Anyone care to join me in a 30 day walking challenge?

Got an email from My Fitness Plan this morning with a 30 Day Walking Challenge and I'm going to give it a go starting tomorrow. I'm rubbish at links on this iPad but if you google 30 day walking challenge quite a few come up - I'm doing the MFP one.

There are three different levels - I'm starting at the beginning as just getting over problems with my Achilles tendon.

Been feeling very unmotivated and down lately and hoping this will be do-able and get me back into exercise.

Would love some company!

Managed 20 mins to beach and back at sunset. Lovely. Uncounted…….i phone conked out

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/04/2015 21:11

I've only counted 1300 today but reckon I did about 3000 more at lunchtime. Sunset beach walk sounds much nicer though!

I'm being torn between two hobbies and two MN threads on these light evenings, walking versus gardening, at least when I go to the allotment I walk there, but I did gardening at home tonight. I'm also supposed to be studying

How is everyone today?

Gorgeous day here in somerset. I had a choice of a walk or an hour in the sun with a magazine. The magazine won!

But even with not going out for an actual walk I have still clocked up 7,995 steps today. So not feeling too bad!

12000 here, just sitting out enjoying our first bbq of the year.

Cocolepew · 15/04/2015 19:37

Only did my 4000 odd walk but did have a swim before that.
Stupid pedometer still hasn't come Angry

Cocolepew · 15/04/2015 19:37

I have my fire lit! Barbeques?!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/04/2015 19:43

24C on the car thermometer here today (Hampshire). Had a fire lit on Sunday though.

Beautiful, perfect warm spring day here! Walked at an extremely leisurely pace to a local art gallery and had lunch outside (inc a glass of rose) with two friends. Then we walked on a bit more at a very leisurely pace and went to a cafe and had an icecream Grin. Then walked home gently in the sunshine. My pedometer is a cheap old piece of shite which keeps re-setting itself part way through the day, so I didn't wear it today and have no idea how many steps I did.

Had fab day though!

CiderwithBuda · 15/04/2015 23:05

Sounds very lovely Mintyy!

How is everyone doing? Where is everyone?

I'm struggling. My leg/ankle is really painful. Not sure if the walking is helping so I'm giving it a miss for a couple of days. Found some stretches online that I am going to do to see if it helps. Also icing it and massaging ibuprofen gel in.

Sorry to hear that Cider. Hope things improve soon.

I had a very sedentary day yesterday, that's why I didn't post. Housework and essay-writing in the morning, supermarket, more essay writing and coffee with friends in the afternoon and then an evening on the laptop meant a grand total of 2468 steps. Haven't left the house yet today either and no plans as such but the DCs are bickering and we need to go somewhere, this has been a long school holidays.

Cocolepew · 17/04/2015 13:21

I did post yesterday but on the wrong thread ! Blush
Have been very tired the last couple of days . Took the dog out today but walked on the flat and did 4700 steps.
Hope you get better soon cider.

CiderwithBuda · 17/04/2015 14:57

I think I have aggravated it by wearing flip flops. I over pronate and have been wearing fit flop slippers in the house all winter which are supportive. Now it's warmer I switched to flip flops and they have no support. So this morning I ordered three pairs of shoes - well a pair of flip flops but designed for over pronators, and a pair of sandals/slides and a pair of trainers. DH not impressed at £180 bill but laughed when I said they were orthopedic shoes. Hmm. Hoping they help.

I live in Birkinstocks in the summer, I need the support.

NotCitrus · 17/04/2015 19:13

I've had the Accupedo free app on my phone for the last year and it's just been upgraded so it now sends me congratulations messages if I do 10,000 steps in a day. I've never averaged over 8k steps, which is partly because I don't get out much on weekends and walking in the house or playground rarely registers, and mainly because my phone keeps running out of charge. The app does produce lovely graphs though.

Managed it twice this week - if I take dcs to nursery and school and then go to work and then collect them, that's just over 10k steps, and turns out going just to school twice and also hitting 2 supermarkets is 10k as well. It used to not register in Lidl as the aisles were too short!
Only 7k so far today but need to go out later.

I keep injuring myself as soon as I do any other exercise, but thankfully have stayed able to walk much of the time recently (though much of the last year has had about a day a week in bed). Before that I was building up after a damaged Achilles tendon had destroyed my fitness (people kept recommending I do Pilates - which was how I hurt it in the first place...)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/04/2015 19:13

What make are the over-pronator flip-flops? I need arch support too. I bought Croc flip-flops last year, they were extremely comfy but not supportive enough for my bad back. I wear orthotics in boots all winter, Birkenstock type sandals a lot in summer but struggle with actual shoes.

CiderwithBuda · 17/04/2015 21:44

WhoKnows - it's a brand called Vionic - I was googling footwear for Achilles tendonitis and found a website called SimplyFeet. They suggested some Crocs ones too. I've bought a pair of black flip flops for around the house and a pair of pewter sandals and a pair of trainers. I'm off to sydney in two weeks and am planning lots of walking so want to be comfy and hopefully be a bit better by then.

I wear Birkenstocks too in summer but not in the house. I'm now on the hunt for a dressy slightly high shoe.

On the walking front even without a walk today I've received a congratulations email from Fitbit - I've achieved Pengiun March status! Which is 70 lifetime miles apparently. Smile. Wonder if we can get penguin emoticon?

THanks Cider, I'll have a look at those. Off shopping for shoes tomorrow too. How is your leg tonight?

Notcitrus - that's funny about Lidl. How did you damage your Achilles doing Pilates? I too am one of those people who seems to lurch from one injury to the next, but I get a lot out of my weekly Pilates class.

My Fitbit is registering 4500 tonight, but I did go for my power walk this morning without it on, from previous readings I think that will have been an extra 2000 or so, so that's not too bad. Back to term time routines on Monday so will be getting more routine walking in again with school runs etc.

CiderwithBuda · 18/04/2015 23:23

Hi Who Knows - leg not too bad. A lot better in fact. Didn't walk today again but did some gardening and it was achey after that so I stretched it and iced It.

Haven't checked my steps at all today and phone is downstairs so am not checking now! (Am in bed.)

Hoping to go for a walk with a friend tomorrow.

Lovely walk this morning with a friend. In a lovely green space that I didn't know existed right across from DS's school. Might become my regular walk.

Glad your leg is a bit better Cider.
I have bern walking but trying to avoid hills, my lungs are a bit dodgy at the moment and I don't want to make them worse.
I went for a swim on wednesday but think it was too much for me.
Going to walk the dog shortly.

BalloonSlayer · 19/04/2015 17:40

Hello everyone!

Glad you have had some improvement with the ole leg, Cider.

I am coming to the end of my first week with my pedometer.

My total (well it will be more before I go to bed) for the week so far is . . . drumroll . . . 68,254 !! Grin

However, I expected to do more steps today because we went to a theme park! You walk loads at a theme park don't you? OR SO I THOUGHT. . .

I feel like I have done loads of walking and am knackered but my total for today is only 6573 (so far) which is my lowest of the whole week, despite me being at my tiredest. Confused My pedometer doesn't start counting steps till you do ten consecutive ones so I guess it didn't count lots of "queueing steps" as you just do two or three then stop again.

Nevertheless my average for the week is 9750 which is far higher than I thought I would manage. Just a shame I couldn't make it to 70,000 for the week so my average would be 10,000 a day

I haven't lost any weight but I FEEL lighter - I think my legs are stronger so it feels easier to move around. I noticed when I walked up the hill from the shops yesterday I didn't even think about stopping whereas before I always did.

So I am chuffed to bits after my first week. Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for this thread that got me inspired.

Cocolepew · 19/04/2015 17:47

Wow Ballonslayer that's great!
I know what you mean about your legs getting stronger. I was able to walk upstairs without holding onto the bannister for the forst time in 2 years Grin
Im still waiting for my pedometer to come..

CiderwithBuda · 20/04/2015 09:14

Well done BalloonSlayer. Good result.

And Cocolepew - just goes to show that a bit of effort with walking can really pay dividends.
