I did my first C25K training 'run' last night and it nearly killed me Blush. My knees objected strongly but I ploughed on...sort of.

2nd run tomorrow - how do I survive it?

That's great Twunting! Seems like the trainers are worth it. Hmmmm.

I run on pavement, mainly through a quiet industrial estate and then by a canal. Tried to run on grass, but found it too wobbly and uneven. Love the part when I get to the canal, so peaceful!

PollysPoppy · 10/08/2016 19:48

Well done Twunting - glad the foot held up.

Moo, I run around our garden at present. Am lucky that it's large and I can run down into an orchard so it's a lovely, peaceful loop (the downside is that the drainage isn't great in spots so when it rains it gets very soft!). If I ever get up to 20 mins running and beyond I can see me moving onto the road - which is long, straight and boring as heck .... not to mention that it's a country road with far too much traffic going too fast and no pavement.

Hoping to do W4D1 tomorrow and feeling daunted at the prospect.

NuzzleandScratch · 10/08/2016 21:21

Can I join? I'm new to C25K, just started Sunday before last. The first 'run' was really hard, I was counting down that minute of running! I had 3 rest days, and the 2nd run was much better. However, I only had 1 rest day before the 3rd run, which I think was a mistake! The side of my left lower leg was hurting, which I think in hindsight was due to me having been running on the left side of the road. However, since then, my right knee (inner side, slightly below kneecap level) has been hurting. It may be due to me having done more driving over the past few days, but I'm not sure. How can you tell whether the aches & pains are OK to run on, or if you have an injury? I was hoping to start week 2 tomorrow, but not sure if I should. Def need to get better trainers, having read the posts on here.

Also a bit of advice please. I work Mon-Wed, very long hours (out the house 6.30am, home around 8.30pm, and 10.15pm on one of those days), so that really rules out any running on those days. How would you spread the runs on the other days?

I'm so unfit at the moment. I used to be a dancer, dancing a full 6 days a week, but it's a different type of fitness, and that was quite a few years ago now!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 11/08/2016 17:56

I did week 1 cycle 1!!!

Woohoo! I found the running easier than I thought, it was just hard enough to make me think oh bloody hell and not so hard I had to quit.

I have a lingering Achilles tendinitis pain though, hope it's not going to be a problem...!

TwuntingCat · 11/08/2016 18:36

Yay well done moo!! Hope the ankle doesn't turn into too much of a problem though.

PollysPoppy · 11/08/2016 19:48

Hi Nuzzle - hope someone with some experience will come along and advise you re your schedule ... if it was me, I think I'd choose one of the four non-work days as a rest day and then run on the others. How is your leg today?

I managed to do W4D1 today - there were 2x 3 mins and 2x4 min runs and I did I it! Pretty slow but never mind. That's 14 mins running and 2.6km according to Map My Run .... 3 weeks ago I struggled running for 3 mins and .86km. It's a real incentive to keep going!

PollysPoppy · 11/08/2016 19:48

Well done Moo!

NuzzleandScratch · 11/08/2016 20:16

Thanks Polly, I think in the long term, running 3 out of the 4 days might be doable, but maybe not just yet. My leg still isn't great today, so planning to wait until things improve before getting back to it. Very frustrating! Sounds like you're doing well!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 13/08/2016 09:45

Week 1 2nd run done.

That was so hard, I nearly gave up.

Need to lay down for the rest of the day, ha!

Dogsmom · 14/08/2016 20:26

I've just completed week 1 day 1 and feel so pleased and amazed at myself, I've never run in my life and only decided to give it a go this afternoon after chasing my 3 year old round the garden thinking 'this isn't as hard as I thought'.

A friend of mine recently completed it and lost so much weight she's unrecognisable so I'm hoping it'll show on the scales too.

I can't imagine ever running 5k in one go.

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 14/08/2016 21:25

Oh help.
I've come to a standstill.
Not run for four days!!! ShockSadSad
Have eaten nothing but shit food/take outs etc on them too she was just about to start week 4 which I know I will find so difficult so I'm not motivated at all to get out the front door, when I was doing so well before!!

Feckinlego · 14/08/2016 21:47

Hi all, I might join if that's ok? Just done w3r3 this evening. It was the first time I've wanted to give up. I'm considering repeating a few times. It was so hard, I can't imagine running any more than 3 minutes at a time.

I've loved reading all your posts btw you're all doing so well.
Feedmyface I get where you're coming from. Maybe we can motivate each other seeing as we're at the same stage?

PollysPoppy · 14/08/2016 21:48

Great stuff Moo and Dogsmum.

Feed, just draw a line under the last few days and go for it tomorrow or Tuesday. You were able to do it a few days ago, you can do it tomorrow!

Dogsmum - really good to hear about your friend. Stories like that inspire. I'm definitely not a runner and have just completed week 4 today. Between this and calorie counting with My Fitness Pal, I've lost 2.6kg in the past four weeks and although not measuring myself, can see that I've lost weight from my tummy insofar as I can tighten my belt in one hole with no discomfort. It's enough to spur me on every day!

Onto Week 5 on Tuesday for me .... the thought terrifies me. It's 5 run, 2 walk, 6, 2, 5 .... eek! But when I look at the difference between it and today, they're both 16 mins run time just less walking and my first 6 min run. Telling myself all that isn't making me feel any better though!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 14/08/2016 22:29

Well done dogsmum Smile

Feedmyface is it work doing W3R3 again before stepping up to week 4? Just to build your confidence back up?

SimonNeilshair · 15/08/2016 09:45

Jaffa I've just come on to post the same thing, I've had a weekend of completely overindulging at a wedding and now I've lost my momentum. I was doing so well previously.

I really hope I can get a run in today, I'm on wk 3 run 3.

mrsfluffytail · 15/08/2016 10:09

Can I join too? I'm just about to do week 1 day 3 today.

I've signed up to the gym as I'm not quite brave enough to run on the road and find the treadmill helps me pace myself.

Does anyone have any tips to combat stitches and shin splints?

houseofpain · 15/08/2016 11:00

I finally did my first day of week 3 and the first lot of 3mins nearly killed me but I remembered someone posting about the 2nd repetition not being so bad and that helped (and weirdly it was ok). I have to remember to check in on this thread as it has really helped motivate me. Thanks for your encouragement Skyrabbit and Pollys - much appreciated as I haven't got a running buddy to spur me on.

Dogsmom · 15/08/2016 11:22

Do people carry water when they run?

Yesterday was my first one and although I took a bottle of water I left it in the car for when I finished, I could've done with a few swigs throughout though but I'm imagining it's awkward carrying a bottle.

SimonNeilshair · 15/08/2016 12:51

Dogsmom I like to carry water with me, I need to have a few sips after running

MooPointCowsOpinion · 15/08/2016 16:57

I needed my water and didn't have it on my last run, going to carry it this time. Leaving in an hour.

In this heat, will I survive...?

SkyRabbit · 15/08/2016 18:33

Well I just didW6R1, having skipped the scary W5R3 and I was rubbish Sad Really struggled. I don't know if it's because it was so hot, or because it's 5 days since I ran, but I didn't finish the last 5 minutes. Bit disillusioned - have I already peAked ??

MooPointCowsOpinion · 15/08/2016 20:04

Can I ask if you run in quiet areas? I've just had a bit of a scary experience on Week 1 run 3, got followed by an awful man, and I realised how far away from anyone I was if he were to attack me.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 15/08/2016 20:05

Skyrabbit Sorry to leave you unanswered. is it because you skipped a session maybe? Me get be worth going back to week 5 or 4 to get your confidence back up?

SkyRabbit · 15/08/2016 20:19

Moo that sounds scary - where do you run? Is there anywhere more 'populated' you can run? I worry too tbh ,especially when the nights draw in and we'll be running in the dark Confused

Don't think my crap run is cos I missed a run - it was the one that jumps from 8 to 20 mins - I've been avoiding it tbh and repeating the run before it Confused

MooPointCowsOpinion · 15/08/2016 20:30

I found a great run that's in a quiet wood, but a decent path and great views. It was perfect.

I will have to find another, but I don't want to run through a town, or on a busy road. I get too red and sweaty and I'd hate to have to stop for anything like bumping into my mum's friends or something.
