I did my first C25K training 'run' last night and it nearly killed me Blush. My knees objected strongly but I ploughed on...sort of.

2nd run tomorrow - how do I survive it?

Just completed Day 1 Week 1. Blooooody hell my thighs hurt but feeling very pleased I ran for 8mins!
Saw lots of other people doing it as well. Here's to the next 7 weeks Shock.

SimonNeilshair · 03/08/2016 11:26

Hi Porsmork and Polly, we're at about the same level. I've just completed week 2 run 3, it feels like I've been at this level for ages but I'm struggling to get out now it's the holidays.

Have you managed to get out yet Porsmork? I got myself a running waterproof jacket from Aldi, so I have no excuse if it rains! Grin

PollysPoppy · 03/08/2016 11:40

Hope you got out porsmork and hi Simon. I did w2d3 on Sunday and struggled. Regardless of whatever rain is chucking it down this evening (and it's pouring just now) I must go out and do d1 of wk 3. It looks a real jump up to 2.5 mins running - eek!

PollysPoppy · 03/08/2016 16:10

Did it! Yay! The ground was so soggy but I squelched my way around. 2.5 minutes not as bad as I had feared. Snails pace though but anything I've read says to go slow. The very fact that it's week 3 now is serving as a real incentive. When are you out again Simon? Friday for me, I hope.

SimonNeilshair · 03/08/2016 18:27

Well done Polly! I bet it was difficult on squelchy ground. I'm hoping to start wk 3 on Friday too, hoping I can cope with the increase in time ok

porsmork · 03/08/2016 19:53

Had a brilliant run yesterday! Skipped wk2r3 and went on to wk3. 3 minutes of running, but something happened and I just found this really natural pace, so I ran for much longer (maybe 5-6 mins) on my way home. I was so slow, but it felt good.

Knees really sore though, hope they recover...

Congrats Simon and Polly! Good to know you guys are at the same stage. Worst part of the run is going past someone jogging while you are in a walking bit. I feel so self conscious and wobbly!

SkyRabbit · 04/08/2016 09:25

Wow to everyone - it all seems really positive Smile

I did week 5 run 1 yesterday ( after repeating week 4 because 5 seemed scary!)
After the 3rd and last 5 minute run, I kept going instead of doing the cool down - I ran for 11 minutes ShockShock Can't quite believe it! It wasn't bad at all !!

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 05/08/2016 11:41

Hello everyone.
Realise I'm a bit late to the party.
Running because I have about three stone to lose, using the zen app and my shiny new Fitbit!
I'm just about to start week 3 of C25k.
It's been a mixed bag for me, the first couple hurt like hell, but it's my breathing I can't seem to keep under control, when will that ever come naturally? Do even expert runners get out of breath?
Also, if anyone has any tips on how to strengthen my core and get rid of my blubber, I'd be very grateful :)

PollysPoppy · 05/08/2016 22:22

Well done guys! Feed, I'd like to know about the breathing too. By the time I get to the walk periods, I'm gasping. D2 of w3 done today. It was exactly the same as w3d1 but took more effort .... my legs hurt and I was muttering to myself not to dare stop. Still, did it! Hope the forecast isn't as bad as predicted for Sunday!

SimonNeilshair · 08/08/2016 20:21

Hi guys, I did week 3, run 1 yesterday and the first 3 minute run was a killer, I was desperate for her to tell me to walk! however, the second 3 minute run felt much easier. I'm tentatively looking forward to doing run 2 tomorrow.

Re breathing, I struggle with this too, I try to make sure I take deep breaths though to get enough oxygen in.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 08/08/2016 20:56

I'm just looking... I'm tempted to start this. I'm putting on weight and nearing a big birthday, I'd like to get my health sorted, so if you don't mind I'll lurk a bit while I look into sports bras and trainers.

houseofpain · 08/08/2016 21:09

Wish I'd found this thread earlier. Am about to start Week 3 and nervous about the jump to 3 mins. Feeling inspired by everyone's progress.

SkyRabbit · 08/08/2016 21:31

house at the beginning I genuinely didn't think I could do the 3 mins - it seemed such an impassible hurdle but really really it's all doable !

I'm at the end of week 5 trying to pluck up the courage for the jump from 8 mins to 20. 6-7 weeks ago, I would NEVER have thought I'd even be at this point!!

Just try it - I bet you'll surprise yourself Smile

TwuntingCat · 08/08/2016 22:21

Moo go for it! One thing I will say though is go and get fitted for proper trainers. I've been following the thread but haven't posted in a while as my foot injury turned out to be a stress fracture from running in unsupportive trainers (they weren't cheap either, they were £68 Nike's but didn't have the correct support). It's been 7 weeks since I last ran and I should have been just about finishing the programme as I was up to W2D2, instead I have to start again at W1D1 which I am going to attempt tomorrow. I now have some proper trainers from Asics which support the ball of my foot properly as that is the part of my foot I land on and where the fracture occurred, however I wouldn't have known about this without having my gait analysed.

PollysPoppy · 09/08/2016 08:49

Ouch Twunting - that sounds sore. Hope the foot holds up today. I'm running in 18 year old Nikes. I don't want to invest in new trainers until I'm sure this isn't going to be too short-lived a phase! I am running on grass though so they're okay - I guess I'm just used to them.

Definitely try it Moo - I'm amazed I'm still here (a very lazy being, I am) but am starting week 4 today.

Go for it House - I was you a few days ago!

Well done Simon. The 3 min runs seem harder but I keep telling myself that if I can do 2 mins I'll be darned if I can't do 3.

Did d3w3 yesterday - 2 mins, 3 mins, 3 mins and 2 mins running. The first run was the hardest, I really nearly walked but pushed on. Today it's d1 of w4 and am quaking at the thought ... 3 min run, 2 walk, 4 run, 3 walk (twice) then finish with 3/2. Eek ..... it seems huge but then I made the mistake of looking forward in week 4 where it steps up to 5 min runs. Aaaargh. Skyrabbit - does your app jump from 8 to 20? that's huge! Good luck!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 09/08/2016 09:15

Twuntingcat that sounds awful, I will definitely get proper fitted trainers. Get well soon!

TwuntingCat · 09/08/2016 18:46

It's not actually as bad as it sounds, I only found out it was fractured a fortnight ago as I went to the doctors as thought it was weird that it was still hurting after 5 weeks rest, I laughed at the doctor when she told me the X-ray showed it was fractured! I've been wearing a support and it's been fine this past week that's why I'm going to attempt to re start W1D1 tomorrow and finally wear my swanky new trainers!

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 09/08/2016 20:52

Twunt I had my fair analysed yesterday and now have a very ugly pair of Brooks Ghost 9s. I'm getting well in to this rubbing lark, and also have got a resistance band and weights to try and tone up and home!
Off to go W3 D2 for the second time today!
Go go go!

chaplin1409 · 09/08/2016 21:35

I tried to do this last year and did complete the race for life last year walking and running but not run since. I would like to start up again but thinking it will be easier once school is back. I was thinking of getting out walking and cycling with the kids to help my fittness ready

porsmork · 09/08/2016 22:05

Sorry to hear about the fracture, ouch!

Did w4 run 1 today. Managed it all fine, except for a stitch, which faded and my knees are so sore! I've ordered some support tape to see if that helps while I strengthen up. Probably need new trainers, but, as some of you have said, I don't want to invest until I'm really into it. It was going to be my treat for getting up to 5k! But maybe need to think about getting them sooner, feel like my feet are getting pushed inwards as I run.

Do you have after run treats you look forward to? Mine is a cool shower and some expensive shower gel that I love, and only use after I've had a jog!

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 09/08/2016 23:25

Mine is an options hot chocolate!
Other times it's water and tea only for me!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 09/08/2016 23:30

Do you run on concrete folks, or are you more off road? (Resuming lurking now, sorry, haven't started to run yet!)

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 10/08/2016 06:05

I run on the road at the moment usually right in the middle because it's flatter. Relatively quiet round where I live and I only go out in the dark so no one can see me jiggaling! Blush

SimonNeilshair · 10/08/2016 10:06

Sorry to hear about your fracture Twunting, I hope your first run goes well.

Jaffa did you do the run twice in one day? Shock

Moo I run either on the pavement or along gravelly farm tracks which can be a bit lumpy and bumpy. It is pretty flat though so I can cope with a few pot holes

I did wk3 run 2 yesterday. I've had to switch programmes though from the 5k run one to the NHS one as my phone is away being repaired at the moment. I suppose they don't differ too much though... I hope to do my final week 3 run tomorrow and then I'll have a few days rest before starting wk 4 Shock

TwuntingCat · 10/08/2016 10:34

First run went surprisingly well, my foot held up fine (new trainers are amazing and definitely worth the small fortune money I spent on them) and I found it much easier than I did the first time round and managed to add an extra 45 seconds running on to my last run. I thought that after 7 weeks rest I would be back to square one in terms of fitness but I think it has maybe had a lasting effect. I have the 5k runner app which staggers the weeks slightly more than the nhs version so I think I might skip to W1R3 on Friday.
Moo I run on pavements and porsmork I'm doing low carb so treat myself to bacon and eggs for breakfast with a dollop of ketchup when I get in along with about 20 gallons of water!
