I did my first C25K training 'run' last night and it nearly killed me Blush. My knees objected strongly but I ploughed on...sort of.

2nd run tomorrow - how do I survive it?

Stella maybe try week 3, then skip ahead a week of you find it easy until you find the one that's a challenge?

PollysPoppy · 26/08/2016 19:31

That's interesting Dogsmum - I thought of you whilst I lumbered around today. My time is getting slower with the longer runs but maybe I shall blame the soft ground .... after all if it means horses gallop at a slower speed, then maybe I can apply the same to myself Grin. I was doing a km in around 8m30s and today it was up to 10m .... gosh I am slow! Tried to run a bit faster for the last five mins and lengthen my stride a bit but I get so knackered and out of breath it's impossible. Sunday is D3 of w5 for me - I think it's 8/5/8 with 3 min walks between - today was 5/8/5 and that was hard enough! Yikes!

Stella, I'd love to be able to run for that long! You're almost there. I guess where you start depends in what app you use as they all seem to be a little different.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 26/08/2016 20:20

I did week 2 run 1, and loved it Grin

I don't get out of breath anywhere near as much as 2 weeks ago, the hardest part is running through the pain of the tendinitis.

Sun started setting as I was running, I'll be sad to lose these light nights.

AuntieStella · 27/08/2016 09:02

Thanks!

I don't feel remotely 'nearly there'. I don't like running, but have done it a bit in the past, and it would be a convenient thing to fit in (I was thinking 3 term time mornings a week, straight after I've booted the DC out).

So I thought posting here, where others might well be beginners or even reluctant beginners or fellow hate-its, might be a good place to keep me at it.

Next challenge I suppose is to get a new sports bra. I have two lovely panache ones in zingy colours from my pre-weight loss days, but not one that fits me now.

PollysPoppy · 27/08/2016 09:44

I'm still holding off buying anything so am running in the 18 yr old trainers and my regular under-wired bra! Don't like the sports bra I bought a few years ago and really must buy one as I don't like running in my good bras!

Dogsmom · 27/08/2016 11:56

Has anyone got proper running trainers and do they make a difference?

I use my Skechers, they're the ones with a big bulky bottom (rather like myself) not the thin soles and although they're super light and comfy I keep reading about how wearing the wrong shoes can cause injuries.

Talking of bulky bottoms have people noticed any weight loss benefits?
I've lost about 5lbs in the 2 weeks but shape wise I can see a big difference, my back fat roll is almost gone and I can do my jeans up easily again, I'm doing the Davina dvd's too on non running days.

Although I did the 5k on Thursday I'm going back to where I was so tonight is w3r1, my friend wants to do it around the streets which makes me nervous, our usual place is the local country park and full of fellow runners/cyclists so I can blend in but I'm already feeling self conscious about running past people's houses.

PollysPoppy · 27/08/2016 19:38

Me too re the back fat Dogsmum - mine is almost gone too and my tummy much flatter but whilst flatter it isn't toned so I'll have to do something about that! I've lost around 3.1kg since I started (so 6 weeks) but have been using MFP to starve myself calorie count. Have had a few days this week where I have over-indulged so actually gained 200g but am not losing sleep over it! Which Davina DVD are you doing? I keep promising myself that I'll start 7 Min Fit a couple of days a week but haven't got round to it. Then I think about the gym but am sure that will remain just a thought!

I'm going to look at proper running shoes next week. At the beginning I told myself that if I was still doing it in six weeks, then I would consider new footwear! Going to the big smoke so will go to a specialist running shop and see what this gait analysis stuff is all about Grin. DH tells me that I'm going to have to move to the road soon and my existing trainers aren't supportive enough .

Enjoy your run tonight - it'll be fine around the streets. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's run - it's 2 8 min runs with a 5 min walk in the middle, then it goes to 10 run, 3 walk, 10 run and builds from there. Scary!!

Dogsmom · 27/08/2016 21:27

It does do a sudden jump doesn't it, one week goes from 8 to 20 minutes, I'm not sure if it's on here I read it but someone said it's more of a mental test because by the time you get there you are capable you just have to believe it.

The Davina dvd's are the 7 minute fit and the 15 minute one, at first I didn't think the 7 minute one was doing anything but I realised I was watching her too much and not really putting the effort in so I now do it as hard as I can.
The 15 minute one is more intense but you can either follow Davina and the guy who do it full on or follow the woman who does it more gently, I do a mix of the two. I like the fact it's broken down into sections for cardio, legs, arms, hips and core so if your legs are knackered after a run you can just do arms and core.

The specialist running shop sounds good, it'll be interesting to see if you notice the difference in shoes specifically for you.

Dogsmom · 28/08/2016 08:45

Forgot to say Polly not sure if you're using map my run too but if not it's really good for tracking your c25k workouts and you can sync it with mfp so it automatically adjusts your calories for the day.

PollysPoppy · 28/08/2016 14:46

I am using it Dogsmum - good thing too as my 6 week old Garmin has stopped logging my intensity minutes and now won't even connect to my phone. Really browned off with that. Love Map My Run - my graphs are mountains though - I guess they should be fairly steady lines through each walk and run?

Did final day of week 5 today. I struggled but finished it. Really don't like running when it's sunny - I feel like I'm going to burn up. Feeling daunted by week 6 which starts with 10 run, 3 walk, 10 run !

porsmork · 29/08/2016 19:29

Fallen off the thread a bit, glad to see everyone doing so well! I've just done wk5 run 2 (8,5,8) and thought it was ok, so looking forward to the next one, tomorrow night.

Going to have to think about a new route soon, though, as it's going to be too dark to go beside the canal soon, and I wouldn't feel safe. Running round the houses on the estate just isn't as appealing though.

Envious of you with weight loss! I think I have dropped a couple of lbs, but not as much as I'd like. my calf muscles have started appearing though!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 30/08/2016 17:58

porsmork with you on the calf muscles, bit scared of mine to be honest, they're looking huge!

I'm not loosing any weight but my leg shape is really changing. I hope when the summer break is over and I stop stuffing my face all day I'll drop pounds quickly.

PollysPoppy · 30/08/2016 23:23

Have lots of Envy of those of you with changing leg shape .... I would love to see calf muscles (skinny legs) but won't hold my breath. Hoping to do w6d1 tomorrow Hmm

PollysPoppy · 31/08/2016 17:13

Whoop whoop .... just did w6d1 which was 10 run, 5 walk, 10 run. Would love to say it was a breeze but it wasn't. Still, job done. The breathing is my main problem - I get so out of breath after, I dunno, 4/5 minutes and struggle from there.

Got gait analysis done the other day. Have a slight over-pronation so do need trainers with some support. The shop only had 4 pairs in my size - didn't like the Nike or Adidas, there were Mizuna (sp) shoes which were nice but the Saucony pair took the prize for comfort. Hated the colour so didn't buy and now am reluctant to rider online in case I get to next week and jack it all in!lack of self belief, I think!! Still, there's a browser window open on my iPad with a couple of pairs chosen to try at home so maybe .....

PollysPoppy · 31/08/2016 17:17

order not rider!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 31/08/2016 18:13

Ooh order them Polly! Where did you get your gait analysed?

porsmork · 31/08/2016 18:22

Completed w5 run 3 yesterday. 20 minutes full running! Very pleased with myself, though I got overtaken by other runners a lot, made me realise how slow I am.
Will be interested to hear about the gait analysis experience. My trainers seem pretty come, but suspect I need more support in my arches. Treat for me if I get to the end of the programme!

Do any of you wear glasses? I do, don't wear them for running as they slip off, but I'm pretty shortsighted, and won't be able to see well in the dark. Hesitant to get contacts in case I sweat. And they get uncomfortable while I'm out.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 31/08/2016 19:07

I keep my glasses on when running porsmork, they're a little loose so I prefer my sunglasses (prescription) which sit still. I'd be awful running without them, my eyesight is terrible.

Have you tried contacts? I've had them before with no issues, dailies are the most comfortable and cheapest if you're just using them occasionally.

PollysPoppy · 31/08/2016 21:39

Fantastic Porsmork - 20 mins running in week 5 would have been the end of me! Are you using the C25K app? I avoided that because of the big jump in running times Blush.

The gait analysis was ..... a tad embarrassing! Firstly, it was a small running shop in city and the other shoppers were 'half'ers' and serious runners. The gait analysis bit .... a minute or two running on the treadmill except ..... I hadn't been on a treadmill for over 20 years so when the bloke started me off at a brisk walk which sped up in a matter of seconds, it took me unawares and I grabbed the bars and swung my legs off! BlushBlush Yep, the ultimate embarrassment! Soooo I did it at a brisk walk which he said was still fine as it still allowed him to record the fall of my feet. It was interesting watching the slow motion replay and the inward bend was pretty noticeable. The difference in my current trainers and what I tried on was amazing - so much lighter and the cushioning was like walking on air. I'll try to finish week 6 and then take the plunge. Am definitely going to need them if I graduate from garden to road - anyway, was spied by neighbour today for first time so have got the embarrassment bit out of the way now!

dairyfarmerswife · 31/08/2016 22:04

Can I join? Just done w1r2 tonight. I tried c25k a couple of years ago but only got about 3 weeks in. I didn't find it too hard but I really took the jogs steady and didn't push myself too hard on the walks either. I think I could push harder but it would be a lot harder going. Does speed matter, or is it better to go slow and be able to cope with it?

I would like to lose a bit of weight, and also get fitter. My job means I am manically busy from Feb to May and I think I would be better prepared if I was fitter.

AuntieStella · 01/09/2016 11:04

Well, I started - on W5R1 done 3x and going well.

But I seem to have buggered my ankle already. I've been wondering if this is a shoes problem as I was in new but general purpose Adidas trainers. Is there really much difference if you get proper running ones? What's holding me back is the sharpness of my 'eek' at the prices when I was looking for new ones for DD.

Dogsmom · 01/09/2016 22:57

Hi dairy
Don't worry about speed it's all about building your fitness and stamina, any speed is better than sitting down, I've found my speed has naturally increased as I got further into it.

polly you should definitely order the trainers, treat yourself, it's a good incentive to keep at it.

Great achievement porsmork, did you ever imagine running 20 minutes when you started?

I'm still really enjoying it and working through it a bit faster than the app suggests, I should be on week 3 which I did have a go at on Tuesday and felt like I wanted to do more so did w4r1 tonight and found it fine.
It's been a week since I did the whole 5k on the spur of the moment and I reckon I could've done it again tonight but was with my friend who doesn't feel ready yet.
It's funny how some days I struggle to do a minute and find every footstep painful and then have days where I breeze through.

We're off to Cornwall tomorrow for a week and I've packed my running gear, we're staying on a Haven site and they have a gym so I'm going to do my runs on a treadmill, it'll be interesting to see if I find it any better or worse than running outdoors.

porsmork · 02/09/2016 15:07

Think I'll sort myself out with contacts, my glasses just slip when I'm sweating! Sunglasses are fine, but don't think I'll rock the look when it gets dark!
Thanks for the support Dogsmum. I'm really chuffed to have done 20 minutes, and starting week6 tonight. I'm really enjoying getting out of the house and having some time to go at my own pace. I have a 20 month old Ds, so I'm either pushing a buggy or walking at a snail's pace when we're out together! Funny how just walking at a normal speed is a treat after having kids!
Enjoy Cornwall. We're off to Devon next week, taking running stuff too.
Pollys, I know what you mean about embarrassment. Though I feel worse when I'm doing the walking sections, as I'm sure people are looking at me and wondering why I'm in running gear for a walk, or that I'm so unfit I had to stop. Wish I had a little couch to 5k badge, or some 'L' plates!

Tricorne · 02/09/2016 17:48

Hey there. Have been lurking for a week or so, just starting out on c25k (tonight will be w2r2 and feeling ok, although one of my knees has felt a bit twingey.

Porksmork On the subject of glasses slipping, have you looked at croakies? They sell them on Amazon. I had some for sunglasses when I went skiing a few years back and now use them if I go out on the bike on a sunny day. They were pretty good.

PollysPoppy · 02/09/2016 18:01

hi Dairy, agree with Dogsmum re the speed. Anything I've read says to go at your own pace. I think it was only a week or 10 days ago I was doing 10 min plus per I'm, today it's 8.46min per km so it does come.

I thought of you porsmork and dogsmum today when I really had to push myself to keep going the last minute of the second 10 minute run. Any tips on how to cope with the leap up to 15 mins on Sunday?

Hope your ankle is okay stella - well done on diving in at week 5!

Am a bit worried about a sore back just now - think it's sciatica as its down left side into leg and hits me every few months when it hurts like heck for a week or so and then disappears as suddenly as it started.. I still ran today and whilst it was okay running, it's pretty twingey now.

Enjoy your holidays ladies.
