topcat2014 · 30/09/2017 15:55

@mine - thanks! you too.

minesapintofwine · 30/09/2017 16:13

Ok well I'm going off this thread until after the race now! Thanks to everyone for all the advice and support over the last few months. Good luck to hrh and everyone running tomorrow. See you on the other side Wink

Purplerunner · 30/09/2017 16:25

My nerves have really kicked in today. Weather forecast awful for Glasgow tomorrow. Kids really enjoyed the Super Saturday Junior Run this morning though and luckily we had nice weather for that.

Just keep telling myself, this time tomorrow it will all be over Smile

2012860363 · 30/09/2017 16:31

I am doing Oxford as well @topcat2014 it's my first ever half and I am so so nervous! Just want it to hurry up and be here as so worried about getting ill or injured. Have you run it before?

2012860363 · 30/09/2017 16:32

Good luck @minesapintofwine and to everyone else running tomorrow. Can't wait to read all about it Smile

TriGirl007 · 30/09/2017 19:33

Good luck to all this weekends runners hope the weather is kind!

rightsofwomen · 01/10/2017 07:32

Good luck today's racers!
Enjoy. And come back and tell us some super stories.

HalleLouja · 01/10/2017 08:28

Can I join? Got Amsterdam HM in two weeks. Eeekkk. Running recently going a bit too well and there have been mutterings about a sub 2. But not putting any pressure on myself as something is bound to go wrong.

Good luck to everyone running their races today. Am off to do a 10k race.

2012860363 · 01/10/2017 08:46

@HalleLouja Amersterdam sounds amazing, how exciting. And a potential sub 2 ...... speedy! I can only dream of this (and I do) and am only close to a potential sub 2.15 but it's unlikely if I am honest. Good luck for the 10k

HalleLouja · 01/10/2017 09:22

2012 it's a target and a long way from my PB of 2.09.....

Hoolit · 01/10/2017 09:26

Sorry this thread dropped off my threads in on, I didn't mean to disappear!
Good luck all runners racing today, I'll have to catch up on the thread.

aaahhhBump · 01/10/2017 09:52

Purple me too. I'm on the train just now. Good luck.

HRHPrincessMegan · 01/10/2017 14:59

All done.

Weather held out and the threat of torrential rain didn't materialise. I finished in 2.02:30 which was slightly better than I'd expected. That said, it was harder than I'd expected.

The first 4 miles were fine despite being very hilly. The following 4 miles were also okay but as they were flat I pushed my speed a bit. By mile 8 I started to tire a little but managed to keep the pace. Then at mile 9 the hills resumed and I slowed down. At mile 11 the course flattened but I just couldn't get my legs to go back to my previous pace. Still I kept going and didn't walk which was my main objective.

All in all I'm very pleased. It was my first HM and despite feeling stiff and sore, I suspect it won't be my last.
