I did my first C25K training 'run' last night and it nearly killed me Blush. My knees objected strongly but I ploughed on...sort of.

2nd run tomorrow - how do I survive it?

MrsPatrickDempsey · 03/07/2016 10:37

I use the get running one - don't know if it's Emma or not.

Well I pulled myself together this morning and completed 25 mins! beautiful clear morning here and I think that made a difference as my last two where in wind and rain. Thank you for the encouragement x

Lenazabaglione · 03/07/2016 12:10

Hi all, please can I join you? Am now on my fourth attempt at c25k. Each time I've balked at the 20 minute run on w5r3.... Determined to do it this time. Next run is w4r3 tomorrow, so am psyching myself up for the 20 min one next week.

Quick was it ok? I'm terrified!

MrsPatrickDempsey · 03/07/2016 16:50

Lena just pace yourself and take it really slow. Trying a new route helped when I did my 20 min.

alphabook · 03/07/2016 19:22

Hi all, new to the thread!

Today I completed Week 7 Run 2. I'm currently almost 6 weeks pregnant and managing to keep going so far. I'm determined to complete C25k as I'm so close to finishing! Obviously I'd like to keep running for as long as I can but that's my main goal.

Lena when it came to the 20 minute run I really didn't think I'd be able to do it, but it was actually fine. I slowed my pace right down and thought about my route to make sure I wasn't running uphill for any long periods of time, as that was the hardest.

Lenazabaglione · 03/07/2016 20:58

Thanks MrsPD and Alpha for your encouragement, I'll let you know how I get on.

QuickBringWine · 03/07/2016 21:30

Week 6 run 1 today, oddly I found it harder with the walking breaks after the 20 minutes, but I also went further than i had before!
Lena I never thought I'd be able to do the 29 minutes, but it wasn't as bad as I expected!! Just go really, really slowly!! Also it was pointed out to me (by my mother) that even if I had to stop for a walk break after 10 minutes that was still further than I'd ever run before!! And after that I had to run the whole thing just to prove to her that I could!!

QuickBringWine · 03/07/2016 22:17

Sorry, 20 minutes not 29!! (29 sounds impossible!!)

MrsSimonNeil · 04/07/2016 07:38

Well done to everyone much further ahead than me. I'm going to do wk1 run 3 this morning. I'm looking forward to moving on to week 2 Grin

Lenazabaglione · 04/07/2016 12:26

Ah, thanks Quick. That's a really good point your Mum made. I was half tempted just to skip that run this time, so thanks for telling me it wasn't so bad. I just hit a brick wall and wouldn't even attempt it last time, so I'm going to give it my best shot and tell myself it could be worse, it could be 29 minutes!

anonymousbird · 05/07/2016 13:35

I did Week 4 Day 2 today. 2.9 miles = 4.65 km! Distance wise so nearly there. I am on 5k runner app and it's great, although I paid a couple of quid for it. More than happy to have done so. Much cheaper than a personal trainer!.

I struggled with the NHS one as it told me i needed to download something inside the app to use it offline and I couldn't see how to do it. Didn't find Jo Whiley that motivating either, she's a bit mellow....

Two 3 minute runs, three 5 minute runs so 21 minutes running in total. Quite a long way from the first day of 6 lots of one minute! Don't feel fitter, but suppose I must be.

It's so motivating to hear of how everyone else is doing, but I still cannot PICTURE MYSELF running either 20 minutes straight, or god forbid, the full 5k without stopping. But I am going to give it a bloody good go.

SkyRabbit · 06/07/2016 22:14

Hi, I did week 3 run 1 today . Not too bad - I did it, although I could have merrily choked the app lady during the last 3 mins run "say walk, you bitch, say it!"
Several hours later, I feel like someone has hobbled me. Both knees and my left ankle feel like someone has taken a sledgehammer to them. Any advice??? I also need to learn to breathe while running!

realwoodlogs · 06/07/2016 22:21

Really stupid question (and maybe answered already) but how do you do it without looking like a total knob?

I mean, out there are proper runners and real people. Who can see me and my Wobblies. Won't they just look at me walking for most of it then lolloping for a few seconds and just report the escaped lunatic?

I'm also a teacher in the town where I live. I'm going to end up on Facebook, aren't I? Looking like a lolloping, sweaty, angry, crying, wobbly knob.

Help!

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 06/07/2016 22:27

Well, you have to decide not to care. You have to decide that you're doing it for yourself and that's good enough. Get a decent bra that reduces the wobble and stop thinking about other people!

SkyRabbit · 06/07/2016 22:37

realwood I run/walk/hobble down the side of an estate - up and down the same wee bit, where not many people see. I don't dare go anywhere near the main road where actual people Are yet. I have friends who drive to the next town over to run, so no one sees them!! Don't think it's uncommon.

suze28 · 06/07/2016 22:42

realwoodlogs I'm the same, I'm a teacher in the same town as where I live although my school is 2 miles away.
I'm now on Wk6D2 and have astounded myself at how I'm doing. I'm not quick bit Runkeeper tells me I'm a bit quicker every time. I found the 20 min run very hard and had to walk for 20 seconds as my legs were like lead but I did it.
When will this running lark seem a bit easier? I feel like I'm a complete plodder!

QuickBringWine · 07/07/2016 10:36

Week 6 run 2 done, time to say goodbye to any walking breaks!! It's all running from here on out!
realwoodlogs I've been spotted out by lots of people I know and they've all been really supportive (and completely amazed) that I'm doing this! Don't worry about what anyone else thinks, you're doing better than them just by giving it a go!!
Lena have you tried your 20 minutes yet?? I've got 22 minutes on Friday to look forward to (ha)! Hope it went well!!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/07/2016 10:39

Realwood I think people notice less than you would think.
I saw my dcs' headmistress out running once but all my brain took in was 'headmistress exercising' - I couldn't tell you whether she was fast, slow, lolloping, graceful, red and sweaty or perfectly groomed, etc etc.

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 07/07/2016 10:55

I definitely get extra 'yay well done you' patronising from people I know when they see me as I'm obviously not the athletic c type! It's a bit annoying but I don't mind much and after all they are impressed with me, not mocking.

anonymousbird · 07/07/2016 12:35

Week four complete!

21 minutes running total (3x5min 2x3min), 13 minutes walk. 2.75 miles.

DDog struggling to keep up now! Had to stop during a walk for her to paddle and drink in the river....

AStreetcarNamedBob · 08/07/2016 03:24

I'm on week 6 day 2 which on my app (5k runner) is 10 min run, 3 walk, 10 min run

I've repeated it twice now. I can run it ok but trying to consolidate. The real reason is I'm scared to move on as the next run is 15 mins straight. I'm already knackered after 10 and desperate for my walk so an extra 5 mins seems huge.

Yesterday I found myself day-dreaming on the first ten min run for about 8 of the mins before I resumed my normal obsession with waiting to hear the voice say "walk"

That's what real runners must be like. Just la la la whilst they run. It was a nice glimpse of th future. Never happened before!

SimonNeilshair · 08/07/2016 09:05

Well done everyone! I haven't managed to fit in a run since Monday but I'm hoping to do wk2 run 1 today. I cannot imagine running further than a couple of minutes right now, even though I've done it before.Confused

I really need to get myself some new trainers

QuickBringWine · 08/07/2016 21:05

AStreetcarNamedBob I've just done week 6 day 3 and my app (zenlabs) had me running for 22 minutes!!! It wasn't too bad, I think the breeze certainly helped me!
No more walking breaks for me now, 25 minutes for my next three runs, then two at 28 minutes before trying for 5k! It's really weird to be seeing the end of the programme on the horizon, I need to start thinking about what I do when I'm finished...

OliveOrTwist · 08/07/2016 21:23

Hi all, I'm not doing c25K so sorry to hijack your thread I just wanted to thank you all...

I've been 'running' for about 5 weeks now. I didn't do C25K but perhaps in hindsight I should have. It's too late to start now so I will carry on as I am. I'm continually covering 5k in about 35-40mins but there are a lot of walking breaks. I want to actually be able run the whole distance but I've just not been able to get longer than a 5 min running spell in. Reading your thread really made something 'click' in my head about my pace and how I needed to slow myself down and lo and behold I managed to do 16 mins without stopping (a huge, unthinkable improvement) and I was and still am thrilled. Reading all of your comments made me realise where I was going wrong, gave me confidence and inspired me to do it. When I realised how long id done I was mentally cheering this thread so thank you all so much Flowers

Sorry again to hijack with my long rambly post Smile

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 09/07/2016 06:46

Why don't you do the c25k from week 4/5? It really does help with pacing.

stoptalkingaboutminecraft · 09/07/2016 12:55

Hello everyone, this is my first ever mumsnet post!

Can I join the C25k chat?
I've just completed run 1 week 3 and feeling good. I completed the programme about 3 years ago but have had 2 more babies since and much heavier now: Over 17stBlush!. Combining this with weightwatchers and hoping it can help me lose weight.

Having 3 children now finding it a good excuse to get out of the madness for a break!

I'm using the nhs choices app with Laura as my guide (love her and hate her in equal measure!) Already dreading the jump to 20 mins running in wk 5.

Thanks for the inspiration to go out this morning everyone! 👟🏃
