Anyone care to join me in a 30 day walking challenge?

Got an email from My Fitness Plan this morning with a 30 Day Walking Challenge and I'm going to give it a go starting tomorrow. I'm rubbish at links on this iPad but if you google 30 day walking challenge quite a few come up - I'm doing the MFP one.

There are three different levels - I'm starting at the beginning as just getting over problems with my Achilles tendon.

Been feeling very unmotivated and down lately and hoping this will be do-able and get me back into exercise.

Would love some company!

When do people put their pedometers on? The instant you get out of bed, before having showers/getting dressed and so on? Do they work on a dressing gown belt I wonder ...

crimsonh · 07/04/2015 14:43

I am using pedometer on my phone. So counts steps where I walk with it.

Cocolepew · 07/04/2015 14:53

Is it steps throughout the day or one walk where you count them?

RattieofCatan · 07/04/2015 15:04

Mine goes on my undies if I'm having a slob morning Blush It's on as oon as I'm dressed and stays on until bedtime, be it a day where I'm in my PJs or my normal clothes!

CiderwithBuda · 07/04/2015 16:12

My Fitbit is supposed to be on all the time but I got out of the habit for ages. I'm less interested in the daily figure at the moment than figure I'm aiming for on that particular walk iyswim.

Cocolepew - up to you. Some people are trying to get to 10,000 steps per day however they do it. I'm trying to do one walk - started at 2,500 steps - and will gradually build up. It's up to you. Idea is to just walk every day for 30 days.

Thanks, I think I'll aim for one walk as well.

CiderwithBuda · 07/04/2015 17:27

Day 2 done. Almost didn't go but DS shamed me into it! Did same loop as yesterday so it will have been about 2,500 steps.

I've failed my two first days! Not as free as I'd like to be due to school holidays and absent dh. Will try to catch up tomorrow, but I'll be dragging both dc out on a walk with me.

crimsonh · 07/04/2015 20:50

11500 steps because I went shopping to the next town Grin

tassisssss · 07/04/2015 21:17

Have just hit 10, 000 steps today, yay!

Got a fitbit for mothers day and ADORE it. Totally makes me track how active or not I'm being. My work days tend to be pretty inactive...days at home I can do 15,000 quite easily. And the competitive aspect of challenges with my fitbit friends totally motivates me (in possibly quite an obsessed way, eek!)

marymouse · 07/04/2015 21:21

Can I join in too? I started the couch to 5k a few months ago but had to give up as it was making my back pain unbearable.
I haven't done any exercise since and I'm feeling overweight, unhealthy and bloated.
I can start tomorrow morning, hopefully you will all give me the motivation to keep it going!

CiderwithBuda · 07/04/2015 22:42

Course you can Marymouse. The more the merrier.

Mintyy - it's hard when you are not in normal routine. You will get there.

Impressed at those over 10,000 totals. I've managed that once!

I have a busy day tomorrow and have family coming for a few days. It will either make me walk more or completely mess it all up.

Yesterday was 4447 steps, I managed a 20min walk but had to give up there as the bus caught up with me!

Today I'm staying home most of the day but going to the gym for a walk this evening as I need to work quite far from home this evening and there is a David Lloyd near there so I'll go there to avoid rush hour traffic, killing two birds with one stone Grin

RattieofCatan · 08/04/2015 07:42

tassiss I'm the opposite, my days at home are very inactive whereas on my work days I can clear 8 floors easily and 8,000 steps before 6pm!

If anybody fancies friends on fitbit send me a message, I have two others on there atm and they're both really good!

Cocolepew · 08/04/2015 10:09

Im going into town today so it will involve a lot of walking so Im not sure if I could manage a separate one later.
I'll see how my knees cope Grin

CiderwithBuda · 08/04/2015 11:26

Day 3 walk done. Had to take dogs to Vet so walked there and back with DH.

Might try and get out again later but if not I won't beat myself up. Happy enough that I've done 3,000 steps on the walk to the vet.

Cocolepew · 08/04/2015 16:26

My knees didn't cope. I wandered around for roughly 3 hours so thats me done for today.
I've downloaded a pedometer so I'll measure my walk tomorrow.

CiderwithBuda · 08/04/2015 17:50

3 hours wandering would do my knees in too!

I have passed the 10,000 steps for today already! 10,649 to be precise. Happy. But shattered.

Still have to get sis from airport later.

i'd like to join if i may - i use a Fitbit and average about 9000 steps a day, which is mainly through school runs and walking the DCs to after school activities, I have been a bit horrified at how my step count has slumped since school broke up last week. I am in my last year or so of school runs too, due to the DCs ages, so I need to get walking at other times too.

i have the clip on Fitbit and wear it on my bra, so it is there all the time but hidden and not in the way at all. I have recently discovered that my Iphone has a built in step counter, but I don't always carry my phone, so the Fitbit is better.

So far today I'm on 3734 steps, no school runs and dropped the DCs at holiday club by car on the way to work. DH is out for the evening and DCs are grumpy so not likely to get out and do any more tonight, although I might suggest a walk to the park later.

marymouse · 08/04/2015 21:13

Day 1- got the kids on school holidays so not easy to fit in walking but managed 5400 today.
Will beat it tomorrow, plan on going for a walk once I've got them to bed rather than fitting in small walks with them

Mintyy · 08/04/2015 21:34

Persuaded the two dc (11 and 14) to come out for a walk today. It was pretty bloody lovely actually. We went on as rural a walk as it is possible to have in zone 2 London (although STILL blooming well ran into someone I know) and did some excellent holiday bonding. And I went to parts of my local area that I have never seen before, despite living here for nearly 19 years Blush. We definitely sauntered though and despite being out for nearly 2 hours only did 5.75km. Couldn't find pedometer so not sure about steps.

I seem to be a bit rubbish at doing this thread!

Discounted · 08/04/2015 21:54

I'm quite fit - run c. 30 miles per week! but would love to join, simply because getting out for a walk everyday, during daylight, does wonders for my mental health but despite knowing this, I find it really hard to do.

I run with a group in the evenings which is also great, but 20 mins or so on my own during the day is good for different reasons.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/04/2015 21:56

DS came out with me tonight (DD stayed at home but we were only over the road) - I managed three circuits of the park while he played, so I am now up to approx 7500 steps, much better.

What I am realising is, that it only takes one day of staying at home / work to bring my weekly average plummeting down, those are the days I really want to stop having.

Cocolepew · 09/04/2015 14:55

I did my dog walk and it was 4,793 steps, burning 183 calories Hmm in 41 minutes.
My phone is too big to use as my pedometer all the time so I've ordered one from Amazon to see how many steps I do in a day not a lot Im guessing
My health is a bit up and down and I have only got back to walking the dog after a year so Im quite pleased at the moment.
