I did my first C25K training 'run' last night and it nearly killed me Blush. My knees objected strongly but I ploughed on...sort of.

2nd run tomorrow - how do I survive it?

How is everyone getting on? Are the holidaymakers finding time to fit in a run?

I'm still battling on. I felt great on Sunday when I did w6d3 which was 15 run, walk 3, run 5. Felt good after it and really positive. Have just done d1w7, a 20 minute run. I did it! I should be walking on air - I couldn't even contemplate that a couple of months back - but really struggled with a stictch from about 4 mins in so that's taken the shine of it. Why am I getting stitches now and not before? Just the last two runs. Can feel myself getting fitter although was much slower today. My body shape is changing - back fat disappearing and my waist is back! I'm even wearing jeans I haven't worn for two years - had a muffin top (probably two) before but now they fit and although my muffin top ain't fixed yet, it's not noticeable.

Right, tell me to pull myself together!!

dairyfarmerswife · 07/09/2016 17:50

Thanks Pollys and dogsmum I have seem to be speeding up a bit, and have surprised myself by managing w2r1 without too much panting today. Interestingly even doing the first week seems to have speeded up my walking - I walk 10k round the farm once a week and I was definitely quicker this week. I even ran for a few minutes when I was on tarmac!

Pollys well done on the weight loss, I am hoping to get similar results.

Dogsmom · 10/09/2016 22:49

I got back from Cornwall this morning, I only managed to do two runs in the end not 3 because the weather turned really nice and we got up and went straight to the beach on those days, I found it much easier on a treadmill than outdoors too, my pace was much faster and although I was physically sweatier it was because there was no air con not because I ran faster.

I've thought about getting a folding one for home but it could end up being an expensive clothes horse.

Diet wise I went with good intentions but gradually slipped throughout the week, I can feel it too, I'm bloated and sluggish, tomorrow I'm back to eating healthily and back outdoors to run.

PollysPoppy · 11/09/2016 13:34

Well done running on holiday Dogsmum - great effort. Holidays ought to be about fun and food and not worrying about healthy eating! I went over my MFP calories by a whopping 600 cal yesterday and was 300g heavier this morning Blush but am not too bothered and am still eyeing up a glass of wine tonight!

Week 7 done for me!!! I had a great run on Friday - it was my first 20 minute run with no walk. It was blowing a gale and raining on and off and I loved it - think good music helped a lot! Did 22 minutes in the end a bit faster than earlier in the week. Today was 25 minutes and a bit of a struggle but finished it nonetheless at the same pace as Friday so feeling quite happy.

I think I've earned my stars to shop for running gear now! Have a basket full of stuff to try on from running shoes.com. Just need to check some sizes and will order tonight.

Cannot believe I'm about to start week 8!

AuntieStella · 16/09/2016 07:51

I aim to run on Mon/Wed/Fri, but am really wondering if I can skip it with a clear conscience, mainly because of the rain (but also because my ankle is still intermittently achy).

What's anyone else deciding?

PollysPoppy · 16/09/2016 10:23

Yes, of course you can! I was just going to change but it was raining - am going when it lightens off though as its w8d2 for me and a 30 minute run so I ain't missing this one!! If it's too wet, I'll just push a run back a day and get back on track the next week. Rest the ankle!

AuntieStella · 16/09/2016 14:42

Yes, in the end I chose to miss today. I'm slightly worried that if I give myself permission even once not to go, it's the start of a slippery slope.

But as today would have included some literal slippery slopes, I think I can live with myself. And might be able to find time to go out for a walk later instead.

If I find myself making excuses again, please will you all kick me and tell me to get on with it?

I'm continuing to repeat runs from W5, as I haven't quite managed 20mins without walking.

PollysPoppy · 16/09/2016 15:21

AuntieStella - that's exactly how I feel about missing runs being the start of a slippery slope! I'm not a natural runner and usually spend my run counting down until it's finished ... I'm a lazy lump who needs to exercise so I just have to keep pushing myself.

Anyway, W8d2 ..... done!! Phew! 30 minutes running. Not very fast as I only covered 3.5km so no way will the 35 minute run see me running 5k. Once I do the next/last run, then I'll start working on speeding up and running further. Legs ache today!

dairyfarmerswife · 17/09/2016 15:31

Phew! Just back from w3r1. I ran for three whole minutes! Twice! The second time was hard going, up hill and my legs went to jelly when I dropped to walk but am pretty chuffed. I was quite slow, I think, but it's a pretty warm day. I am slightly confused about the best way to breathe though... Through mouth? Nose? In nose out mouth? My throat starts to get a bit dry breathing through my mouth but that's the way that I seem to do it...

Well done Pollys, I am inspired!

AuntieStella · 18/09/2016 09:12

Well done!

I don't usually run on Sundays, but have just been out (to make up for missing Friday). And I managed to do the W5R3 (20 minutes without walking). So very happy here!

Haven't looked at the demands of the next week yet. DH has a bet with DS that I'll manage 3 miles in under 30 mins before Xmas. That still seems impossible.

PollysPoppy · 18/09/2016 16:19

Well done ladies! Dairy, I'd like to know about breathing too - I do a bit of everything just now but think probably mostly in through nose and out through mouth. I hate the dry feeling in my throat.

🎉🎉🎉 I'm done!!!!! Week 8, Day 3, 35 minutes in the bag! 'Only' managed to cover 4.2k in that time but that gave me a split pace of 8.39 or so so better than my last run. My aim now is to speed up enough to get to 5k in that 35 minutes. Hurt my ankle on Friday and really agonised over whether to go today but am glad I did even though said ankle is starting to throb now. Now I need to graduate to running in the road Shock!

fastdaytears · 18/09/2016 18:04

Hi everyone! I've been lurking on your thread with interest! I've been doing the Public Health England app with Jo Wiley's voice! No running before and honestly thought I would die on week one day one!

Just done w5d2 which is 8 running 5 walking 8 running and that was ok but it looks like w5d3 is 20 mins running with no breaks. It seems like a HUGE jump! I'm scared Sad will take it really slowly but that is a big step up right?

fastdaytears · 18/09/2016 18:05

Auntie Stella just seen you're one run ahead of me!

AuntieStella · 23/09/2016 13:09

How are you getting on FastDayTears ?

I've started the W7 runs, and can manage between 22 and 25 minutes without walking now (it's all a bit approximate, as I don't look at my watch and do various loops in the hope of being at the end point in about the right place). I still don't actually like running, but I do feel a bit better for doing it.

PollysPoppy · 27/09/2016 14:36

How's everyone getting on? The thread has gone really quiet! You're flying AuntieStella - well done!

I've done a couple of 35 min runs now and Friday's wasn't as tough as the previous Sunday - life has dared get in the way and I've missed a day here and there. Finally gathered up the courage to 'graduate' from garden to road today so donned my lovely new trainers for the first time and decided to do a shorter, 20 minute run. Wow! The wind pushed me backwards for every step I took forward and I nearly turned home after 3 minutes! Anyway, it was fab - my garden pace is around 8.30min per km but today it dropped to 6.59 and all 3km were within a few seconds of that. Amazing but my goodness, I was puffed at the end! Am going to now use that as a starting point and increase by 5 mins each day to get back up to 35 but hopefully keeping that pace and getting the 5km in 35 mins. Fingers crossed. Oh, and the trainers - blooming heck, what a difference! They're amazing!

Bijouxxx · 27/09/2016 14:57

I've NC but was on this thread at the start...I'm starting again tomorrow Blush

DrPiggle · 27/09/2016 16:00

Newbie checking in.

I did c25k about nine years ago, completed it and went on to run up to 10k. Then two babies and various other things happened and I haven't run in years.

DD1 has now started school, and DD2 is in playschool two mornings a week, so I want to get back into it.

I'll be doing two runs a week, because I go hillwalking most Saturday mornings and I think three batches of exercise is quite enough in a week Smile

The goal is just to improve general health and fitness. I'm hoping to work up to 6k twice a week (four loops of the track in my local park).

Got a pair of shoes fitted on Sunday, so did my first run today. It was okay, I thought my legs would be okay and I'd struggle to breath, but it turned out it was the other way around. My left knee is a bit sore now but hopefully I can sort that with plenty of stretches. Happened the last time too and it eventually went away. Of course, losing another couple of kg would not hurt either, but we're working on that Grin

AuntieStella · 30/09/2016 07:09

I'm meant to be running this morning, but I'm feeling really, really tired and it just seems such a daunting prospect.

I should be aiming to run for about 28 minutes. But am considering doing just one mile and seeing how quickly I can do it.

Bijouxxx · 30/09/2016 07:20

Auntie doing things like that (it has some fancy name according to my running fanatic best friend, time training I think) is good to do once a week when you're training for an event so don't feel bad Wink. I set off on W1D2 this morning after re-starting the programme again on Wednesday but had to turn back after 2 runs, my fancy new running shoes don't seem to agree with me Sad.

AuntieStella · 03/10/2016 09:54

I think I'm going to 'graduate' this week.

Last week (week 8: meant to be 3 runs at 28mins each) turned out to be approx 30mins and 3 miles. So if I can do that again (as that's what it says for week 9) then I've done it!

I'm feeling a kind of disbelief - I never thought I'd be running a whole mile, let alone three of them 3x a week Grin

I'm also thinking about upgrading my trainers (again). And getting at least one more long-sleeved top. The shopping opportunities hadn't occurred to me before....

PollysPoppy · 03/10/2016 16:16

Fantastic AuntieStella - well done! A sense of disbelief ... I still feel like that. And yes, yes, yes to shopping! I finally bought new trainers which happened to come with a ''free' Saucony hoodie and got nice running tights and a short sleeved t but will need a long sleeve t before too long.

I'm struggling with a sore ankle. I sprained in back in the spring and it's achey and sore which is a bummer. Am back to a run every 3/4 days to try and get a balance between resting it and maintaining what fitness I have gained. I did 4km in 25 minutes on Saturday so was really happy with that.

AuntieStella · 07/10/2016 10:03

I've done it!

I hate running, but I feel so good to have achieved this!

(And I bought two long sleeve tops from TKMaxx yesterday)

Btw, PollysPoppy my chronically sore ankle improved enormously with new trainers about 3 weeks ago, so I hope your new pair does the same for you.

PollysPoppy · 07/10/2016 19:01

Whoop whoop .... well done AuntieStella! It's a great feeling, isn't it? Glad your ankle has improved and wish mine would! Haven't been out since lady Saturday but ankle no better so sod that, I'm going for a run tomorrow no matter what! Will try a support on it. And when I do that, I too shall treat myself to a long sleeved running top!

AuntieStella · 09/10/2016 18:01

I found that strapping my ankle up - initially with a horse bandage and later with a proper elasticated support thingy helped.

As did covering if with emulgel (or 'Emu Gel' as we call it).

And the naice version of embrocation (Tisserand ginger sports massage oil) is nice and warming too, and might help (certainly doesn't harm).
