I did my first C25K training 'run' last night and it nearly killed me Blush. My knees objected strongly but I ploughed on...sort of.

2nd run tomorrow - how do I survive it?

I haven't started yet, but can I join in please? I need some serious hand holding!!

Have app, have trainers, have no idea how to run!

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 08/06/2016 18:09

Keep going folks! I'm happily running for 20 minutes now, I haven't pushed to 25 yet but that's more the route I've been doing than lack of stamina but it's honestly so much easier. Just keep at it! One thing I've found is that some runs feel easy, then the next one is harder so it's not a smooth trajectory but it's so much easier than it was.

tropical1 · 09/06/2016 17:01

I've done first run of week two today, I really didn't want to go but I'm doing it with a friend and didn't want to let her down.
The first 90 second run was hard but then got easier, we thought we had to do 8 runs like in week 1.
When the app told us run 6 was the last we were ecstatic!!
I've got blisters on both heels from first run and I don't know how they'll ever go as each time the scabs come off despite huge plasters 😭

AnonymousBird · 10/06/2016 12:46

I have done second run of week one today. I won't be able to run at the weekend, most likely, so third run will be on Monday. Bizarrely quite enjoyed it... bet I won't be saying that when the running times go up!

Good music today which really helped me along but it was quite hot!

QuickBringWine · 10/06/2016 18:59

Finally got back out and did week 2 run 3 tonight!! Super busy this week but so glad I got out there and did it! I find actually making myself go (instead of staying in and drinking wine) the hardest part!
Glad to see everyone else is doing so well too!!

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 11/06/2016 09:35

Complete novice here with some basic questions! Went and bought trainers, leggings, top and an arm thingy to keep my phone in yesterday so no more excuses, and I'm planning on starting today. However there are loads of apps - which one are you all using? I presumed the nhs one would be best but the reviews aren't great - any recommendations gratefully received!

Zame · 11/06/2016 09:45

I found the nhs one really good, it'll definitely get you to 5k! You can play your own music alongside it. I also used zen labs app to get from 5 to 10k but that also starts right from the beginning of training and I think it looks almost identical.
I didn't believe I could ever run 5k in 30 minutes but stuck to the plan, repeated runs I found difficult until I could do them, and got there in the end

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 11/06/2016 10:13

Thanks zame - will start with that one then.

I am really looking forward to starting and dreading it in equal measure! I'm not particularly overweight but so need to tone up, more than anything I want to enjoy it so it becomes part of my routine and not something I have to force myself to do.

Alohamora · 11/06/2016 10:59

I'm still running...and running is still an exaggeration!

My calf muscles are objecting strongly and hurt like hell Sad. Any advice for this overweight, barely able to run novice?

QuickBringWine · 11/06/2016 12:21

I'm using the zen labs app and play my own music alongside it. I'm finding it very easy to use and like that it ticks the runs off for you when you've completed each one, i find it gives me a lovely sense of accomplishment to be able to see how far I've come!
Alohamora - I'm also a complete novice but I find running very slowly helps, I just need to remind myself that I'm in it for the long haul and the speed will come with time!!

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 11/06/2016 13:23

Week 1, day 1 completed. I struggled after the 3rd run but persevered. I don't think it helped that I was so concerned about someone I know seeing me that I drove to another area and the route I chose wasn't particularly flat. I finished about 30 mins ago and heart rate still not normal and I am exhausted.
I'm determined to give it my best shot and reading all the inspiring posts helps.

No advice from me Alohamora but keep going - just imagine the self satisfaction you'll feel at the end of the program.

AStreetcarNamedBob · 11/06/2016 16:36

I did W1D1 yesterday and today my legs are sore and feel like they ran a marathon!! That's ridiculous I probably ran (wobbled) about 6 minutes in total so how am I feeling like this today :D

What sort of stretches warm up are we meant to do? At the beginning and the end? I"m clueless so please share what you all do with regards to that, or is the 5 min walk at the start and end enough?

MrsPatrickDempsey · 11/06/2016 21:22

I don't do any stretches - just the warm up walk and cool down walk. I ran for 4 mins solidly at the end of my wk3 day2 run today (1 min extra) but did nearly have a stroke at the end! How the hell am I going to 5k?

Grumpyoldmomma · 11/06/2016 21:36

I have tried and failed once before but would love to give it another go. I'm massively overweight and the thought of doing this in public makes me feel sick! Plus my huge bazookas are a health hazard ........ both to me and anyone in the close vicinity! Blush

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/06/2016 21:40

Have you got a really good sports bra, Grumpy? Shock Absorber are brilliant - £30 to £40 but worth every penny. A sports bra is as much an essential as good trainers imo.

AStreetcarNamedBob · 11/06/2016 21:48

grumpy - I'm also overweight (obese) but did day 1 yesterday. Nobody pointed and laughed or even looked twice. I was worried too!! I just didn't really come onto anyone's radar they all have better things to look at!

CoreyTaylorsMask · 11/06/2016 21:51

Please can I join you all? Started week 1 this week - not sure my legs will ever recover!

ClaraM · 11/06/2016 21:52

I thought I was doing ok at this, was really beginning to feel fitter, but began to get a lot of pain in the top of one foot. I stopped 2 months ago but still have the pain. Either the C25K has caused arthritis or a colleague thinks I've done a stress fracture to my foot.... I've got good trainers too.... Cycling next I guess for me!

BIWI · 11/06/2016 21:56

It's really important that you have the right shoes. Go to a running shop and have your gait analysed, and then either/or buy the right insoles and the right trainers for you.

Then make sure you do all the right things - warm-up before you start running, run on softer surfaces as much as you can, and then do the stretches when you're finished.

ClaraM · 11/06/2016 22:04

I'm a bit embarrassed to go to a running shop as I'm such a novice but I guess that is the right thing to do. I'm a little overweight, so I suppose I am putting a lot of pressure on my feet? I have been doing the stretches before and after. Previously I got something called 'policeman's heel' which took months to go, so I am wondering if running is perhaps not my thing!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/06/2016 22:19

I went to a running shop and they were really nice. I had never been on a treadmill before but it was fine. I am not overweight but I was rubbish at PE at school and thus generally underconfident about sporty things, but I didn't in the least feel judged or looked down on. I have no doubt they are used to selling trainers to people of all shapes, sizes and levels of ability.

patientzero · 11/06/2016 22:21

Second week 2 run today. Except my podcast kept fucking up so I sacked it off and just ran until I couldn't any more which worked out to be almost a kilometre. Walked a bit. Ran a bit more. Nearly puked and toddled off home for some yoga and a shower Grin

I might see if I can get out again tomorrow afternoon but it's likely to be Tuesday now to finish week 2. I figure 2 runs a week is better than the nothing I was doing before!

QuickBringWine · 12/06/2016 19:11

Week 3 run 1 done (and all by myself again as DS is now losing interest!)
This was the first time I actually felt that I could do it and wasn't checking the countdown till I could stop!! Feeling very achey now though, but surprisingly looking forward to my next run!

AStreetcarNamedBob · 12/06/2016 20:51

W1d2 today and went better than yesterday. Wasn't actually THAT bad... And I had a big endorphin high after feeling like I'd done a marathon or something 😆

AnonymousBird · 13/06/2016 09:44

I have wk 1, day 3 today....
